Lake Michigan from NW Indiana

These are from the Indiana Dunes state park. I try to go there as often as I can for sunsets. They aren't all spectacular but, Thursday was great and Friday was pretty good too. All were shot with a Nikon D80 through a Sigma 10-20mm and a 3 stop hard ND filter (Some could use a 2 stop but, I've yet to aquire one). More can be seen on my website. Thanks for looking. Really nice images! I particularly like 1-3-5. The red part of the sky shining in the glossy/wet part of the sand in the first one is really great :) The fence is a bit dark in the third one, but i still like it a lot!

I'm curious about your technique, though? Did you use the ND filter to extend the exposure times?

I enjoyed these, thanks. They have the mood of twilight and the extravagant space of the seashore. The skyscapes and light are like airy, loose clothing over the ground. The composition of the fourth is very fine, with its soft, fluid drive towards the horizon and the anonymous but unignorable sculpture of the foreground sand.

I like the 1st and 5h the most. The one with the fences needs a little more light on the fence to be superb but they are all nicely done. :clap

Thank you all for the encouraging words.:D I hear you about that dark fence. Maybe I'll play in photoshop with it or maybe I'll reshoot it.:dunno

xris, the filter i used was a 3 stop split neutral density filter. The exposures got longer due to the ever decreacing light.

Oh! So only half the field is ND then, and you used it to bring the sky down 3 stops then? Very kool!

Very nice! I love the beautiful colors and the contrast in the sky. I agree with the fence being a bit dark but the lighting situation of the location is a tricky one. Great job :thumb

Although looking back, the difference between the sky and the ground is greater than 3 stops. It would seem I need to get some more filters. Photography is expensive.:cry

Re #3, when is a silhouette not a silhouette... To me, the fence is fine, as an almost silhouette. I would like to see more of what is intervening between it and the horizon, more detail/perspective in what is now quite indistinct.

The southern tip of Lake Michigan gets near constant wind. There are always interesting patterns in the sand. Even these wierd pottery like formations that I've only ever seen once:
