Not sure I understand the reference to "side mount" - Like the old Metz Wedding strobe that fit on a bracket at the side of the camera body that screwed into the tripod thread?

Yes exactly! A nice size flash that had it's own bracket so the flash didn't sit on the shoe directly on top of the camera.

Anyone have any idea how the CP-E3 will compare to a Quantum Turbo in terms of recycle? The Canon is a lot cheaper. I figure load it up with eight 2300 mAH NiMH batteries... Plus it looks small, and has the cable already.

Bill, I don't have any hands on experience with either, *but* I've been reading up on the Canon unit a bit.
There have been a couple of posts about it over at FM. One photog reported using one all day for a wedding and claimed it was still going strong when he packed up for the night. I'm not sure, but I believe this was with a 550EX on either a 20D or a 1D MkII.
Another tip: Seems if you go to Amazon.com and look for the CP-E3 you will see it listed for $108 *used*. If you click on that link it will take you to Willoughbys (sp?) and it is listed a *new*. People have reported that it is indeed *new* and it is only $108 (as of today it was still listed at that price). I have never dealt with Willoughbys, but a few people have said they are legit.
Hope this was somewhat helpful...
