Jeffrey Friedl has been kind enough to develop the MOST requested Lightroom feature on these forums.
You can download it here (http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/lightroom-smugmug/).
LR Version 2 Plugin, here (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/smugmug/) and instructions, here (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/plugin-installation/).

Very cool! ..I might have to give that one a try. ...though I'm wondering about how quick it might be? ..exporting to disk is fast, but having lightroom running just to export and upload to smugmug? ...might be more suited to small galleries?
..I know I know.. I will just give it a try and be happy to have an alternate route. :thumb
Thanks!

How big is the jpg you are trying to upload ?
We can across a similar issue last night.

regardless of how fast it is, uploading/exporting runs as a background task, so you can keep doing other stuff :thumb

are they all failing ? Or just some ?
Cor found that only one of his images was failing.
If you can narrow it down to a particular file or group of files, it may be useful.

It is a group of 6 photos I am trying to export to Smugmug all 6 photos look like they are processing then the error pops up. Of the 6 photos only the first one will upload to Sumgmug.

ok since the first image seems to be working, can you please try uploading the second image by itself.
If that fails, can you please upload that file to SmugMug by some other means and PM me the orignal link, so I can provide that to Jeffrey for testing purposes.

Am I missing something here? Isn't this the same as the export to smugmug add-on which is available in the mac uploader? Or is it performing a different function??

It's nice, but I do miss creating a new gallery, and customize the settings of that gallery from within the application, like you can do with Send to Smugmug or Star*Explorer. Now you just get the option of creating a public or a private gallery, but you can't set a password (my minimum requirement for private galleries). Since you can opt to be taken to the created gallery immediately after upload it's a small step to open the gallery properties, and set it in smugmug, so I don't consider it more than a rough edge.

A number of flickr users are reporting the same issue (http://www.flickr.com/groups/adobe_lightroom/discuss/72157603202918975/), so it appears that it might be a bit deeper rooted that just the export plugin.

David,
I just tried the newer version and still the same error. On Jeffrey's blog I left him the same message I posted here he said to try resizing the images to 600 x 600 pixels. With the new version still the same problem, even with 600 x 600 images.

I think I may have run into a limitation of the plugin.
My email (login ID) for smugmug contains a '.' before the '@domain.com'.
for example, ab.cd@ef.gh (my email is not a .com).
As soon as I type on the first '.', the login box greyed out.
Can this be easily fixed?
Thanks!

The great thing about the LR modules is that they're Lua script. So even if Jeffery Friedl gets too busy to update the SM uploader, someone else can take his work and extend it with new features. Time to start learning a new language. :D

I like this - so far no problems at all.
Would it be possible to allow the categories -subcategories -galleries selection drop-down to be presented in alphabetical order?
Also, instead of having one large list showing all the cateogies - subcategories -galleries it would be nice to have a tiered drop-down menu to make the gallery selection easier.

Are you using the current build 20071127.12? If not you can get it here
http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/lightroom-smugmug/
Once you get this build installed go to the "debug option" and enable HTTP error trapping, that should get rid of that error and you should be able to upload without any issues.

Had the latest build. When I enable error trapping, I get a warning, but the uploads seem to succeed. Oddly the first photo appears quickly on Smugmug, but others seem to take a very long time to appear :dunno.

Call me slow, but I do not see anywhere on the upload screen where to direct the images to go? I uploaded a few images and have no idea where they went. I am also getting the same error as reported. Tried uploading 1 photo and received the error message, tried afaig with 4 images....same error message.
So 1st - where do the images go and 2nd any fixes on the error message being reported?
Plug-in installed here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Michael Kirk\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Modules\smugmug-jfriedl.lrplugin
and just to make sure I did it right, I moved the zipped folder into the Lightroom Modules folder and then unzipped the folder. I have 15 .lua files installed.

Problem is I am getting the error lots of people are reporting - No matter the number of images I select to upload to a SM gallery only the first image will make it into the gallery - the rest do not.
Thoughts or is there a fix for this?
I just installed the Flicker Uploader and it works Perfectly!

Michael: go back and check the gallery. I thought only one photo was loading, and indeed, if you go check the gallery immediately after uploading, you only see one image. For some reason, when using this uploader, the first photo is loaded immediately (it seems), and others take a very long time to appear. Another odd thing about this method is that my galleries don't have the 'rendering image' placeholder: I get nothing, until the photo shows. All other methods of uploading (Drag and drop, S*E), seem to have these placeholder images more often.
Another odd thing is my upload log. If I look at that after an S*E session, I get a list of photos that are in queue. But with this LR plugin, I get nothing. If I refresh the log, complete photos will show up as completed, but nothing shows as in queue.
Be patient and reload your gallery.see if that works for you.

15 minutes after upload and still only the first image is showing up - I tried three different upload attempts and only see the first image of each attempt.

Miss that when reading thru the thread - my bad!
Just like the error fix states - When I upload I get 99% uploaded and usually one random image in the middle of the upload will not make it to SM :dunno
I think for now I'll have to stick with the old drag and drop until this bug get corrected. If I upload images to my gallery, I want to be certain that all images make it there and not all but 1,3,10, etc as I am often sending a 1000+ images for on e event.
Thanks!

When you upload a file does it export it first with the settings applied in lightroom? I have tried a few and it looks like it isnt but i maynot be making enough changes. Also how does the uploader / smugmug handle stacks and copies.

The plug in should export your LR files with all you changes made. Easy way to tell is just edit a file with some extreme changes and export.

It would be great if there was some way of syncronising changes in lightroom to smugmug or at least being able to see what images are uploaded in Lightroom and if they are out of sync by date. I am sure this would be difficult but to be able to work in lightroom and be able to easily know what is on Smugmug and where you uploaded it to would be a killer.

I have a LOT of galleries (mostly archive folders, but, it totals a few hundred galleries altogether). Lightroom exporter shows only the first 50 or so of the galleries, and that's it. It never shows ALL the galleries. I've worked about it be renaming "Archives" as "Zzzzz" to put it at the end of the list, but, still it's a bug IMHO.
Thanks!

Hey guys... i gotta say that this is an awsome plugin. However, i do get one issue that seems to be consistant. Keep in mind, i haven't clicked the "enable http...etc" so i will try that next time.
Here's what happens:
I upload 10 photos from LIghtroom to Smugmug gallery A. I later upload 5 of the same 10 photos to gallery B... what seems to happen is that instead of adding the same photos to gallery B, it seems the photos just get transferred over by themselves... so now i have 5 photos in gallery A and 5 photos in gallery B...instead of 10 in gallery A and and 5 in gallery B :scratch
Not sure if this is a lightroom issue, uploader issue or smugmug issue :dunno
Anyone else having the same problem ?:huh

I just got tihs plugin going. But for some reason it's only exporting the original regardless if i use the 'original' or 'jpeg' dropdown item. How do I get it to export with adjustments I made with the Lightroom develop tools (ie - white balance, crop)? Is this a limitation? I tried searching and didn't find anything.
sunxsweet
Mar-04-2008, 07:36 AM
Well.... the adjustments all seems to be uploading now. But the upload stability seems to be a bit flaky. I tried to upload a handful of images last night and i felt like whether or not they would all load was hit or miss.
Are other people experiencing this? Could it possibly be the All, Refresh, New options that are screwing me up? How does the plugin keep track of what's been loaded before?
Also, what tag is smugmug reading for capture time? I had two photos that were taken with the camera accidentally set for 2007. I adjusted the capture time in lightroom to 2008. But smugmug for some reason is still recognizing it as 2007.

plus it probably doesn't help that after i upload and it takes me to the gallery, it takes quite some time for the images to show up in the gallery. should that delay be expected?

sunxsweet,
I had this problem last night, but I think it's LR, not the plug-in. I upgraded from 1.2 to 1.3.1, and all of the corrections I had made before the upgrade didn't stick. I had to reapply them. Luckily it wasn't much. I haven't checked out older images to see if the problem is endemic or not.

Thanks for replying David. I'm no longer having a problem with the edits.
I did another upload tonight and it seemed to work but the images did take a little time before they showed up in the gallery. This was only four images but it seems unbearable for larger uploads of 10+ images.

I've run into a problem with keywords -- my keywords were all entered in Lightroom, and they are not appearing correctly in SmugMug.
I've tried the following:
Export in LR to disk, then upload to SM. Keywords don't show up at all in SM. If I try to edit the keywords, my LR keywords show up in the edit box (separated by semicolons) but SM doesn't recognize them. Tried both with "export keywords as Lightroom hierarchies" on and off.
Used Jeffrey's Lightroom->SmugMug exporter. Only the parent keyword in the hierarchy showed up in SM. Tried both with "export keywords as Lightroom hierarchies" on and off.
Used Jeffrey's exporter, and had it also save a copy of the file to disk. Then deleted the exported versions from SM, and re-uploaded the ones from disk. Keywords worked correctly. Not a good workflow though.
Any suggestions?
Here's a sample gallery exhibiting the problem:

OK, answered my own question. Save your first export setting/site as a user preset (add), then logout and login to the other site. Do all this within the Lightroom export window. Set up the second site as you like in the export and save it as a new preset. I haven't fully tested going back and forth between but it seems like it should be fine.

I am getting an error message when I am uploading to Smugmug. :dunno
“An internal error has occurred: Win32 API error (unknown error — FormatMessageW failed) when calling HttpSendRequest from private_AgHttpClient_post_L”
After tinkering with Jeffrey's code, I found a small bug which can cause this FormatMessageW error to occur.
The Problem: HTTP is a line-based protocol. However, whatever is being sent as the caption is parsed to encode newline characters (\r or \n) in their HTTP encoding (hex D and A, respectively). Therefore, any caption which has one of these characters will break the semantics of HTTP and cause the query to fail.
Other control characters and special characters (&, =, %, spaces) don't seem to muck with HTTP enough to make my system upset, but it seems logical to replace all those too (as well as the \r and \n which *definitely* cause a problem).
A Solution: Below is a little patch with the fix. I've also put the revised file up on my website until Jeffrey gets a chance to incorporate it into his codebase. By then, everyone should have figured out how I actually broke it :rolleyes (hopefully not, lol).
Patched File: Removed -- the official revision 39 is now available so try it out! :)

EDIT: Merged with the latest revision from Jeffrey (newest code reflects that and I labeled it version "39a" and will leave it up until it gets integrated into revision 40, hopefully).
http://www.dound.com/code/new_caption_screenshot.jpg
Well, because of the overwhelming response from the first minor change, I figured I'd give it another go with something a little more exciting :D.
Overview: I keep information about my photos in a lot of metadata fields -- not just Title or Caption, etc. As a result, for me the plugin was a bit limited in terms of captioning options -- I really wanted to be able to include as many metadata fields as I wanted. This required a little bit different of an approach from the radio buttons / priority method.
Change: You can now specify a "template" using as many metadata fields as you like, as well as other plain formatting (bold/italic takes, newlines, labeling text, etc.). This is facilitated by having a text area to type the template in. It is made easy to use by having buttons for the most common options (e.g. the fields you presented as radio buttons previously plus date/time). The other zillions of metadata fields are lumped into a single combo box with an add button. These buttons should make it easy to compose a template.
Example template: ( Quickly made by pushing buttons:ivar)
$$title ($$dateTime): $$caption
$$jobIdentifier
$$fileName
$$location
Future Work:
-- I need to disable the default button when the user is typing in the box ... otherwise the enter key sends off the export. (Maybe Jeffrey knows how to do this too ... I just posted on the SDK's forum asking about this so hopefully they'll respond since the manual is lacking here).
-- It would be nice if after you clicked a button it would: 1) insert the text at your current cursor position (it always inserts at the end) and 2) refocuses your cursor at the end of the inserted metadata text. This is not really possible with the SDK right now, but Jeffrey is pinging the Adobe people in hopes of getting support added sometime :).
-- A downside is that if a field is missing, it just shown as blank. A user may potentially want to handle special cases ... specially ... but there is no support for that now (other than exporting them separately). That would complicate the UI or at least the syntax, so it probably wouldn't be used much anyway, and regardless I suspect that most people are pretty uniform about what metadata they provide for a given set of photographs.
Below are the changed files and the diff. Thanks again to Jeffrey for a great tool!

Thanks :).
I just modified my previous post to include a screenshot :rofl (too many words!) and to note that I have merged/upgraded the source code to rev39 which Jeffrey released this morning from the first patch.
I also fixed the template box so it now remembers the last template you used (thanks to Jeffrey for helping me out there).
One Last Cool Thing: If you enclose your template in <html> tags, you can use make use of color and all that fun stuff too:
<html>
<b>$$title</b> ($$dateTime)
<font color="red">$$caption</font>
Location: $$location

Weird ... When you bring up the export dialog, in the top-right there are two little arrows. When I click on them, it shows me the smugmug export option in a dropdown box. (I don't have the flickr plugin, but image you're successfully using it in the same way since they are pretty similar). So is it not showing up in that list for you, or is it broken in some other way?
:scratch It'll be interesting to hear how you get this resolved ...
Good luck!

When you get a the "ResultBody is nil" error message, I believe it means that the LrHttp.post method failed to send your data to SmugMug.
LrHttp.post just sends an http post message (I think), so I'm not sure why it would be failing.

Nope, never. Strangely, i find out that if really does upload one photo before it crashes.
dound

Wow, it uploads single photo before crashing?
Is the photo particularly large? I've read on the LR forums that the method sometimes seems to fail on large post requests for some people only. Maybe they've figured out since this post (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=72&catid=664&threadid=1318636&enterthread=y).
Can you try it on a rather small batch of lower-resolution images and see if it makes any difference?

Under the "File Settings" section of the plugin, it should have the output format set to jpeg. But yes, then LR will convert the file to a jpeg before it ever gives the image data to the plugin.
For fun, you could try using the normal LR export to create the jpegs manually and then try to upload those. Supposedly, it shouldn't behave any differently since either way the plugin should be getting the same image data, but it might be worth a try.
You may want to try to leave a comment on Jeffrey's site (http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/lightroom-smugmug/); he may be able to help.

Don, thank so much for taking time to post a comment. I kept working to see if I could discover what was wrong. I got an email from Jeffrey( who lives in Japan) asking a few additional questions as well. He said that error message means I am unable to connect to Smugmug. I do have the internet on the machine and was able to browse and connect to Smugmug, just not with the plugin.
The computer I was using I have used for photography and have not put email/outllook so as to avoid viruses etc. Something in the way the plugin has been written will not allow the plugin to connect from the plugin to smugmug. I did get Jeffrey's plugin to work on my notebook computer which is how I figured out that it has to have something to do with the lack of outlook. I don't know enough to know what kept the program from working but in case anyone else has the same problem, that's what caused the error message. He told me he would let me know after he followed up if there is anything other than outlook that I can add to the machine so that I can use Jeffrey's plugin from lightroom to smugmug. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again for your help!

Are you sure that you have version 20080523.42 *installed*? Check our wiki screenshot (http://wiki.smugmug.com/download/attachments/754122/Lightroom+export+plugin+20080523.42+screen+shot.jpg?version=1) of how your plugin screen should look like and make sure that you see the proper version number in it.
If you don't have the latest version *installed*, check these instructions on how to do that:

If you keep having problems, please post a screenshot of your plugin screen.

FYI: I was having problems, and found that I was NOT running the current version, even though I have installed it twice. I found out that, for some reason, I have this installed in two places on my Mac:
1) username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Modules
2) Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Modules
I suspose the first is user specific, the second is global. The second one is the one that counts, I believe I created the first by mistake last time I did an upgrade. Once I got the plug-in installed in the global folder, it works. Double clicking the plug-in made Finder automatically install, but in the 1st foler, by the way.

Andy,
Thanks again. I like the SmugMug Uploader until I have to upload 1000 photos from a show and then it takes too long. With the plug in I compress it to 30 (just like you guys recommend) and I can get all my photos up in about 1-2 hours.

I have used the LR plugin (for v1.3 on a Leopard iMac) successfully in the past. All of a sudden it stopped working. I get an error after the first file is uploaded. When you go to the d/l site and read the comments, there are a lot of recent posts that show the same issue. I assume there was a change in Smugmug that rendered the plugin ineffective.
there was no fix posted there, so I figured I'd try here to see if there is a workaround....

Jeffrey Friedl, developer of the plugin, has posted a new version to help with debugging of this issue. If you're having the issue, get the latest version of the plugin from http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/lightroom-smugmug/ and email the log to Jeffry.
Any updates on the Smugmug side? What changed this week roughly around Wed? Up until Wed I'd successfully loaded thousands of photos in the last couple of weeks with no errors. Now I can't export a single photo. No change in LR or plugin version.

I'm showing xxx.42 in the export dialog with a message that xxx.44 is available. I had downloaded .44 and installed per the instructions into a new "module" folder (Vista). How do I get it to stop recognizing the .42 version? I can't remember where that one installed.

Broken here too...Posted on Jeffery's site, but my post got deleted....others are seeing similar probs
I've tried everything that has been suggested up to this point (I think!). I"ve tried to remove old plug-ins in the Modules folder, even plug-ins at any other location on my hard drive, replace with current xxx.44 plug-in, restart LR and still nothing. As you can see from my screen shot, it still reads as an old plug-in (version 40). I can't find this file anywhere on my computer. Somehow, LR is "seeing it". What can I do?

Contact support.
I'm dead in the water with this as well. The support reply to me was basically not a SmugMug issue contact the developer.
I guess this must not be impacting that many people otherwise I'd expect it to get resolved. LR export went from working perfectly for me to not working at all. ... and no, I don't want to just use the SmugMug uploader.
I "switched" from Zenfolio a few months ago; though my account and photos are still active there. I like the ability to customize, but to be blunt after using Smug for a few months it's starting to feel like a house of cards in terms of reliability, stability and performance.

reliability issues with smugmug because a second party's uploader won't work? That's pretty harsh criticism to levy against SmugMug due to a second party.

Perhaps Mike; though when your system, as Smugmug's does, relies significantly on 3rd party softare the overall customer experience is dependent on how well the main vendor (Smugmug) works with the 3rd parties and vice versa.
With this issue, Jeffrey has continued to be extremely responsive. Smugmug has not been.
My comment with respect to reliability and performance is also in reference to issues broader than just LR export and very related to what I mention above and reliance on 3rd parties.
I'm currently running both Smugmug and Zenfolio and the quirkiness, reliability challenges with Smugmug have become increasingly apparent as I've used the system over the last few months. My hope is that the issues I'm experiencing will get resolved as I like the flexibility of Smugmug.

Agreed. I am using the Lightroom exporter, not on a daily basis but probably uploading 500-1000 photos a week. I rarely have troubles.
But I've been in the software industry for 28 years. I totally understand that everbody's system is different and everyone's experiences are different.
Personally, I hope that you get the issues resolved to your satisfaction. I switched to Smugmug from a self hosted/self fullfillment system, and couldn't be happier. But I've only been here for a short time. We'll see if the happiness continues.

LOL ... software industry for a couple of decades here as well. Jeffrey's first reaction from the error logs I sent was something on the Smugmug side, but he also thinks it may be related to his XML parser.
According to Jeffrey, Smugmug was going to do an update end of last week to help try to resolve this. No reply from Smugmug support other than the boilerplate reply.
LR Exporter worked perfectly for me for probably the first 2k+ photos.

umm last time I checked regex isn't an xml parser, that's half the problem.
Jeffrey is parsing our xml responses with regex, so if we make any additions to our response formats it breaks the lightroom uploader.

Just bumped into this problem and was able to fix it w/ the info posted. Here's what I did:
- Open a terminal
- cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Modules/
- rm -ri smugmug-jfriedl.lrplugin
- emptied trash
- downloaded .45
- clicked to install, worked like a champ, uploading a huge batch now
I assume that the plugin always installs in the user home directory, but if you want to make sure you don't have it installed somewhere else, you can run the following commands from the terminal:
- cd /
- find . -type d | grep -i smugmug
And then browse to the plugin location and remove as above.
Thanks again for those who mucked around with this to find the remove fix. :)

HELP...
I am having a tough time getting the LR smugmug plugin to to function properly at all.
My windows XP pro system is as follows:
xp pro
4gb ram
2.8 dual core intel
2 x 640gb hd
2 x 320gb hd
2 x 250gb hd
adobe LR 1.4.1 with latest xxx.46 smugmug plugin installed
I was able to load my 'first' gallery consisting of approx 200 photos successfully. However, anything following this will not upload properly - singles or multiples. I keep getting the error:
An internal error has occurred: Win32 API error . when calling
>> httpsendrequest. ' etc'.....
I have tried reinstalling LR twice with no improvement.
I have tried uploading files, folders, multiple files, single files... nothing seems to be uploading... it seems that it will load the first file that is highlighted in the group, but will not upload anything after that.... I then get the error msg.
pics are JPG and were either taken with a canon sd800 p&s or 40d.
Could the problem be the 'files' be 'too large' in size? Max size is about 5mb. I don't suspect this to be an issue though.
I have comcast broadband - so bandwidth should not be an issue.
I also disable my firewall and security mcafee suite to see if that was an issue... no difference...
Any help is appreciated. I am not a SW guru, and don't do any prgming except a little bit of html... but I am also not a sw hw idiot either... but I am not sure why I am getting the error?

Brian

You'll want to ensure that 'Minimize Embedded Metadata' is unchecked in the Export dialog, which allows all the wonderful info to be written to the JPEG.

You should be able to drop that directory into the directory that Lightroom needs it to be in. You shouldn't have to import the plugin, it should just show up when you go to export.

Right, I've looked through the web page on how to install it but the thing that seems to be missing is the file with the file extension of either "lrplugin" or "lrdevplugin". In all the files that get extracted from the downloaded zip file, there are no files with the previously mentioned file types. I've looked in every folder too.
I followed his directions exactly:
Installing a plugin for use with Lightroom 2 and later usually involves these steps:
Downloading a zip file from the plugin source.
Unzip the plugin, and move the resulting “...lrplugin” folder to wherever you'd like to store your plugins.
Bring up Lightroom's Plugin Manager and register that folder with the Add button.
(If prompted for a catalog update, do so.)
I downloaded the zip file here:
http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/smugmug/
I unzipped it and it created a new folder on my desktop. I took that entire folder (it is named: smugmug-jfriedl.lrplugin) and stashed it into a new "plugins" folder I created. The author says with LR 2, it doesn't matter where you put the unzipped folder, but I put it exactly where he suggested in his install notes. I then went into LR 2 and opened the Plug-in Manager tool and clicked Add. I browsed to the folder where the unzipped files are that are related to this new plug-in and it just does no file any file it likes so it never gives me the option to finish the process. Like I said, it never finds the 'supported' file type it's looking for so there's nothing to select.
That's my story. :)

Hold on....odd scenario here. It finally accepted it when I stopped at the FOLDER that was named with the ".lrplugin" I noticed that the add plug-in button highlighted when I had that folder selected....so it wasn't really a file it was looking for, it was the whole folder. Must have not noticed this when I was going through the process. Sorry

Hi Jim,
I'm not the expert here, but I had no problems using this smugmug plugin (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/smugmug/) within Lightroom 2 and 2.1. It works beautifully and saves me lots of time and effort.
However, I suspect your issue might be locating it within the EXPORT window, it's a bit tricky. After you install the plugin (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/plugin-installation/), when you choose the "FILE->EXPORT..." command, in the ensuing window, you need to click on the header area where it likely says "Files on Disk" and then choose SmugMug from the list (not Flickr as shown below). It's not entirely obvious that this graphical section of the window is basically a picklist of export options. I think they need to improve this part of Lightroom - at least by making those little up/down arrows larger.
http://regex.info/i/lr/ExportDestination.png
If this doesnt solve it for you, please ensure that you completely followed these instructions (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/plugin-installation/).
