This next shot is on the backside of Hunting Island looking out across the marshes. The hurricane sky is still evident as well as the storm surge causing the water level to be well above the normal high water mark with Hurricane Francis hundreds of miles away.

Tell me about it. We had sailed from Charleston, SC down to Beaufort, SC the Wednesday before Francis came ashore. We burned up the diesel engine fighting the storm surges trying to get back to Charleston after Francis came ashore. This shot was taken the day before Francis hit Florida. Actually, the sea intake valve for the saltwater cooling clogged with debris kicked up by the storm surge just before we entered Charleston harbor from the ICW. There we ran into 35-40 knot winds and waves 2-4 feet hitting us head on. At that point we were beyond the point of no return and no way to clear the intake valve. By the time we got back into our berth it was too late to save the engine.

The reason Panama City, FL is still on the stern is because that is where I bought the boat and then spent 18 days sailing it to Charleston, SC. ...but that's another story.

Do you spend any more time in Charleston, SC. That is where I live, and I never leave it. I live in Mt Pleasant. Generally stay east of the Cooper, don't know what marina you would use, but I could meet you anywhere.

Ginger, Opus is berthed at Charleston Harbor Marina and Resort (Patriot's Point). I grew up in the Charleston area and two of our four kids and seven grandkids still live in the Charleston area. I just refuse to put a 30 foot sailboat on a lake in Alabama when we go over to Charleston all the time and with the kids and grandkids there it gets put to much better use. ...or will when I get through shelling out the $9,000 plus it is going to take to replace the engine. That should be done by the end of this month.

Opus is the first sailboat which I've owned, but I've sailed Charleston and surrounding areas for over 20 years. One of my brothers had a number of sailboats and until he gave up sailing I never needed one of my own.

We could meet to shoot some birds (for some reason that doesn't sound right) that will impress HarryB. :rofl

Here's one I shot back in 2003 at the marina. Strong backlighting coming from the east about 6:30 in the morning. Plus, it has the distracting marsh grass in the lower right corner.

Cool Heron. I got a skimmer, skimming at the Marina in Chas on the Ashley River last summer. I should go hang out at marinas more.

I just remembered this post, so just found your answer. That is great that you spend time around here. I would love to go out and shoot birds.

I am wondering about their migration patterns. Like do they all leave Harry, hehe, and come up here at some point. I have never shot birds before Harry started this insane thing. I have found sitting waiting on birds to be very centering, keeps me sane. I have to be half way sane to shoot a Challenge.

I do enjoy your photography. You get such vivid colors. And the planning you do. It sure pays off. I kind of go like the wind.........no planning whatsoever. Except sunsets, sunrises and the sweet light. But I don't really know what affect I am going to find until I get there. And sometimes I just can't wait for those good times, I will shoot at noon when we get out of church.

I really admire your results.

I have lived in this area, until Hugo, on Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms, now Mt Pleasant, since 1984. I mostly grew up outside of Detroit, but I love the south.
