OK. I admit it. I posted this in the "business" forum too, but I'M SO STOKED I CAN'T STAND IT. 80,000 circulation, and all my target market gets a copy!! Just hit the stands today. Just had to brag. Sorry. Not really.

Have to ask: were you paid a professional price or did you comp for the exposure?
nice job btw.

From looking at the shots, you have every right to be giddy. Not only are a lot of folks going to see your work, it's work to be proud of. Way to go!

Congratulations!! Can you tell us the camera, lens, etc? I don't even see any signs of flash bounce back...
Nice job!

I was paid reasonably well by the design firm. They received a "non-exclusive, unlimited, non-transferable license" for their own use. They will probably use one of the images in a print ad, and will have all five on their website.
When they were contacted by the magazine, they told the editor to call me. I think I let the magazine off relatively cheaply, given their circulation and advertising rates, but for a "non-exclusive, one-time use, non-transferable license for five images" they still paid me more than the design firm had initially paid me to take the photos.
Sometimes the bear gets you, but every now and again, ya get to take a big bite out of ole bruins butt. Ohh . . . bad image. As far as the "exposure" goes, I don't see my name on that cover. Yeah, my name's on the "contents" page, and very prominently featured in the credits in the article, but I'm going to have to milk that through e-mails and paper mail marketing. I earned that "exposure" and the magazine made money on my work, so I don't work for "exposure." I've done plenty of work before I got that cover. I don't expect to be overwhelmed with business because of it. Wouldn't that be nice though!

Nikon D200. That particular shot was done with a Tokina 12-24. I love that lens for interior work. Actually no flash used in the kitchen on the cover shot. It was not a particularly bright day, so the windows weren't too hard to get right. I did have a flag outside the door on the end to cut down some of the light intensity. The stupid contractor hadn't installed dimmers and the kitchen was like a surgical theater. That's why the recessed lights are so hazy and bright. The exposure was f11 at 1/4 sec ISO200.
What you can't see, cause they cropped it out for the cover, is the view into the dining room through a doorway to the left. I did light that room with gelled flash. So technically there was a flash in the kitchen - just the pop-up that controls the remotes in the Nikon CLS, which I love. I usually set that pop-up for "no exposure." Thanks for asking. If you care to look, the whole set is here (http://portfoliofotos.smugmug.com/gallery/3790259).

Truth be told, I think it's sharper than my Nikon 18-70. Just an impression - no impirical data.

Very cool. Nice shots. Now you've given we Tokina users some nice ammo in our arguments (I'm typically hit with "well, it's not really wide enough vs the Canon 10-22"--bah!). :clap:thumb

I don't know how to hand hold any more:lol4
I think any exposure short of 1/2 second is blindingly fast. Architecture will do that to ya. It's good for old farts like me. I don't move much faster than the building, and the subject doesn't get tired or crawl away while I futz around composing or fiddling.

I have frequently said that the best equipment needed to really sharpen your optical quality is a good tripod that you do use:thumb :D

Hey IceBear,
Who do you market to that gets results? Interior designers? Architects? or anybody else???
Just curious to know what is doing it for you as far as marketing goes....
TIA,

Architects, interior designers, builders. I cheat. My wife has an interior design business in McLean Virginia, and has been in business there for 25 years. We know lots of designers. The rest is primarily referral. Marketing is my downfall. I'm pretty good at the technical crap (he said humbly) but that barely matters. Marketing matters, and I suck. To me, the first job I do for someone is like finding a diamond mine. Once I shoot a project for someone, they're mine for ever. I only know of one designer that ever went to another photographer after I shot one of her jobs. Still don't know why, but I aim to find out. (She went to a damned fine photographer. That's a comfort) The fact is, they love my work, and keep coming back.
I bust my ass for a new client, cause I know there's more diamonds in the mine. Most designers and architects have numerous projects they need photographed, and the main reason they don't do more of it is $$$ and the pain-in-the-ass factor. I try to remove the PITA issue. Show me the money. I schmooze their clients. I am effusively grateful to the homeowner for allowing me to intrude into their home/business, whatever. Why? 'Cause they, in turn, tell MY client, what a great guy I am. I always include a little lagniappe when I deliver, like a set of 4X6's they can give their client, or a couple extra 8x10s that I tell them were "trial prints." That blows them away. "What?? You do trial prints?!?! You really care about getting my stuff right, John (kiss, kiss)." What's it cost me - squat. And they won't THINK about calling someone else when their next project is ready for photography.
Ya gotta beat the bushes. I used to carry around a nice Pina Zagaro brushed aluminum 11x19 portfolio. Now, nobody wants to see prints. They want to see your web site. Thank you SmugMug (though mine is dreck). I've actually had clients tell me not to bother with prints. Just give them the CD. Now, I just carry around a 10" screen notebook computer. The designers all think it's "cute" and at least it gets their attention.

Best advice I can give is to direct you to p.161 in your manual. In your Custom Settings Menu, e3 - Built-in-flash mode
You set it to "Commander" and then in the Commander Mode menu, set the Built-in to "--". You obviously have to have the built-in raised, but it will only fire the command pre-flashes, and not contribute to the exposure.
Pretty cool.
