Hi. I'm new to Dgrin, but have had a pro smugmug page for a little over a year. I've been reading many tutorials on how to customize a smugmug site, but am having many problems. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

My site is machlinimaging.smugmug.com.

First of all, I'd like advice on the overall design of my page. If I had time, I'd try to learn how to make a good looking theme myself, but lack the time and knowledge to do so. As it is, I have a banner and a navbar. The navbar is not functional, as I don't yet have a guestbook or information page, and haven't been able to set up a seperate galleries page or slideshow:
I'm confused about the different types of slideshows. I am looking for a smooth, clean looking one, with no viewer controls, and a nice frame around the outside. I don't want it in the bio box, since then it has the border from the theme. My favorite slideshow is andy's (moon river photography). It looks very professional and has a clean, simple look. I've attempted to make slideshows, and have had problems with centering it, and setting the speed. Please tell me the code I need to make a nice slideshow on my homepage with a border. Next, when I first tried Ivar's tutorial on a header, navbar, and slideshow, I couldn't get the seperate galleries page to work. The galleries page would have the same slideshow as my homepage, and I don't know how to get it to have all my galleries, with just the slideshow on my homepage.

Additionally, please help me make my webpage look aesthetically presentable. I like how my header has turned out, and any tips on colors that would help make any aspect of my site better would be of great help.

Thanks again for helping me with all of this.

I'm sorry for being so persistent, I understand that you probably all have better things to do. If you have time, please give me advice on my website: http://machlinimaging.smugmug.com Let's start with the galleries page.

Add this to your javascript

function hasPath(sPath)
{
re = new RegExp("\/" + sPath + "(\/|$)");
return re.test(window.location)
}

Add this to the top of your footer code.

<script>
if (hasPath("galleries"))
YD.addClass(document.body, "galleries");
</script>

Add this to your CSS.

.homepage #galleriesBox,
.homepage #categoriesBox,
.homepage #featuredBox {
display: none;
}

.galleries #bioBox {
display: none;
}

.galleries #galleriesBox,
.galleries #categoriesBox,
.galleries #featuredBox {
display: block;
}

Your galleries link in your navbar should now work.

Next we'll get the slideshow.

Thanks Allen. Could you also help me with my slideshow? I've tryed two different types, but I don't know what type of slideshow I want. I'm looking for something pretty simple, that I could make fill up most of the screen on my homepage, and I also want a nice border around it. Finally, when I tried a slideshow last time, I couldn't get it to center.

Thanks,

Got a little side tracked.:D Noticed your guestbook and thought you'd
like a little enhancement.

Replace the album description with this.

<html>
<div id="galDescImg">
<img src="/photos/214867699-S.jpg" width="400" height="300">
</div>

<div id="galDescText">
I hope you've enjoyed browsing my website. Check back often
to see if I've uploaded new photos. Feel free to leave a
comment below.
<p>
</div>
</html>

Add this to your CSS.

/* start guessbook */
.gallery_3739514 #galDescImg {
position: relative;
height: 300px;
width: 400px;
top: 20px;
left: 30px;
border:4px ridge #ccc;
}

.gallery_3739514 #galDescText {
position: relative;
font-size: 1.5em;
font-family: Comic Sans MS, verdana, tahoma;
color: #ccc;
width: 240px;
top: -290px;
left: 470px;
}

/* set the height to push the footer down */
.gallery_3739514 #albumDescription {
background: #00015E;
height: 350px;
}

/* remove stuff for clean page look */
.gallery_3739514 .journal_entry {display:none;}
.gallery_3739514 #albumNav_top {display: none;}
.gallery_3739514 #albumNav_bottom {display: none;}
/* end guessbook */

This was done in Firefox so other browsers might need slight tweaking.

Thanks for all this help Allen. Finally, I have a few other questions. I'd like to make about me and services pages, but with only text. Is it possible to do so? Also, I still need help creating a slideshow. I'd like one on my homepage with a border, no user controls, and no smugmug symbol at startup, that could fill up the entire page, other than the header.

Other than that, is there anything you suggest I change or add to my page? I'd like it to appear as professional and clean as possible.

you like with html and CSS. Create the galleries and add the text to the
gallery description. Once the text is there it will be a simple matter of
formating.

See the wiki here (http://smugmug.jot.com/WikiHome/FlashSlideShow), all the things you want can be done. Start by adding it
and then we'll look at changing/not showing things. It will give us something
to work with.

I just added a about me page, and am going to do the same for a services page. (just text) However, the page has no header or navbar, and still says "This gallery has no photos". How do I change all that?
Next, I want to set up my header so it is a link to my homepage. Can that be done? Finally, I want to remove the galleries and subcategories titles on a page. For example, if a category has galleries directly inside it, and also has subcategories (1 step further down of categorization), I don't want them seperated, except for the subcategory link to bring the user to more galleries. ex Category 1 has Gallery 1 and Subcategory 1 in it, subcategory 1 has galleries 2/3 in it, I want gallery 1 and subcategory 1 to not be differentiated on category 1's page. Thanks.

You CSS is not active and the link in the address bar is genetic.
Under customize gallery make sure "hide owner" is not checked and
appearance is set to "custom".

Next, I want to set up my header so it is a link to my homepage. Can that be done? .... Here's some generic code. It creates a clickable banner on your pages.
Plug in your numbers and see if this works.

The header code (not head tag box) Clickable banner.

<div id="my_banner">
<a href="http://nickname.smugmug.com">
<img src="/img/spacer.gif" height="100" width="750" border="0" alt="">
</a></div>

Supporting CSS to define image and format banner

#my_banner {
width: 750px;
height: 100px;
margin: 0 auto;
background: url(/photos/xxxxxxxx-O.png) no-repeat;
_background: none;
_filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader (enabled=true, sizingmethod=image, src='/photos/xxxxxxxx-O.png');
}

Make the spacer gif in the header html the same size as your banner, it's the clickable area.

Thanks for all this help. I'd be so lost without helpful people like you. After changing my About Me page, I noticed that there is a white text box over the text. I don't think I changed anything by accident, so I'm not sure what caused the color change. Also, in my About Me and Guestbook pages, the top of the first box on the page is closer to the navbar than on the other pages. I'd like all pages to be the same, but have only about 1/2 of the amount of space that is between the navbar and bio box on my homepage.

You have two of these. Remove red one. The second one overrides the first one anyway.

#navcontainer ul li a {
text-decoration: none;
padding: .1em 0em;
color: #ffffff;
background-color: #000000;
}

#navcontainer ul li a {
text-decoration: none;
padding: .2em 1em;
color: #000000;
background-color: #ffffff;
font-family: Arial, Veranda;
font-size: 170%;
}

Couple extra }'s, see red, at bottom of CSS, remove them.

.gallery_3764499 #albumNav_bottom {display: none;}
}

#subcategoriesBox,
#category {border: none !important;}
#galleryTitle,
#subCatGalleryTitle {display: none;}
}

Change this existing one to add some space below navbar.

#navcontainer ul {
margin: 0px auto 20px auto; /* top right bottom left */
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
text-align: center;
}

Edit these to format the text and background.

.gallery_3764499 #myText {
margin: 0 auto;
margin-top: -40px;
width: 600px;
background: none;
color: #ddd;
padding: 0 40px 5px 20px; << remove, not doing anything
}

.gallery_3764499 #myText p {
color: #eee;
font-family: Comic Sans MS, verdana, tahoma;
font-size: 110%;
text-align: justify;
}

Ok, so i added a slideshow on, using the wiki. I still have a lot of things I want to change:
Only have slideshow on homepage
Add a cool, simple border around edge
Have the slideshow automatically resize for different monitors, so that its height, under the header/navbar, fills the screen.
Center the slideshow
Make it go pretty slowly
Remove forward, backward, pause buttons
Remove thumbnails under slideshow
Have an alternate Banner on the homepage

Bump! Please help, I'd really appreciate it. In addition to all those things, I have a few other questions:
I tried my site on a computer w/ IE 6, and couldn't see the header.
On the same computer, with Firefox, I could see the header, but not the slideshow. This is because it doesn't have the flash plugin, right? How can I put in a link that appears over the slideshow (in the future, within the border I want) that brings you to the flash player website?

Here's a start.

Border around slideshow, remove back/forward/pause button, remove thumbs under slideshow - all of these are parameters to the slideshow. You can find the parameters on this wiki page - http://smugmug.jot.com/WikiHome/FlashSlideShow. Scroll down to see them, then add as desired to your slideshow code.

I'm not aware of a way to resize the slideshow based on monitor size, not sure it's possible right now. The only feature I know of that works that way right now is the smugmug style gallery (as long as you have stretchy turned on), details at http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=77553.

To only have the slideshow on the homepage, start with this tutorial - http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/2160039. Scroll down to the sections titled The Galleries. That's where you'll find the CSS to show the slideshow on your homepage only and your galleries on the galleries page only.

Thanks Denise!

Allen: which way did you want me to setup the slideshow, in the bio box or the other way? I'm becoming more confused as I try to setup a slideshow. There are so many different pieces of code to insert, Ivar's tutorial (header, slideshow, galleries page) says to change some of the code, others say to add things on to it. I'd really like to know exactly what I should be putting in my customization page. By now, I've probably already managed to mess up some of the other code by all this adding and removing.

Again, here are the things I'd like to change right now:
Only have slideshow on homepage
Add a cool, simple border around edge
Have the slideshow automatically resize for different monitors, so that its height, under the header/navbar, fills the screen. (if possible)
Center the slideshow
Make it go pretty slowly
Remove forward, backward, pause buttons
Remove thumbnails under slideshow
Have an alternate Banner on the homepage
Make all my protected galleries still have gallery images, not just unprotected ones.

Go here (http://smugmug.jot.com/WikiHome/FlashSlideShow) and add the stuff below this. Best to put it in your bio on the homepage.

-OR-

To set this up in place of your SmugMug bio on your home page, place this in your bio:

1st chunk in your bio, 2nd chunk in your javascript and last part in your CSS.

Okay, I added the slideshow. It worked fine, but just disappeared when I tried to add the border thickness/color parameters. How do I fix that? Also, could you please help me with my other questions?:
Have the slideshow automatically resize for different monitors, so that its height, under the header/navbar, fills the screen. (if possible)
Center the slideshow
Make it go pretty slowly
Make all my protected galleries still have gallery images, not just unprotected ones.

Also, I'm wondering if I could entirely change the organization of my site. If possible, here's how I want it:

machlinimaging.smugmug.com=Enter page
On it, I'd like an alternate header, not linking anywhere, that I will create, and my slideshow directly on an all-black background. (the slideshow will just have a thin border) I also want a red enter button under the slideshow. That button will link to my galleries page (the slideshow will not be a link). This page wont have a navbar.

galleries page
This will have my normal header, and the black arts theme (along with all my other pages - about me, guestbook, info if I add it in the future). Since I no longer will want the viewer of the site to have access to my slideshow, I only want the galleries, about me, and guestbook links in my navbar (I will remove the home link if all of this will work). I want the header to link to my galleries page.

I know this is probably very confusing, and difficult, if possible at all. If it can be done, though, I'd really appreciate it.

Notice the red on the first line, it's missing on the next two.

oParams.crossFadeSpeed = '350';
params.borderThickness = '10';
params.borderColor = 'fffff';

Have the slideshow automatically resize for different monitors, so that its height, under the header/navbar, fills the screen. (if possible)
I know of no way to do this.

I also want a red enter button under the slideshow. That button will link to my galleries page (the slideshow will not be a link). This page wont have a navbar.

Add the bold after the script closing tag in your bio. As soon as the show is running
we'll get some CSS to center all this and format the "enter".

On a different question, the alternate header on my homepage isn't the one I want. Are there any formats I can save it to that won't do this, so I can have plain white text on the page?

Im so sorry, but after asking all this about alternate headers, I've decided to keep the header the same for all pages. The one I want for everything is the new one (on my homepage). What should I remove or change for this? I don't want the header to click to the homepage anymore, either. I've also chose to do away with the enter button.
Next, I want to center the slideshow on the homepage. Also, in IE, there is a active control box around the slideshow until you click inside it. Is there any way to remove it?

Other questions:
How to slow down slideshow (about the speed of Andy's maybe a tad bit faster)
How to still show gallery images for protected galleries (on the galleries page)

Thanks a ton,
Michael

EDIT: How do I:
change gallery comments to guestbook comments in my guestbook (I thought I already did this)?

Not sure how to set the show speed, there where some controls with the
thumbs showing.
The show can not draw form passworded galleries at this time I think I read.

Sorry about that, I should've made myself clearer- what I mean is that I want , in the galleries page, a (rotating) image for every gallery, even protected ones. (Right now, it says, protected gallery, with a lock symbol.)

In each gallery pick a photo and under photos tools click "feature photo" and
it will show for that galleries thumb.

Thanks Allen. Now, I'd like to remove the bio box border so that only the blue slideshow border shows (if possible). How do I do that? Next, if there is still all that extra space above and below the slideshow when I remove the border, how can I get rid of that?

Other than this, I think I'm done with customization for now, until I decide I want to change my page. Do you think there are any things I should change, to any part of my site, to make it better, or more professional?

Thanks,
Michael

Add this to your CSS.

#bioBox.box {border: none !important;}

btw, you can not delete the footer, even if this worked.:D

footer {display: none !important;}
