Man, these guys can really go for it.
You can easily fill-up a couple of CF cards on this kind of nonstop action.
I'd say love nor hate. See the third Coot in the second picture? That's the referee, just another Ali/Frazier match:D

Wait !! was it something I said

Great action. Not sure what they are doing but from all the fights I've seen break out lately between all the different birds it seems they they all have this love-hate relationship when it comes to mating.

Ya know the other thing that surprised me about Coots. For all the time they spend on the water.. they don't have webbed feet.

Great catch. I think one is a Nikon owner and the other a Canon owner. :DI believe :deal :huh but if that was true the canon owner would have scared the other wildlife away :cry ask Russ :rolleyes

Fantastic series!

This is definitely not mating. Birds are pretty straight up fella on top when they are mating. And very quick, too. Most mating encounters are seconds long. Plus it's not mating season. You'll see mating behavior mostly in early spring, depending on the species.

So it's some kind of rivaly/aggression, although I've never seen coots fight this way. However, it is very common for some birds to fight primarily with their feet.

I agree with Harv-- a couple of old coots arguing about cameras.... in a pretty kinky kind of way. Nice shots in any case!

The red mark on the forehead is common to adult coots, both male and female, I think. First year, or immature, coots probably won't have it.

Great shots!
