Hi Guys, I've been a SmugMug user for a while, but brand new to the forums. Looks to be a nice community.

I came across this Redtailed Hawk while photographing old textile mill buildings in Lowell, Mass. He was enjoying his lunch and paid no attention to me at all.

I only had my 18-70 lens so I was lucky to be able to get pretty close to him.

Thanks for looking

Hi David,

Amazing shot especially with the lens you were using. I've been seeing hawks for the last two days but haven;t been able to get close enough for a shot with a 300mm and a 1.4 TC.

Thanks guys, I was amazed to see him in that place - right outside the entrance of a museum at the Lowell National Historical Park. A couple of the rangers came by and said they had never seen him around before. I was just thrilled to have my camera with me.

It was a treat to be so close. He did check me out for just a moment, I hoped he didn't want my eyes for desert!

My wife didn't like the look of his lunch, so I cropped it out for this one.

Fooled ya! I already replied and made no reference to Andy's eating habits. Now that I'm on the mod squad I'm trying to elevate my replies and avoid gratuitous remarks. Besides if I compared the poor hawk's eating habits to Andy's , hawk lovers from around the country would descend upon my house to protest. :smile6

Thank you for all your kind comments folks. I assure you that my nature pictures are not usually this good, I was just super lucky that day.

Today, my daughter and I went to Plum Island in search of birds and didn't get a single shot. The only interesting bird we saw was a Snowy Owl that was just a spec in a telescope. Just shows, the best things are often unplanned.

We did see a seal, a long way from the sea. Too far away to photograph with my 300 mm lens. He was in an area that was closed and I soooo wanted to go over there to get in range.

Been looking over the posts here, you guys do nice work :thumb

always good to see a bit of blood and guts going down a raptors throat-
doing what they have evolved to do-nice capture
