What browser and OS are you seeing this with?
I checked in the other thread and Firebug shows no errors using Firefox.

I half fixed it, I followed this thread http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=23796&page=2&highlight=filmstrip which fixed me getting the JS error by turning on the comments for the gallery (guess the bug never got fixed) but i still have the problem with the pictures not always showing up and i get a grey box?

Seem to work ok here (IE7)
I've had issues sometimes like you described, but they have been with any internet site... not just SmugMug... I think it's just a known Java bug...

did you click on a lot of thumbs? i've tried it on several IE7 computers and they all do it. The sure fire way i can get to do it usually is click on a thumb then go back and click the same thumb. The page seems to work fine in ie 6 and other browsers so it seems to just be an IE7 thing which kinda stinks, if it wasn't a site to show photos i'd live with it but cause of the nature of the site is to show photos i'll probably have to use another layout.

Well... good news and bad news...
good news being... yes... I was able to duplicate the problem in IE7
the bad news... I have absolutely no idea how to fix it :( Maybe some Java Scripting/debugging may be in order, but I'm definately not the right guy for that.
Hopefully someone will chime in here that can help.

I had a friend with smugmug change one of his galleries to filmstrip and it does the same thing so its deff a bug with ie7 and the filmstrip view. Oh well i'll just pick another view and check back every now and then to see if it gets fixed. Hopefully someone will find it.
