time for a house call.
I posted on this issue a while back (see sequence of posts starting back here (http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=682357&postcount=2403)) and had to go to the apple forums to get sorted out (go here (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5939591#5939591) if you want to have a look). I'll fix you up :thumb
So Doc. Is it faster? Or do they just look better now? Or both?

Hello oh wizards
So here is the situation. I have a MacBook Pro. Wife has a iMac 21". Have a Airport Extreme Base Station. We are both running Leopard. Wife's iMac is connected wirelessly, my MacBook on occasion. Have a powered DLink USB2.0 Hub connecting HP Printer and a Iomega 1/2Terrabyte Drive.
So I wanted to copy stuff to the Hard Drive. Like all my photo files, about 30GB at the moment. So I figure go to Servers under the Leopard Finder Panel, then go to Office, then go to the Iomega HHD. Then start copying folders over. Right?
No good. It would not connect. So I tried doing it wired. Nope, still can't connect. Go over to Wife's machine. She can connect no problem. Huh :scratch ?
So I figure reboot MacBook. No change. Reboot Airport, I can connect. But I cannot seem to copy all the stuff. I get an error saying "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code - 1407)" I am not sure what an expected error is except in baseball... but this error or a similiar one keeps popping up and I cannot copy the stuff over succesfully.
So that is problem 1, any idea why it is being so finicky?
Problem 2
So then I disconnected the drive from the Airport. Yes, I disconnected the users first and followed the basic rules. Then I hooked it up via Firewire 800 to my MacBook Pro directly. I then double clicked the folder I wanted to copy to, the message was "The folder 'Photos' could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." Huh? Again?
So what am I missing?

Put the drive back on the LAN. From your wife's computer Get Info on the drive, and under permissions select "Ignore Ownership on this Volume."
See if that helps. :thumb

Or both?dunno about speed, it was never really slow (or maybe i thought it was because it "appeared" to be loading a thumb), but yeah, all my images look great in coverflow. probably is faster since I've stripped off the useless embedded preview images with CTX

Ummm I could not find the permissions section with those options. I saw permissions but not those.
A few captures...

Maybe I am not looking in the right place, but can I run a pair of 27" monitors on a "standard" Mac Pro?
The tech specs page for the standard configuration says "NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI and dual-link DVI)." That means you get two video ports: a single-link DVI port that can drive up to 1920 by 1200 pixels, and a dual-link DVI port that can drive up to 2560 by 1600 pixels.
27" monitors come in a variety of resolutions. As long as your 27" monitors do not exceed the pixel dimensions listed above, you can plug them in right away. The dual-link DVI port is mostly intended to support the Apple 30" Cinema Display, but can drive anything smaller.

btw, random contribution to this thread: installed Leopard last night on the old Powerbook G4. It was a clean install, as it was actually starting to act up (it would forget what time it was everytime it was shut off, lose all network info, and more), everything went very smoothly and all is well now, I swear it even runs a bit faster. All told, even with full wipe of the drive, it only took about 1 hour.

A pair of 1920x1200 Dell 2707's? How would I total the pixels between the 2, I know it works on a pair of 204B's they are 1600x1200 each and it works fine.
I am going back and forth now, either a pair of 24's, a pair of 27's, or that single 30". Probably a Dell 3007 HC if I do the 30" Monitor....

Gus,
Anyone with a bit of Mac smarts can reset the password on your computer. They just need access to your computer and the install disk.
If you want true, unbreakable passworded security, then you would use FileVault. This is hard-core encryption. What you use is decrypted as you use it. Lose your password, and you are totally screwed. No way in. Not that I know of. It's skeery secure.
If you want to keep the odd bit of info secure (ID numbers, bank account info, etc.) use Keychain Access. You have a Keychain by virtue of the fact that you have a user account. You can add secure notes to it. When you go into Keychain Access and try to read a note you will be prompted to enter your Keychain Password. This is another level of security for that type of info that you want to safeguard.

I just remembered how one might accidentally remove a button. Command-drag will rearrange or tear off toolbar items, just like on the menu bar. if you meant to Command-drag a file but landed on the toolbar, a button might go bye-bye. Inexplicably there is no undo for this. Maybe in Leopard?

RogerThat bugged me in CS2, but CS3 it's easy to overcome. Just hit the f key to switch through the options that are available to you. Also try hitting the tab key and once you see what you can do with that hold the shift key and hit tab. Then for the menus on the right look up in the top right corner for arrows and hover over them to find the "collapse to icons" (or "expand dock" depending on how it's currently set). What else. The new menu system is freakin' awesome IMHO.

Actually, just to set the record straight, right-click support has been in Mac OS since the mid-1990s at least. When Apple bought NeXT to create Mac OS X, NeXT OS already supported right-click. I've been using Macs with two-button mice for as long as I've been able, which might have been Mac OS 8 or 9.
Popular Mac applications like the Adobe, former Macromedia, and Microsoft Office suites have included extensive right-click menus on the Mac for many years.
Only some myopic Mac users are allergic to right mouse buttons. And I think they've been missing out.

The single button mouse was fine in 1984. Software was a lot smaller and simpler, so there were many fewer options to contend with at any given time. But software has metastasized. I can't imagine ever using a single button mouse again, though. Combination mouse and keyboard clicks detract from the convenience of both keyboards and mice.
OK, David, I'll go away...but I'll probably be back. :wave

I don't have any issues w/ the single click since I'm glued to the keyboard for shortcuts anyway.
Does apple have an answer to holding onto the single click mouse though? It seems like there would be a pretty big outcry for a right click mouse on any stock machine if it wasn't available.

The little scrolly ball? Just turn it off/unplug it and run it on your jeans (upside down) a few times. Fixes it for me everytime. There are more complicated methods of cleaning the ball I could link you to if you want. The thing is genius for me, since I do so much horizontal scrolling in Final Cut Pro. But I do understand why some would not like it.

The OS has had support for multis for much longer, as CB pointed out. So they didn't make them...big deal. Really. My wife would not know what to do with it. There are plenty of users who don't want and don't understand 2 button mice, and for them it would not be a feature. It's hard for y'all to understand, but it's true, and I think it's most likely the reason why Jobs took so long to approve a multi. Because this one is a single-button mouse until you configure it to be a multi. So it's a user based decision.

So I got to spend two hours on the phone with Apple tonight and it is still not quite working but I learned a few things:
1) GUID format is better for harddrives connected to Airports. (I wish that was in the documentation cause now I have to backup the drive to reformat it to help it would help)
2) Things never break when you are on the phone with Tech Support
3) Having two computers attached to drives hanging off the Airport seems to confuse my Airport
4) Creating a dummy user profile seemed to help :scratch :dunno Not using it, just creating it.
5) Never dress the wires until everything is working :cry
Anyone else using Leopard to connect two computers to a USB drive hanging off a Airport Extreme?

After 20+ years in the IT sector, I still find this a "religious" argument that will never be settled..mac vs pc...and lately..Nikons/canons/Pentax seems to fall in the same category...
Like beta and VHS (remember those) the market did decide..beta was better but lost due to many reasons..
For computers ...Business Week stated in '06 - "But Apple has just 5% of the $75 billion home PC market " ...that has been steady give or take a few points for a long time...
As a consumer...I try to avoid proprietary systems or buying orphans…so I not only look at the box..which is really secondary, but what programs I want to run on it…if you were a developer, which market would be your first choice ? ...and lastly the cost because there really is no inherent value in technology...as soon as you buy, you find it less expensive immediately or something better has come out...
The days of the mac being the clear winner in the desktop publishing market or processing market and the pc being the "business machine" are really over however, I think the mac still has a clear advantage in the music scene...
Just my thoughts :)

Hi Andrew.
I had a .mac account for about a year. I decided not to renew. But only because
the services that are of interest to most people are of no interest to me.
I don't need backups and I don't really need the e-mail and up until recently,
I didn't need the 1:1 dealio that keeps all of your macs in sync with one another.

Actually, I don't understand your question. Why would you need .Mac to get involved in your custom domain email? Why not just configure Mail.app to get that mail? What is it that you're trying to accomplish?
And lastly, seeing as how I don't really understand your problem, I'm not really sure if this (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1288484&tstart=0) is the answer you're looking for. :D

Mac's are great machines, I'm not debating that. But it sounds like your basing your assessment on opinions of your mentors. I'm more interested in data showing the reasons for your comments. :ear
I can think of a couple of historical reasons that help explain the predominance of Macs among photographers.
In the bad ol' days, Apple did a much better job of making sure that the color of printed output matched the color on the screen. In large part, this was because Apple controlled all of the hardware then, printers and monitors as well as the CPU, whereas anarchy reigned in the PC world.
The other key point is that Photoshop was originally developed on Macs for Mac only. PC versions were not even available until four years later, and for a number of years after that, development was still done on Macs, then ported to PCs. As a result, PC versions always lagged behind the Mac, much as Mac versions of the Microsoft Office suite lag behind Windows today. Nobody likes to wait for the latest and greatest.
This gave Apple a tremendous head start among photographers. Since Macs have always been more user friendly than Windows--and switching platforms has a cost--there was never any reason for the early users of Photoshop to switch once the Windows versions reached parity with the Macs. By then, it was too late for Windows: everyone knew that photographers used Macs, so newbie photographers naturally gravitated to Apple. It became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I have a family web site (gorohoff.com) that I set up years and years ago with a hosting company that was affordable at the time. Over the years the hosting company has become (relatively speaking) very unaffordable, and I've been too lazy to move my site. My site is just simple HTML web site, but the hosting company also hosts my email addresses (which members of my family are using for there personal email).
I really need to move my family web site to a new less expensive hosting better solution, and I thought I could do that and add some other cool features by moving it all to .mac. I need want to preserve the domain name and keep everyones email addresses. I suppose I could just find a third party to do email hosting for me and get .mac for the web hosting.

I haven't done a lot of heavy searching on the Apple support forums, however I did search all over Apple's help and .mac's help. Couldn't find my answer. Apple's help seem to all be limited to the most basic sort of technical questions.
Thinking back over the past year, I think I've gotten my best mac support from dgrin. :D But it was dgrin members that did a lot to convinced me to make the switch to mac.
I guess its time to start posting questions to Apple's forums.

Okay, so I did the same search as you suggested and got the same results. Mine were a little different with airport extreme, but same no solution.
By tweaks, I probably should have said installing all the applications. Adobe Creative Suite 3, Lightroom, Office, VMWare Fusion, Boot Camp... etc. It is more about getting all the applications working and authorized again since the Creative Suite was an upgrade from Windows.
The way I did the hardware process was as follows:
Purchased Wife an iMac in May - connected perfectly well to Linksys infrastructure.
July wife purchased me a MacBookPro - also got Airport Extreme to get N speed as well as share drive and USB printers. Hooked up small (60GB) Western Digital Drive. All worked fine once put in a powered USB 2.0 hub. This was running Tiger.
October did the upgrade to Leopard to do BootCamp mainly. Stuff started acting a little quirkly. I thought it was due to the fact that the Western Digital Drive is USB powered.
November I purchased an Iomega UltraMax 500GB drive from the Apple store. Figure it comes preformatted and has seperate power supply.
December started calling Apple for support. They recommended I reformat the drive in GUID format, so I backed up everything and tried that. No change. They then recommend I create a different user and make sure that works. Well it doesn't always work under that user so it does not look like it a user issue.
The part that really has me puzzled :scratch it works fine on my wife's iMac. If I logoff and logon I can get the drive for a few minutes but then it can go out in the weeds and I cannot get the drive back. In addition I cannot to the drive via IP address either. But it works fine from the wife's iMac running Leopard as well.:bash
I can also connect to it from a desktop Windows machine.
I have called Apple support two times now with still no resolution. It is limited to my MacBookPro.

Interesting, as I find that Leopard is MUCH more reliable for network stuff, although I haven't done exactly as you've done.
How did you do the Leopard upgrade? The safest way is to do an archive and install. It saves all your apps, docs and network settings, but replaces every bit of the system. It leaves the old system on there, in case there are things you need from it, and labels it "Previous System". Anyway, for future reference, that's the best way to upgrade.
Anyway, it sure looks like you're not alone in this, from what I've read. You could check this out (http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070814114528854).

Mac OS X 10.5.x Special Report: AirPort Disk problems
Leopard's support for AirPort Disks (a USB disk connected, and accessed through, an AirPort Base Station, as a way of sharing a hard disk between multiple computers, often including Windows machines) is not all that it might be. The AirPort Disk Utility is gone, and Apple has a note saying they expect you to connect directly from the Shared section of the sidebar. But readers are reporting a variety of consistent symptoms, suggesting that this is not working correctly.
Wrong share One variety of problem is that the wrong share is being seen. From one reader:
After upgrade to Leopard, the airport disk shows up in the sidebar but I can only access the shares, even though it shows I'm connected as a privileged user.
Another:
On my Airport Extreme (Gigabit) model I have no guests allowed and security by user name. My wife and I have read/write access and kids are read-only. What this normally means is that when you login/mount the Airport Extreme disk you see multiple volumes (the kids are on Windows so this still works). They see the main (read-only share) and a personal read/write share. On my MacBook Pro I used Apple's Backup to backup my data to that personal share. With Leopard, however, I only see the main share, not my personal one.
Another:
I upgraded to Leopard the other night and when i first log into my user account it will recognize the usb shared drive and i can access it but if I put the computer to sleep and wake it up it will recognize that i have a shared drive but it logs me in as a guest and then says that it is not connected. i have to restart Airport just to both recognize the disk and allow me to access it.
Wake from sleep issues That last note raises a second variety of problem: after sleep, connectivity is altered or lost:
When I boot my mac (I've a macbook first generation), the AirPort disk is perfectly recognised, but when the mac goes to sleep status, after wake up, the disk isn't recognised. Although the other pc with linux can see it perfectly, my mac connect to the airport disk as guest (but in the airport disk configuration, I don't permit connections as guests). Only way for the correct connection with my user is to restart the airport base, not the mac.
Another:
If the airport extreme box is freshly restarted the airport disc can be mounted and seems to work OK. But after my PB wakes from sleep the connection is lost and nothing short of rebooting the airport express seems to work. Other computers on the network with file sharing enabled seem to work OK.
Not working at all In the worst case, the ability to connect simply goes away:
My AirPort disk was working since I (clean) installed Leopard on my Mac Pro until two days ago. All of a sudden, my AirPort disk just unmounted itself. Trying to remount it gave me errors, even when I try the "Connect to Server..." option in the Finder Go Menu.
Solutions? Solutions are hard to come by.
One reader suggests using CIFS instead of Bonjour to access the AirPort Disk (essentially pretending that you are a Windows machine?).
Another reader suggests using the AirPort Disk Utility from Tiger, but it is not clear that this ultimately improves connectivity.
The Time Machine connection It may be relevant to note that AirPort disks don't work with Time Machine. This was a promised feature, but it was subtracted from Leopard at the last minute, apparently because of reliability issues. Generalizing, we may conjecture that Leopard was released with known AirPort disk connection reliability issues.
Conclusion The automatic discovery of File Sharing computers in the Finder sidebar, and the ease of connection with those computers, along with the ability to designate shared folders at last, is a major Leopard boon; but it would appear that the attempt to integrate AirPort disk connection with the same interface is not working properly.

Thanks for the link. I did the upgrade already, still no change. In terms of the Leopard upgrade I was not experienced enough to know how to do an archive and install. Now I know for next time.
The current work around is to log off, log on with the dummy user, connect to the drive, log off, log on with my real account, connect to the drive and do my stuff first. If it is a small amount of files, I just put them on a thumbdrive and walk down and use the wife's iMac. It is not insurmountable it is just plain disappointing.
But on the plus side, I am learning stuff and I did get a new camera for Free Loot Day so I now have something to file the drive up with :):barb

You could try booting up in safemode, see if that helps. That will start up with only essential OS stuff loaded, none of the other stuff that your apps need. You can't really work in it, but it would be interesting to see if it works better. You hold the shift key after the start-up chime to invoke safemode.

Yea, I am getting pretty close. What has me thinking though that it is an airport problem is that today it kicked the wife out also. I am beginning to think that the better answer might be to just hook the drives up to a desktop machine and share them. So I went to see if one can share a volume (http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/sharing/) and it doesn't look like it.
Anyone know if it can be done? The Google search resulted in Server solutions.

Yeah, you can share. You would have to sign in as a user to the computer that has access to the drives, though, I think. Or maybe as a guest would work for accessing the drive. But you can do it. I don't do exactly what you do, so I'm not really sure what kind of behavior (aside from it working) that you're expecting.

Wow! I do (did) that all time with 3 Macs and 3 PCs running both XP Home and XP Pro. Yeah, you have to setup shares, and kill that Windows firewall, but it worked. Moved gigs of images back and forth, including to attached external drives. It was weird enough with XP and no server, but Vista is worse? One more reason to add to why I'm glad I moved to a MacBook Pro. :clap

I want to share Mac to Mac. For sharing to Windows machines there are thumb drives and USB hard drives and DVD...
However using Vista at the office for some stuff, it is a little challenging at times. I would not say it downright sucks, you just have to know specifically what to tell it. The change between Windows at the office and Mac at home has shown me that both (and probably any) Operating System has its flaws. But when one really sits and thinks about all the different permutations of Windows/PC hardware out there that Windows can support and how it hits 80% of the market pretty darn well it is amazing to think about.
is it perfect? Nope, is Mac perfect, nope. It is just deciding what is the right tool for you as the user.

Go to your Hard disk, in Library, receipts, there should be a package with Safari that works for your system.
If not, if you have your original system disks, you should be able to find the installer package for Safari on that one too.
If you have a mac account, try the iDisk and see under software if you find Safari there...
I think it is telling you that the original software package of Safari is not there. So it keep saying that you need Safari first in order to install this update. Which is not a full application, only an update. I am looking if I can find you a package to install safari

Why would you want that when you're running Leopard?
First, I think it must be there. What are the chances that you unknowingly threw away an application? Did you do a lot of throwing away in your applications folder? Have you searched for it with Spotlight?

will a calibrator like a Huey work on a MacBookPro monitor?Yes. But be careful when moving your laptop around. If you go from a dark room to outside and don't have the ambient light sensor to make adjustments. Your display will "think" it's still dark and be adjusted accordingly.
To fix this, just connect your sensor and let it take an ambient light reading. It should do all the heavy lifting for you.
How in gods name do i find out whats running on this thing :scratch (new imac that is)
Something is severly slowing it down & i mean between 3 to 5 mins just to save a 3 meg jpeg to desktop from CS3. The colour wheel just sits there spinning & it eventually sorts it chews it.
I have nothing open but sometimes i have bridge but it is doing it with just CS3 open :dunno

Try Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities). I also have two command-line aliases I pull off the bench for these kinds of thing: qtop and mtop. qtop shows the process using the most CPU (but doesn't poll; just a quick snapshot). mtop does the same but with memory instead of CPU.
qtop:
ps -x -a -c -r -o pcpu,pid,command | head
mtop:
ps -x -a -c -m -o %mem,rss,pid,command | head
Look at your free memory, too. If you're running low, restart the app that's using the most. That's usually Safari, after it's been running for a while. :dunno

In your applications folder, go to utilities and then hit the top app, which should be activity monitor. When you look for all processes, it will show you which apps are open, and which ones are big memory eaters.
If you have time machine activated, it slows down photoshop when it is making a backup...
You can find the specs of your imac when you click in the left upper corner, the apple, about my mac. It should tell you what computer you have, what system is on it, and what the memory specs are.
Another reason for slowing down a computer can be that the harddisk is too full, but since you say it is a new computer, I think we can rule that one out.
It is also good to now and then in the same utilities folder go to disk utility, and hit the repair permissions button, and restart after that. That takes care of slowing down faults.

So how do you explain Gus's issues?
Adobe's FAQ's and press releases all have said that there are known compatibility issues that are being worked on. So to just dismiss it since you are one of the lucky to not have issues doesn't solve gus's problem.
The following is just a 30 second Google research job. I bet I could find allot more if I dug it up. This isn't a Mac/PC thing Andy. I'm just trying to help out and get to the bottom of Gus's problem by providing my meager input.
Acrobat 8 Professional
update scheduled for January 2008.
Photoshop Elements 4 and earlier
"Likely to encounter issues for which there is no resolution."
Creative Suite 2 and earlier
"While older Adobe applications may install and run on Mac OS X Leopard, they were designed, tested, and released to the public several years before this new operating system became available. You may, therefore, experience a variety of installation, stability, and reliability issues for which there is no resolution. Older versions of our creative software will not be updated to support Mac OS X Leopard."
Photoshop Lightroom Adobe has now released Lightroom 1.3 (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3810) for Leopard compatibility. Versions 1.2 and earlier are not compatible.
Happy new years!

My daughter is trying to use the internal microphone and the isight on a white imac 24 to record a video. When she uses imovie HD to play it back, the audio contains a high frequency and pitch 'beep beep beep' for the length of the track, but you can still hear the underlying audio. You can also hear it while you are recording, but it is not as loud.
I tried to replicate the problem using a macbook merely 10 feet away, but couldn't.
Interestingly, she says that she used garageband to record some audio and there was no beeping.

It's imovie hd.
So after much frustration and tinkering, it seems as if the beeping is coming from within the body of the imac. You cannot hear it normally, but the internal mic sure does. I have to wind the input vol down and crank up the noise reduction in editing to remove it. :cry

Hey Gus,
I've been following this thread and am curious about what's causing your problem. Your machine is powerful enough that you shouldn't have hangs unless something is pushing it to its limits. Have you noticed any pattern to what you are doing in CS3 when the problem occurs? Also, do you regularly receive large attachments in email?
Question for Mac experts: Does OS-X do background file indexing from time to time? My parents' OS-9 iMac comes to a crawl whenever that kicks in, though IIRC, it does show a dialog that lets you cancel it. :scratch
Tks richard...no i dont get any emails really. Im not into it.
The machine crashes daily..sometimes 3 times a day...it hangs in just normal use & then crashes & wants to report home to mum with what ever is wrong with it so dont anyone tell me macs dont crash. My old XP clanker beside has a better track record than this thing. This is a clean new machine with up to date software...not some refurb job either. At least the mac recovers from the crash much faster than my PC.
As for the Photoshop 'hanging' , nothing else is running. At the most i may have one or 2 web pages open. No pattern just usually always with saving a normal sized jpeg (about 2-4 meg) from PS to pictures.

There is something wrong. This is not expected or normal behavior. May not help you much, that statement, but you absolutely should not be having these problems. It's just not normal. Ask Doc to go over your system. He should know what to do.
Those crashes are not the Mac crashing, but the application. There's a difference. The Mac is still up and running fine, just not the application. For the Mac to crash, that's a kernel panic, and is pretty darn rare. Also, KPs are almost always hardware related.
So, which apps are crashing? Is it always PS, or are there others? If it's always PS, then there's an issue with your application install, or your preference files, or something along those lines.

Yes, there are some cron jobs that fire off nightly at between 2 and 4 am localtime, or abotu 10 to 15 minutes after you boot up if they haven't run yet today. They'll grind the disk pretty hard, but that's about it. They're also niced down almost as low as they can go by default, so everything else on the box should have a higher run priority. I've had them kick off during a big recompile and they barely dent the recompile time... doing little bits in the background as they can until the compile is done, then coming out to play and finishing their work while I'm testing the fix and/or swearing at the build logs.

In OS 9, I think there was a Find by Content Indexing feature that showed those symptoms and had a cancel button. It can't be cron jobs, because OS 9 doesn't have them, only OS X. You might look around for Find by Content Indexing preference. I can't remember how it worked.
OS X has Spotlight, but that is completely different than the OS 9 indexing. Spotlight may churn if you mount a new volume full of files and it hasn't been indexed, but it shouldn't just happen otherwise and there is no cancel button.

in the corporate environment, patents are dirt simple to apply for. Most companies have it down to a formula, with staff, legal and otherwise to make it effortless for the technical staff to file any idea, crazy or otherwise as a patent. The cost is tiny compared to the potential revenue, or better yet, legal leverage.

I had been happily using my Canon Elura 100 with my FW400 port up until I upgraded to Leopard. The FW400 port is home to my Lacie 250GB FW 400 external drive and prior to upgrading to Leopard I had no problem sharing the port when I needed to transfer video form my camera. Now that I have upgraded to Leopard the port recognized the external HD but not the camera. I tried uninstalling all cables and rebooting...to no avail. I tried daisy chaining the camera by using the extra FW400 port on the back of the Lacie...again to no avail. I am extremely disappointed as it should "just work".
I also tried using all the different USB 2.0 ports. I checked the camera in the System Profiler and it appears when plugged in....it's just that iMovie won't recognize. In order to further troubleshoot I connected my wifes Canon SD450 digital point and shoot to see if I could transfer a small video file from it...although the camera appears on the desktop when connnected I am unable to import the video using iMovie....this is really beginning to frustrate me as it should simply work.
I was able to connect the Elura 100 using my FW400 cable to a friends iMac running Leopard natively.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's the one thing my MacBook is lacking (besides a Quicken solution). When I hook up all the cables to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc., it's not the prettiest thing. However, the docking station shown is not really what I would be wanting anyway.
I'm not sure why Apple did not create a docking station. They do everything else so well, it's a bit surprising they've never created one. I'm sure a lot of MacBook users use external monitors, keyboards and mouse. Then again, maybe not.

For a season or two, you could see Apple's original docking station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerBook_Duo#Docking_stations) sitting in the background on Jerry Seinfeld's desk at home. Later the Mac on Jerry's desk got updated, as it often did on that show. You can play "Identify Jerry's Mac" when watching the reruns; the model in the background a good way to figure out the season of the episode you're watching.

Yup I understand the concern. I took your approach for a while then at work I was able to get a second monitor. Having two monitors that are the same size and resolution and in the same plane became much more fluid to work with. It started to turn into one big monitor (kind of like the huge cinema displays)

It's built in to OSX. Plug the USB cable in, and your System Prefs automagically change to give you control of shutdown of the APC!!!!

Guys...whats really driving me absolutely bloody crazy with this computer is that i cant do a full screen flick through of a folder full of photos.
On my PC it was just a matter of opening a photo with xp via a 'right click' & then there was a fwd & reverse arrow at the bottom of the page. man it was just easy.
Now the only way i can have similar is with that 'flick though book' style in which the photos are so pixilated that they are impossible to view.
I was at a mac shop the other day & there was some mac boffin with his pants down telling me that it was my fault that they were pixilated as the files were simply too small....well they are 2 to 4 meg ! (i can see the flamin' size written there & i have just done the save from CS3 at that bloody size so i know that they are not too small. He wouldnt believe me.
Any ideas ?? You cant tell me apple have neglected this...there must be an easy way to see my photos full screen ...one at a time with a click of the mouse.

I'm sure there's a way to do it, and someone will let you know soon, but in the meantime, why not just open the folder in Bridge and use a small thumbs panel and a large preview panel? Or just select all, and hit Cmd-L for a slideshow. I loathed Bridge in CS2, but it is working great for me in CS3 on my new machine.

Tks richard...i didnt think of using bridge. I actually love bridge in CS2/3. Yeah there has to be a way to do it other than that you would think.

Any ideas ??Have you checked whether Preview will do the job for you?
If you have it set up in your dock and then just select and throw all the images of interest at it, you can then conveniently browse through them in sequence or selectively as you wish. :wink

Tks mate but i shouldnt have to throw images into a file that i want to see. I should be able to just open any file at random with my large jpegs in it & flick through them at full (or half) screen size. :scratch

Any ideas ?? You cant tell me apple have neglected this...there must be an easy way to see my photos full screen ...one at a time with a click of the mouse. This is CS3's fault, not Apple. You'll need 2 things:
1) turn off the default icon/thumbnail creation in CS3
Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling... there under "File Saving Options" uncheck "Icon" for sure, I have them all unchecked, and I don't remember what default is, but I know the Icon is what gives you the crap pixelated view in Coverflow.
2) to fix the ones that are already pixelated, you have to strip off the icons. Go get CocoThumbX (CTX), here (http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocothumbx/).
Mate, you asked this once already, did you try the fix and it didn't work? If so, let me know, something else is up.
history...
First asked here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?p=682357#post682357) (me).
Then you asked here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?p=702323#post702323).
I give you a link to the Apple forums here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?p=702457#post702457), where it's explained very well, and CTX is praised by many folks for fixing the issue.

By 'open any file ...' do you mean 'open any folder ..."?
I'm not suggesting the experience would be precisely the same as you have been accustomed to on the dark side, but if you drag any folder of JPEGs to the Preview app (whether in the dock or otherwise) the images in the folder are all immediately available to browse in a window as large as you wish - allowing you to go forward and back to your heart's content.

What im talking about is if i create a folder from CS2 in xp on my PC....i save large jpegs to it > right click > open a photo > then there are arrows at the bottom of the page to move to the next one or go back.
I was wanting leopard to have a similar ability to simply allow me to open a folder with say 50 x 3-4 meg photos in it & open them to view each one at a good screen resolution. i mean they are big files. The files are a set size so the platform should automatically have the ability to open them correctly without killing a chicken on the 3rd moon of a leap year.

Then you would advance from image to image in much the same way.
And you're not limited to JPEGs - RAW images are handled the same way, as the Mac doesn't care what they are.

Preview is in your applications folder.
If you do what Doc suggests you'll fix the problem that PS made, and you'll be able to preview simply by selecting the image in the finder and hitting the spacebar, then using the arrows to navigate. It's called Quicklook, and it's awesome. :thumb

There has to be another way & i will find it or do a lot worse than sam.
