Camera/Lens recommendation for travel

Hey guys. I'm currently seriously considering selling my 1D Mark II body, possibly the 24-70/2.8L as well. Its an incredible combination, but as I don't do sports photography anymore this setup is a bit "much". In other words, its physically huge. I don't like travelling with it. And in May I'm hitting Hawaii for my honeymoon.

I'm considering a 40D. Much smaller size and weight, still a very capable body, and the sensor cleaning feature is a big selling point to me. Next consideration would be the lens to take. I have the 17-40/4L, which would be easy to travel with. I'm tossing the idea of the 24-105/4L instead, or the 28-135, which I used to own and liked quite a bit.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Throw in a 10-22, and you've got it covered. I've never owned a professional body. However, I did upgrade my well-used 20D to the 40D and I'm thrilled with it. I can't imagine that anybody would be unhappy with this body.

Hi Bill,

The Canon 40D is on my radar as well!

In my mind the ideal travel combination would be:

One of the "super-wide" zooms (10-20mm-ish)
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

That combination, on a crop body, will handle a vast majority of opportunities and subjects. Add a close-up adapter like the Canon 500D for the 70-200mm lens for those smaller subjects.

Have you considered the 5D? Full Frame and about the same size as the 40D. Works great with the L glass. I also have the 24-70, which replaced my 28-135. No comparison. Most of the threads here and elsewhere say the 24-70 & 24-105 are very comparable, the trade off being the extra stop vs extra length and IS.

The 17-40 on a 5D would make a great combo for those Hawaiian sunsets and panos from atop the volcanos & mountains.

If you can only take one, I'd opt for the 24-105. It's a happy compromise and very high quality.
