A maelstrom (or malström) is a very powerful whirlpool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whirlpool); a large, swirling body of water. The word was introduced from the Nordic form by Edgar Allan Poe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe) in his story A Descent into the Maelstrom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Descent_into_the_Maelstrom) (1841 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1841)).
