I'd like a two column gallery with the text description in the left column and thumbnails on the right. Is there an example customization out there that I can work from?

At first I thought that a journal-style gallery with photos on one side and text on the other (instead of alternating) might work, but when I re-read your request I saw that you said "thumbnails on the right" - so I'm not sure what you are looking for.
In the event that a journal-style gallery with photos on one side and text on the other would fit your gallery desires, it might be worth trying this: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=24159

Thanks Denise,
No I am looking for a regular gallery, not a journal style. Description left, several pics or thumbnails on the left.
Looks like I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry.

Well, you already know there isn't a standard style that looks like that... But have you considered using an html-only gallery? That would allow you to format the page however you want.
You may already know about html-only galleries, but in case you don't, here are some examples:
My Kaleidoscope gallery (http://denise.smugmug.com/gallery/2659217) is an html-only gallery, as is my Gallery gallery (http://denise.smugmug.com/gallery/3242019).
And Allen has created a tutorial here - http://allen-steve.smugmug.com/gallery/2320726

The gallery description is on the left and photos are on the right. I didn't play around with individual image captions but they could probably be moved as well.
