Our holiday cards are available for creation and purchase, only by you - as a logged-in SmugMugger. Sure, we'd love to have the ability to have your customers configure, make and buy - but we don't have that yet.
For now, you can do lots of things to assist your customers :)
Holiday Cards:
Here's one way that I came up with (http://www.moonriverphotography.com/Clients/Choose-A-Holiday-Card/3848373_hdnfJ).
How to?
1. Make a new gallery.
2. Put this in the gallery description:
Mixed 4x8 and 5x7 Holiday Card sample gallery code:
<html>
<object align="middle" height="600" width="600">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf">
<param name="flashvars" value="feedURL=http://api.smugmug.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=userkeyword%2526NickName=cards%2526Da ta=christmas&transparent=true&crossFadeSpeed=500&clickUrl=http://www#46;smugmug#46;com">
<param name="wmode" value="transparent">
<param name="bgcolor" value="000000">
<param name="allowNetworking" value="all">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always">
<embed src="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf" flashvars="feedURL=http://api.smugmug.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=userkeyword%2526NickName=cards%2526Da ta=christmas&transparent=true&crossFadeSpeed=500&clickUrl=http://www#46;smugmug#46;com" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" height="600" width="600"></embed></object>
</html>
5x7 Card sample gallery code:
<html><div align="center" ><object height="600" width="800">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID=6567422&transparent=true&showThumbs=trie&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500">
<param name="wmode" value="transparent">
<param name="bgcolor" value="000000">
<param name="allowNetworking" value="all">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always">
<embed src="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID= 6567422&transparent=true&showThumbs=true&showLogo=false&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" height="600" width="800"></object>
</div>
</html>
4x8 Holiday Card Sample Code:
<html><div align="center" ><object height="600" width="800">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID=6549233&transparent=true&showThumbs=trie&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500">
<param name="wmode" value="transparent">
<param name="bgcolor" value="000000">
<param name="allowNetworking" value="all">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always">
<embed src="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID= 6549233&transparent=true&showThumbs=true&showLogo=false&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" height="600" width="800"></object>
</div>
</html>
To really make
it personal - use your OWN images, making up all the sample cards on your own :) But do feel free to use our sample gallery, it's no problem at all :)
Then, add your your own text, telling customers how they can choose, how you'll post it, and email them the link, and they can just buy it from your site :)
You'll want to add this to your CSS, as well:
.nophotos {display: none;}
.loggedIn .nophotos {display: block;}
Happy Carding!
<html>
<div align="center" ><object height="600" width="800">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID= 3824198&transparent=true&showThumbs=trie&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500">

</div>
</html>
EDIT: You don't need google checkout now :D http://blogs.smugmug.com/release-notes/2009/11/10/major-card-upgrade-november-10-2009/

<div align="center" >
<object height="600" width="800">

<param name="wmode" value="transparent">
<param name="bgcolor" value="000000">
<param name="allowNetworking" value="all">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always">

The code to copy - ignore that it says "php" here :)
<html>
<div align="center" >
<object height="600" width="800">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID=6567422&transparent=true&showThumbs=trie&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500">

Ooops sorry..didn't read far enough by that Nyquil pulled me under. You already included the code! Thanks man!

I came here to ask the same question! I had tried the custom option but, well you know, it's broken.
If I can design my own front, inside and back with the custom option, I will be extremely happy!

I feel like such an idiot when it comes to stuff like this! It should be as simple as copy and pasting the code into the gallery description & css, but I did that and.... nothing =( -sniff, sniff- I think I'm gonna cry LOL
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks in advance,

Seems the cards.smugmug.com galleries were just re-organized by category, which is great... except Andy's slide show idea will only show one category (xmas or Hanukkah, etc) instead of all the available designs. Is there a way for all the card designs to go back into one giant category so the slide show displays all the available designs?
I know I can download all the samples and upload them into one of my own galleries, but I'm sure it would be easier for all those that already have the slide show code in place.
thanks

THanks for the code for the 4x8 cards. I got it working on my site. But my clients want to see samples of the folded cards. What is the link for that sample gallery?
Also can we buy one of each design at some kind of price break? the 4x8 only come in packs of 20. Who wants 20 samples... I see the 5x7 can be ordered single...pricey but I guess worth it.

I'm not sure how many months ago I began asking for custom 5 x 7 folded note cards but..... you did finally came through!!!
Now: all I need now is for you to get "pro pricing" setup ( so we can add our profit margins) and we're really going to rock n roll !!!
Oh yes, and getting the custom card option fixed will be a fabulous start ;-)
Thank you Smugmug for adding this custom card option!
Happy Thanksgiving to the whole Smugmug team (in advance :-)
because you've given us more to be thankful for.

What currently will appear on the backs of the custom 5 x 7 folded cards?
Can we have something printed on the BACK of the cards?
Because right now the options appear are inside, outside, both.
Wouldn't it be cool if I could print 360photostock.com on the back of the cards so everyone who see's it will know which website gallery it came from ;-)
That... would be what they call "icing on the cake"
Have a great day,

I was hoping so based on this sample card:

It shows a design on the front, back and inside.

I don't see the back of that first card in your photo..... just the front and inside.
The second card / image shows something about "Green" on the back of the card... what's that all about anyway? Never seen anything like that on the back of a card :-)

Hi Andy,
Thank you for doing the cards.:D
How about price breaks? I've got a customer that wants 275 cards. No price break?
Also, for the prices you are asking how about return address on the envelopes?
I look forward to your setup for pro pricing.
Thanks, Coach Al

I'm sorry Al, we've already gotten the best possible pricing - check around :deal

I've seen pricing for return addresses on the labels, and it's nearly double our prices.

5x7 Cards:
Another Gallery, 5x7s (http://www.moonriverphotography.com/gallery/6567253_zWv4x).
How to?
1. Make a new gallery. Force style to allthumbs.
2. Put this in the gallery description:
<html>
<div align="center" ><object height="600" width="800">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.smugmug.com/ria/ShizamSlides-2007090601.swf?AlbumID= 3824198&transparent=true&showThumbs=trie&showButtons=true&crossFadeSpeed=500">

<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always">

</html>

Then, add your your own text, telling customers how they can pay you, and tell you what card, and what image. I use Google Checkout (http://checkout.google.com) but any payment mechanism will do :) Post your how-to questions in the customizing forum.
You'll want to add this to your CSS, as well:
.nophotos {display: none;}
.loggedIn .nophotos {display: block;}
Happy Carding!

I must be missing something...:dunnoHi Emily, you have printing set to "no" in your gallery customizing. Set it to yes and you'll be all set.

Well now, that's just a step beyond checking that your computer is plugged in before calling support. Way too easy! :rofl

I really don't understand, sorry :( If you are making your own template, you can print on the back. If you are using our custom design template, there's no text box on the back, sorry, but we'll look to add one maybe :thumb
Hi Andy - could you clarify the bolded statement I've quoted above? Is there some magic sized image I can upload that will be used to create a completely custom 5x7 folded card?
Perhaps I've missed something. If you can't currently do this, let me throw it out there as an idea that this would be awesome - and by awesome I mean, totally sweet.

I know, I know.. I need allot of help...:D
But I just need to make my greeting cards slide show fit into the theme box. It just needs to be a bit smaller. I tried to correct the object size in my description but it does not change. I just need the width a little smaller. Does anyone know how to do that? Again sorry for the needy-ness.
Does anyone know how to resize the greeting card slideshow to fit into my theme box? Heres the link:

Andy,
I created a couple of galleries using your script for photo cards and folding cards.
I find that the one for photo cards does not show all of the nearly 40 options. Can those be made available?
Also, the example you site seems to offer no way to interactively select a card design. Am I missing something? I think asking customers to describe a specific design from among 30 or 40 is a bit burdensome.
So my last question is, how can I create a similar slide show/ gallery for, say, a dozen designs that I'd like to offer, instead of the whole set?
Thanks,
Randy

Hi Andy,
I'm new to Smug Mug. Signed up for the Professional. When I was mentioning to my wife about the cards she said she loved to have some blank ones.
What are the chance of setting up the cards so customers can order just blank cards with no messages?
Thanks in advance

Your CSS is not enabled on that page.
Under customize gallery check "custom" for appearance and not "Smugmug".
You only need the third one below.
.nophotos {display: none;}
.loggedIn .nophotos {display: block;}

Our new holiday cards are available ... I mocked up a design in the SM card creator. Then I replaced the file in the My SmugMug Creations > Cards gallery with my own design file.
http://www.irenelucier.com/photos/429965970_qFMZY-M-1.jpg
Now, what I see in my shopping cart is my design. So it's all good and I can just order the cards as I designed. Right? I am a little concerned that I'm assuming to simple a process.

Our new holiday cards are available for creation and purchase, only by you - as a logged-in SmugMugger. Sure, we'd love to have the ability to have your customers configure, make and buy - but we don't have that yet.
For now, you can do lots of things to assist your customers :)
4x8 Cards:
Here's one way that I came up with (http://www.moonriverphotography.com/gallery/3848373).
5x7 Cards:
Another Gallery, 5x7s (http://www.moonriverphotography.com/gallery/6567253_zWv4x).
How to?
1. Make a new gallery. Force style to allthumbs.
2. Put this in the gallery description:
To really make it personal - use your OWN images, making up all the sample cards on your own :) But do feel free to use our sample gallery, it's no problem at all :)
Then, add your your own text, telling customers how they can pay you, and tell you what card, and what image. I use Google Checkout (http://checkout.google.com) but any payment mechanism will do :) Post your how-to questions in the customizing forum.
You'll want to add this to your CSS, as well:
.nophotos {display: none;}
.loggedIn .nophotos {display: block;}
Happy Carding!

Although I appreciate the work around, when will you provide a way for my customers to get greeting cards just like any other print? Even if it's jut folded cards? Instead of me creating the card and charging them, I much rather use the shopping cart you provide. Right now, the web site tells my customers to either create their own account - not great for my business - or go through me to create the cards. Both options are not great.
any help????

I uploaded images from the cards galleries to your site so they will be used for the category thumbs. I used css to hide the images in the gallery and some of the 'extra' gallery things. All the css I used is listed in your css section under /* cards galleries */
Is there anyway I could get the same help (as above) on my "Buy Cards - NEW!!!" gallery? I like the idea of not having the "Empty Gallery" image... Also, I tried making a card and clicked on the "Build It." It created the gallery and for some reason saved (initially) three separate images of the same Christmas card I was trying out as a test. Is there a reason it would make three of the same cards? The fourth one in my gallery is just a copy. Of course, I can't tell which is the copy I made and which are the other three that the SM Creator made, but there all in my "Cards" (unlisted) gallery. Maybe a computer glitch, but just checking in case there is a difference I'm not seeing in the initial three card images. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi,
I noticed your post regarding holiday cards - how are your customers selecting the cards and letting you know which card to use?
Also, I'd like to create gift box sets of cards or other products to sell with my images -is this the only method for a transaction like that? I'd have to set up a gallery for each product type? 5x7, 4x6, mugs, magnets.....? Any ideas or other user examples?
Thanks, Judy

Yes, right now you have to setup an extra gallery with sample cards to let your customers choose from and tell you which ones he want. Not very convenient for you or the customer.

OK, I'm still trying to figure out this completely bass-ackwards way of selling Christmas cards to my customers.. I think I figured out some of it, but you don't explain HOW to create our own sample card images or how to insert them into the magical code that you inserted up above.... also, how / where do we add the text explaining to people how to select the image they like and card style, etc.. and how do we include the text / link for a payment option (paypal, google checkout, etc)... ?

bump. I've been having similar problems. Mainly, I have spent LOTS of time creating my own sample cards (as suggested) but the 5x7s in particular are extremely hard to display.
For printing purposes the way they are shown is upside down, etc. which makes it very hard for customers to get the idea. Are you suggesting that we design a bunch of custom cards, order several different examples ourselves, photograph them, and then put those pictures of the cards in albums to be seen??? There's got to be an easier way, and perhaps I'm just missing it...

Hi Rachel,
Really valid concern. Selling cards this way is a clunky workaround, at best. We're actively working allowing pros to price cards they've already made and allow customers to add them to their shopping carts. It's coming soon, we hope.
However, the issue with 5x7 cards will remain because for the end customer (and even for you and to me), it's difficult to visualize the final card from the upside-down four-paneled image that we put in your gallery.
My advice (when we add this ability), is to be transparent in the gallery. Let the customer know that the card image will print properly, and point them to a corresponding folded preview on cards.smugmug.com .
If you're using our card maker to make the card, it may be more effort than it's worth, but I thought a bit about doing the following:
Create a gallery with prices zeroed out. Add an image that is just the front of the 5x7 card, and caption it appropriately. Rinse and repeat for the back of the card, and then one showing the spread-open inside of the card. Finally, add the 4-paneled output from the cardmaker (or that you made yourself) and put image pricing on it so that the customer can add it to their cart.
I whipped up a sample gallery here:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/9895942_hB3qa
It took about 5 minutes to make the front/middle/back views and get them added, but I think it's worth it to give the customer a good look at the text and images.
In this case, I made the card from one of SmugMug's designs so I could also point to the 3D preview on cards.smugmug.com, but more likely the customer had already browsed the designs there to select the one she wanted.
I hope this helps somewhat! I am sorry the current workaround is so cumbersome. I'm burning the midnight oil to get the changes out as soon as I can!

That's looking really good. I fixed your email link (needed a mailto: in your href) .
As I understand it, making your email address obvious doesn't garner any additional spam but it does help your customers who don't have their default mail client set up properly. So having myemail@email.com as the clickable link allows people to type it in or easily copy and paste into gmail or hotmail or whatever service they use.

You'll want to add this to your CSS, as well:
.nophotos {display: none;}
.loggedIn .nophotos {display: block;}
Happy Carding!

I see you figured out how to get your own photos into the slideshow.
I still have Andy's samples - can you share how you did it?
Thanks,
JP
Can you please explain how we can do this: "To really make it personal - use your OWN images, making up all the sample cards on your own"?
I've created a separate gallery of sample cards that I'd like to use instead of the sample cards show in the code you put together... but I'm not sure how to do it.

I have tested a few cards and used the customized one with the photo on the front, but I saw no option to change the font using a MAC and Safari.
Did I miss that or do I have to use something else?
I just want to know if I change the fonts, sizes, etc.
thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! Is there a new code that has all of the holiday cards including holiday, Christmas, Chanukah? I notice when I'm logged in to Smug Mug as me I can see a whole bunch of other cards that are not coming up when I make a gallery with this code. Hope that makes sense and let me know! Heather

or, if i take the images for the other samples (baby, xmas, etc) and upload those to my site, how do i then get them to a flash slideshow?

Hmm so the sample code is pulling just a single gallery from cards.smugmug.com, but the problem is the sample cards are divvied up so different holidays each have their own gallery.
Would you still need/want this type of setup if we let you price and sell cards through the shopping cart? Or would you feel comfortable sending clients to cards.smugmug.com to browse there...

well, what i actually ended up doing was creating my own flash for the xmas cards, just like the holiday cards...thanks!
if enabled to allow clients to purchase, i don't think this would be needed....

I would REALLY love for my customers to be able to buy their own cards. All my clients are set up to proof their images and buy their prints through SmugMug, but the cards situation is much too complicated.
Is there any chance this is going to happen before the holidays this year? I can guarantee that at least half my clients would jump on cards if it was all in the same place as prints.
Thanks!

Also, along the same lines (and a search didn't yield any results), is there a PDF file available with all the card templates that pros can print off to show to and give to clients? It's nice to be able to hand families a printed page with the templates to look at offline. I have one from MPix that they just sent out, but I can't seem to find one for SmugMug.
Thanks!

I don't doubt for a minute the SmugMug team is busting their butts to get this done (I can only imagine the technical issues). You guys rock!
In the meantime, would it be possible to have made available a downloadable PDF of all the templates that we could print out and hand out to clients with their printed proofs? I don't mind setting up and ordering my clients' cards, necessarily, but I hate to hand them proofs and make them go to the Web to view templates (which aren't really numbered or ID'd in a way that makes it easy for clients to select a design). MPix sent me a PDF of all their templates, and while I will be using SM for my cards, I'd love a good way for clients to select, offline, their designs of choice in that manner.
Thanks SM team!

Hi,
I had added the code (at the beginning of this thread)
for my holiday card galleries here:
http://www.rebeccabrittain.com/Client/Holiday-Cards
The 5x7 gallery is fine, but now the 4x8 gallery is asking for a password out of the blue...I never made a password, so what is up?
Did I miss something in the code or is something else screwed up? It just started this, it was fine a few days ago.
Thanks!
EDIT:
Ooops, I just saw where work is being done on the card gallery...I'll check back and see if that's the problem!

I build the card that the customer wants, put it in this gallery where I have applied Pro Pricing to and they can order it just like any other print. Seems to work very well.

I was looking into setting up the cards on my own site yesterday and got stuck at:
1) How would the customer specify which card they want (using the moonriver slideshow as an example)
2) It would be really nice to be able to see the complete outside and inside of each 5x7 card. There are several example cards that do not provide links to an image of the inside and/or back of the card.
There is at least one supplied link that is broken...
The inside bottom link for card 6 of 25 is broken:
http://cards.smugmug.com/photos/709970235_rtYtg0-O.jpg
P.S. It would be REALLY nice if all of the designs were made available for download in ZIP format so we could then selective decide which ones we want to offer and upload to our own galleries.

Sorry for the delay in responding to the issues you all raised. I really appreciate the feedback!
I fixed the broken link reported to the bottom inside of one card:
http://cards.smugmug.com/photos/709970235_rtYtg-O.jpg
I'll gladly add more artwork details when I can. I'm happy to hear they're helpful!
I do NOT recommend relying on a design's position in a gallery for identification because the galleries absolutely change as we add new designs.
I had envisioned customers using the "Share" button to either send an email to their photographer or use the Get a Link feature to copy a link to the design they like best. However, it does sound like a unique identifier in the caption would be best. I worry about pros being able to quickly find the card the customer is referring to, however, so the identifier will need to be search-friendly.
I'll play with this more and hopefully have something late tonight that will be a significant improvement. :thumb

2. Put this in the gallery description:

I posted this as a comment to the blog post (http://blogs.smugmug.com/release-notes/2009/11/10/major-card-upgrade-november-10-2009/), but clearly there is way more traffic here...
My gripe is that the images of the (5x7) cards (the method we are expected to sell them by) are way confusing to me. I mean, I get it. 4 sides of a card, etc etc. Except that the consumers don’t think that way. And the picture that is supposed to sell the card is small and upside down. Here’s how I would hope to improve this:
1) Just show the cover image, and definitely not upside down.
2) Allow the customer to choose text they want inside
3) At the same time allowing the pro to indicate which blocks consumers can add/ edit text to (I don’t want them to edit my slogan on the back of the card for example)
For such a big thing, I would have expected better execution.

Hi,
So sorry to keep you waiting on this. I didn't want to lead you astray and was not very familiar with Andy's suggested workaround.
However, I think I understand the situation now. It's easy to make a feed from a certain keyword, but I'm not sure there's a keyword that's a perfect fit currently. "5x7 folded" will get all the 5x7 cards, but it includes some that may not apply like graduation announcements. "4x8 flat" will get all 4x8 cards. "Winter Holiday" will pull up all Christmas, Hannukah, and generic holiday cards but it tags both 4x8 and 5x7 designs so you'll end up with a gallery that has both.
It's possible I could rekeyword to be format AND occasion specific in a single keyword. However, we are working on a *much* better solution and to be honest I feel like my time is better spent working to get that out the door, rather than making the current workarounds marginally more useful. I hope that seems reasonable.
If you do want to use a different keyword feed URL, you can click Share > Get a Link > Feed Links . Then choose "Keyword", type in "Winter Holiday" or "5x7 folded" and choose the image size.
The URL it generates can be substituted into the embed code Andy provided. Make sense?

Thanks for the feedback. I absolutely agree, but the image the lab needs to print the cards properly is exactly what you see generated and stored in the gallery. Currently we store it like any other image on SmugMug, so it would require a major change to display one thing in a gallery and send something else entirely to the lab. I'm not saying it's not possible we'll do that, but just that it's a much bigger change than it may appear at first glance.
We'll definitely try and be sensitive to the end user's view of the card if/when we allow guests to create cards. Thanks again!

The creation process results in an image, it's not a db of stored data. So you would need to re-create it.

We don't like to give dates, in general. However, I can certainly see why you'd have an interest in knowing specifics in this case! Unfortunately, we're at a place where we actually don't know when the feature will be ready. It could be as soon as a week, but I could also see it taking a month or more.
I would say it's probably worth your time to make the workaround functional on your site, but I wouldn't bother fine-tuning it or trying to smooth out all the rough edges. How's that for helpful? Sorry I can't do better than that at this point. :dunno

Wow. I gotta be honest, this card-selling process is about as un-friendly as can be for Pros. I can see how it would be a fairly nice feature if I were trying to create cards for myself. But trying to create a product for a client is a nightmare.
The entire process - from client card selection (they still have no way to identify the cards), to card creation (we can't zoom in? we can't change the font?), to card revision (we have to re-create the card from scratch every time the client wants us to change anything..) - is absolutely terrible, and not worth the time, nor the effort, nor the minimal profit to be made.
I love you, SmugMug. Truly. And I really don't like to complain on these boards about features that don't meet my needs. But this one is really half-baked for Pros. Maybe it's not a priority, and that's cool.. but let's not pretend. The ability to price cards for sale to clients was a nice addition this year, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. The rest of the workflow needs some serious attention if selling cards to clients is ever going to be a really valuable SmugMug feature.

The rest of the workflow needs some serious attention if selling cards to clients is ever going to be a really valuable SmugMug feature.I love the feedback - we'll all read it, and we'll improve the process.
Thanks for your passionate post - please don't ever stop.

This has now been improved greatly. Logged out visitors can create and purchase their own cards if you have set custom prices on the portfolio or gallery level. It was a surprisingly complicated and difficult thing to do, but we believe this is a vast improvement for many of you.
We'll have more details soon on our Release Notes blog (http://blogs.smugmug.com/release-notes/).

Thanks for this new feature. I tried it just now, and only the last picture that was previewed shows up in the card creation page.
I received the notification through release notes, and this is what #2 had -
2. When they click the Photos Tab in the card creator, they will only see photos from the gallery they were viewing when they chose Create a Card.[/FONT]
The word "Photos" is used and I thought it would be cool if it brings up more than one photo in the card viewer. Just my thought.[/FONT]

Sorry about this, I didnt see what was coming -
Ok, I didn't go as far as creating the card - where you can actually click on photos, and it will bring up the other photos in the gallery.
I will go and wash my face now, and maybe I will catch a wake up (-:
Well done with this feature Smugs - this helps a LOT!!

This may have already been asked in the previous 15+ pages of commentary on this "Card" process but I couldn't find it. To me the process would seem fairly straight forward:
1) I take pictures of the client and put them in a secure gallery for my client to review and purchase prints.
2) The client goes through and chooses a picture(s) that they want to put on a Card (be it Holiday or any other rendition) and they click "Create Card"
3) The client goes through the process of choosing a template using their image(s) and creates the card and buys it through the same venue they buy their other prints from.
Why has it become so darn frustratingly complicated where we can't have the feature of letting our clients choose, create and buy a dang card right from the dang gallery? This is probably one of the most frustrating issues I have had in 2 years with SM aside from the previous major outages. Please, Please, PLEASE tell me this will be rectified soon.

I dunno if you saw the release notes from last night, but in case not:

Once you've priced cards for a gallery, your customer can just go to the gallery and choose both a card design and photos to go with using the card creator. Here's one of my galleries, where I priced 5x7 cards, to try it:

I hope this helps!

Hey Chris,
As a client, you select "Create A Card" from the Buy menu, the gallery from which you launched the Create A Card option from does not default as the availble image pool. The second time I went in it had a Photo tab with the option for public or private and then it displayed all of my galleries. It would seem that there may be a bug. I think that the photos from within the gallery you are in should be the ones that are available to the visitor for selection and no more than that.
EDIT: It seems that if you select a public gallery the photos appear instantly but when selecting a private gallery they do not load at all. Does this not work at all for private galleries? That would be a bummer since all of my clients use the private gallery.
Thanks kindly,
Randy

Sorry folks, we're chasing a bug that prevents photos from loading for guests creating a card from a password-protected gallery.
All non-passworded galleries should work fine, so if you see anything out of the ordinary, please let us know!

Thanks Anne. Is the anticipated functionality to have the photos that are displayed automatcially be from the gallery from which you initiated the "Create A Card" functionality? I think this would be the most ideal solution.

I have a public gallery with the pricing setup for cards and only the photo that was selected when you goto 'Buy', 'Create a card' will show up. After you select the size and styling of the card, the photo tab appears but when you click on it, you just get the loading symbol and no photos actually load. The gallery is a public gallery and no password. Any thoughts?

Everything seems to work perfectly for me in that gallery. Can you tell me which browser you were using? And were you logged out or just in visitor view?

Anne,
It seems that the current functionality still requires the user to first select Private or Public and then select the gallery from that Category. Just to confirm that the targe functionality does NOT require the user (customer) to select the gallery and that as part of your current troubleshooting this will be resolved?
Thanks for your help.

Yes, I think we're saying the same thing. Whichever gallery they are in when they click Buy > Create a Card, that will be the only gallery they can retrieve photos from to create the card. And, there is no dropdown/chooser to find a gallery in the card maker itself. It just displays the photos from the gallery without any option to go elsewhere for photos.

I am super excited about this! Thanks so much for letting customers order their own cards. I just wish this was in place a bit sooner in time for Christmas. That's ok though, next year I will market this big time.
I have not yet looked at every card design. I shoot weddings. It would be great if you had Save the Date cards. If you do have them, excellent! If not, can you please consider adding some in the future?
All the best.

This is outstanding!! Glad you guys got it figured out.. I just played around with it and it seems to be exactly what we were looking for! Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but the prices are still rather high for most people (I know that this year, I used Walmart for my 4x8 Christmas cards, and was able to upload my photos, design the cards and get them printed up at the store for pickup the following day... 45 cards cost me $18. .... I think that the Smugmug pricepoint is going to be one of the more prohibitive aspects of this new feature, especially by the time we (the photogs) add in our mark-up on the pricing. It's hard to justify much mark-up when we know what other services are out there for the 4x8 cards, at very competitive prices.
I will definitely be marketing this new idea though... thank you!!!:barb

I agree about the pricing of the cards. Even at our cost, it's a good bit higher than what we could get ourselves at consumers outlets or even labs.

Hey Ann,
One last thing. I just priced my cards and all looks good. So I logged out, went to a gallery, went to a photo and went to the card maker and I noticed that all of my branding was gone. The card screen is standard Smugmug black and my header is gone.
Please... if possible, it would be great to be able to keep our branding and color scheme so the experience is consistent. Ther more continuity, the better. Please pass this on the powers that be. Thanks for listening! And again, thanks for all you guys do. :D

Hi Andy,
We have been trying to get our pictures to work in the blank greeting card format without success. When it's too large, it cuts the picture off and it won't let us re-size it because it's already at the smallest re-size point. When it's too small, it doesn't allow the picture to be placed in the image placeholder at all. We've tried many different pixel sizes to try to get it to work with the following results:
2400x1600 was too big and cut
2100x1400 was too small to use.
2300x1533 was also too big.
2200x1466 was also too big.
What is the problem? Would really appreciate help on this one. Very frustrated.
Thanks.

Lawrence,
The specs for our photo cards can be found here:

4x8 photo cards require a 2400x1200 pixel photo.

Hi, don't see a custom option, would also just like customers to be able to choose an image for a borderless 5x7 (or 3x5 if possible) with perhaps my url on the blank back. If Costco can do it.....:D

Select a card type and then the anything (for 5x7) or more (for 4x8) category. The first two layouts in those categories allow for a full size front. In case of the 5x7 folded cards, there is room for custom text on the inside and back.
While you can't modify cards created by customers during proof delay, you could go about downloading the card and making changes to the card photo in Photoshop (just make sure not to change the basic specs or rotate the card). Or you could create a new card from scratch in our card creator with changes, download it and then replace the customer created card with your new version.

Is it possible to add branding (logo + text) on the back of 5x7 cards?

There are blank templates available in the card builder program, but at the moment, the blank templates only allow for text on the back of cards and on the inside. If you want a logo on the back, what you could do would be to create your own card in Photoshop, using the guidelines on this page:
http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/84503
Then, upload that image to a gallery and click Buy > This Photo > Cards, and you can add the 5x7 cards to your shopping cart.

Thanks mrjosh. Unfortunately I don't see the option "Cards" when I go to Buy > This Photo. Is it hidden in one of the tabs? Do I need to do anything in pricing? I do see Buy > Create a Card when I'm logged in as well as when I am not.
