Name that Spider...

Not the best shot in the world...however, this guy was HUGE! The knot in the tree was bigger than my two fists put together. THAT was his HOME!! Found him while on a nature walk. It was very overcast and we were in the woods basically. No bright colors to see here...Anyone know what he is?

Spiders come closer than anything else to weirding me out, which sorta gives me a strange interest in them. We don't have anything serious here in AK though. While in the phillipines a few years back, I ran across a spider easily six inches across, and all fuzzy. I swung a hammer at it, and it disappeared. Vanished. GONE.

I took a few steps back rather quickly. Any spider that can dodge a hammer deserves a little respect.:rofl

As far as this image, the only thing that I don't like is that the legs blend in too well. Kinda lessens the effect some, I think.

Hopefully, Skippy will chime in on this one. She has a portfolio of some of the meanest ugliest spideys know to man (or to woman). You know, those Ozzie spiders? The ones that can bring down a bull with one bite :yikes

I don't like these guys either. I would have shot once and boogied on down the highway, before I found out if he could fly or jump.....lol

I thought he might have gotten a little offended if I asked to take a pic of his tush. My SO who is the biggest weenie when it comes to the smallest of spiders was gooooooone in a split second. I tried to talk him into holding something up next to it so that his massive size would be shown...but alas, that did not happen. I did try asking his name, but I don't think he spoke English either.

No, I don't have any other shots of him. I took this one and was wisked away by the screamin' weenie:D . If anyone figures out what he is, let me know. I did take a look at his tush and it was about the size of a nickle, hairy and kinda grayish-brown in color. His legs had to have been 2"-3" long. I've only seen those kind of legs on a daddy long legs, ha ha:rofl . Thanks for trying to help identify though! Mucho appreciated~

Its a Huntsman...look at how the front legs angle back in...dead givaway.They are always know to grow large...i have seen them easily 8" across.

Carolina Wolf Spider. Body can be light grey to brown. Females are 1.5x larger than males. Either way, they are the largest spider in north America. I will dispute that fact, since once long ago I opened a bike carton that came in from Taiwan, and there was a live Banana Spider in it, and it was larger than this, though not native to this country. :yikes

I was thinking that david as its caprice looks identicle to our wolf but i was certain those front legs were a huntsman.
