I really did sit in my chair and think of a minimal scene. it wasn't working. at all. So i grabbed my flash and did this.

Comment away... on composition and lighting, and so on, not on my overly bushy eyebrow! :wxwax :lol3

I like what you are working on. I think you should get closer and only have part of your face in the shot.
Like this effect.(I hope you do not mind)

I agree with Shakey. Paring the portrait down to the profile is very minimalist. Why can I see it in other peoples stuff, but I can't seem to be able to do it myself?

My first thought was...Oh yeah! That is a great shot, but I must agree after looking closer that a tight crop makes it a fabulous shot! But, that's just me and I LOVE tight crops, they can be sooo expressive!

:photo I completely agree with cropping but still find this crop too close. Some more light background on the right would show more contrast and positively change the 50-50 proportion...
Excellent idea overall!!!:clap

Yeah! It is intrinsically a good shot, now it just needs perfecting.

Roger's correct - I slightly wider crop would be even better.

Reminds me of Morgan Freeman in The Electric Company.

Great start, agree about the cropping thing.

thanks for all the comments...

I was hesitant to crop because the natural way the light from the flash naturally dispersed was a rather pleasing pattern. I did want to make it as stark a contrast as possible, but had trouble diffusing the light from the flash. If I could spread it to more of the wall, it would be better.

I don't have a softbox, anyone have any suggestions for pennytech home studio mods???

Maybe if you could find a plain white paper cup (or a thin styrofoam cup) that was large enough to fit over the head of the flash :dunno

I like your original better than the cropped versions.

I don't know what a soft box is but 2 cheapy ways to diffuse / reflect light...

diffuse: buy an inexpensive needlepoint hoop at a craft store and tape drafting paper (vellum) to it.

reflect: use one of those reflective, silver nylon windshield sun blockers

I really like your shot and the idea behind it. I think it would be better if you cropped it and showed the most dramatic lines of your face. I was also thinking that, I know this may be picky or weird, if you shaved you would have much cleaner lines. Just a thought.

I diffused the lighting, and added another silhouette... but I still just don't know if this is really minimalist.
