Just a quick and dirty test. I really can't believe it. All shots taken with Nikkor 85/1.4 at F2. Clean up to iso3200, fairly usable at iso6400 & iso12800...ugly at iso25600. NO processing...just saved as jpg.

I wish I could justify buying one at this point. Im thinking I will just go with the D300 myself. The 12800 looks real good really and, boosting to 25K is insane.

Yep, iso6400 is absolutely usable best I can tell. iso12800 would be fine for small web/small news. I'll know more this week after full shooting tests with Duke basketball. I'll see what I can get away with indoors/lowlight.

There was a high ISO post over in the sports forum at FM. OP said no post
processing to speak of and I've gotta say, those images were great. Hardly
any noise worth mentioning.
This looks like a real winner. The D3 does.

I was hopeful but fairly skeptical for the past 3 months. I placed my order the day it was announced since I figured it'd be at least as good as my D2X and even for just 9fps I wanted the upgrade. As the hi-iso stuff started to creep out there I was still skeptical but more and more hopeful. I'm literally in disbelief and now one of those guys that can say "I can't believe my eyes."
I've been shooting with auto-iso all AM and setting the max at 6400...my office is pretty dark and all the shots are coming in around iso3200-iso5500. They're all fantastic. It's stunning. And so far auto-iso seems much more spot on that previous bodies... :dunno I dialed in f-stop/ss and it hasn't missed an exposure yet with auto-iso.

I dunno, seems like you basically have to relearn how to shoot, what with all that fancy shmancy ISO stuff.
I'm gonna stick with my D70s until something useful comes along...

I have to admit I envy you greatly. About six months ago I worked selling cameras and telling customers that Nikon most likely had a full-frame camera in the works and that we would see in the near future... all I can say is that Nikon did not disappoint.
I do have one question that did not show up in any of the reviews or forum posts that I have seen:
I love my d200 but sometimes I wish that the viewfinder was bigger and brighter like the old manual 35mm cameras... is the D3's viewfinder noticably bigger and brighter or does it still feel like it's digital and dark?

It HUGE! It's so much more noticeable that the D200/D2 line. Simply stunning looking thru the viewfinder...and the rear LCD is ginormous/bright. There's so many reasons to go from a D2X/h to D3 that I can't even begin. Nikon absolutely nailed this one...

When you get a chance to shoot in broad daylight, tell me how well you can see the LCD. When I had last checked the Casio point and shoots were really the only lcd's that you could see good details in bright sunlight(even over the good lcd's of the d40, d80 and Sony's ALPHA).

Will do...it's been very overcast/cloudy the past two days so not a great test. Was perfectly viewable outdoors in those conditions so I've been waiting for direct sun to see how it does.

Did a quick daylight test...while I certainly wouldn't call it true daylight viewable it's better/brighter than my D200/D2X. I can absolutely view it.

As a follow-up, I took some random samples of nothing special from around the house/office. Trying to test auto-iso and hi iso performance. So far flawless. These are all just jpg converts with Hi ISO Noise Reduction set to "Normal" to show that you really have to pixel peep to see noise. Tomorrow will be the real test, i.e. work. :)

Indeed...thanks! :barb
I'll say much of it is the lens as well...I brought the 85/1.4, 70-200/2.8 and 50/1.4 as well as the 200/2. I'm still going thru the images but at 2.8 the 200/2 is remarkable (wide open as well but I've always had better luck at 2.8). It really does shame those other lenses. I dialed it up to 3200 really just as a test as I could've easily come back to 1600 with SS to spare. :lust :lust :lust
