WOW hdr at the dentist!!!!!! Awesome!!!!! very kool...... thx for the share
is that actually hdr?
some may be aware that i am generally not a fan of over-processed, over-sharpened photos, but i think it might work for this shot.:thumb
i would love to see the original version because i think it would make for a great shot even without the processing.

Not trying to steal your style or anything but i really love the feel of your photos. What kind of PP are you doing to get this ? that is if you dont mind me asking.

no, it's not hdr-
rtp is correct in it's somewhat dave hill's look (hah! got a ways to go!)-
little t- not my style to steal!-
here is what I start with:
http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/2007/video-surreal-edgy-effect/
this can also be done in adobe acr-
then I'll use different blend modes and/or advanced shadows/highlights to get the photo where I want it-
I'll post a copy of the raw file a little later-
thanks all for the comments!-

George, you probably already know what I'll say, but I'll say it anyway.
The idea for the picture is fantastic. I mean, how many people do you
know who would take their cameras with them to the dentist and then
actually use them while they're being tormented?! Not many. But
the post processing just kills it for me. So pleeeeease post the unedited
version for us simple folk, who are unable to get down with the funk-ay
Photoshop ninja skillz, so that we can appreciate the image you captured
in all its unedited glory.
Thanks in advance.

Very cool! I love how it gives it a bit edgier of a feel....
And I also like how you get a pretty stark division of people liking/hating the processing.... I think sometimes it's overdone, but for some reason, it really fits this shot! Nicely done.

The processing really makes this shot memorable. Well done. :thumb I just hope you're not due for a colonoscopy any time soon.
Cheers,
Great shot George...what did the dentist think about your taking pictures :clap :clap :clap

I combined the original with your processed version and I think that's the way
I like it the most. :)
Processing aside, I reiterate - the shot is great.

It is great to see the original. You started with a well framed shot with all the elements to make it an unusual and interesting environmental portrait that captures an experience that we can all recognize but of which we rarely see photographs. Then you performed the special gf magic that elicits an emotional response beyond the initial curious interest. The bright colors and sharp contrast put me figuratively on the edge of my seat - as though the novacaine (or whatever) may not do the job as the drill goes deeper. Been there. Hated that. Feel lots as I look at the photo. The PP works for sure.

George I have to agree w/Virginia (she says it so well!). This is one time I like the processed version better than the original. The high contrast and brightened scene just bring the shot alive. I can almost hear that blasted drill whirring in my mind! (I just finished up with a new crown, so I can really relate!) Great job!!!

Its kinda funny cuz' this type of over-hdr'ing was looked down upon not only a few months ago, but everyone seems to be really into it now.
Dave Hill and all the other HDR-crazies has taken it to a really clean level perfecting their craft to a point where its almost indistinguishable from a sketching/painting.
Its cool that you guys are getting into it though, I love the way these type of fotos come out when done right and its a lot of work to do just right.
Some extra things to try and include to your one-step program lol: don't stick with just one-step-automation via Photomatix software by using three+ images ranging from 1-2 stops, instead try shooting and adjusting via RAW files, have more than 4 or 5 images to work with then combine them and work with tone-mapping or simply just working with contrast. If you work with RAW images where you increased the 'fill-light' with more 'hightlights' by toning it down, you'll get smoother transitions and overall nicer effects away from crazy transition of contrast and colors from each lines and shadows/highlights.
I haven't even mastered this crazy little craft, but I know working with RAW in creating the images used to stack up to the final product is key to achieving those results.
Just my $0.02.
Hope to see more soon. ;)

Such a cool perspective! And I love the processing on this shot. On some of them I'm not crazy about it, but it works excellent on this one!

thanks for this george...I spent a nerve wracking afternoon at the dentist yesterday and I love this shot! I can totally relate! AND I just love your processing as always, it fits this shot SO well.
Are you going to show your dentist?

great shot and right up my alley..
so you used the killer tips huh? i like the way that works too, do you have the photomatix software? if so, have you tried doing the one RAW file pseudo HDR? it might help. I think the processed image is waaaay more interesting that the straight image.. but im a bit biased there cause i LOVE the over the top "tone mapped" look anyhow. Dave Hill is my fave and wile i know i wont get his or Greenburg's look without using lots of lighting, i do know i can come a tad closer with these tricks. Good luck with it, youre doing great!

I was at the dentist yesterday for a nerve wracking morning and pondering a photo like this. Congrats on actually doing it. I've done a similar shot when getting a tattoo... but the dentist? That sheer insanity! :D
