I actually think that Mike is saying it will work. Do you have other computers hooked up?
We have the wireless router through the PC desktop, and it feeds my mac and 2 laptops as well.
The iMac hs a whole wack of ports on the back - headphone, mivrophone, 3 usb, 2 that I haven't figured out, one for a network cable, and one for plugging in a second monitor. Plus 2 more usb on the keyboard.
ann
No you got it i think. So the D-link wireless ethernet USB devise that i have wont work on the Mac your saying & to have the Mac with wireless i need to shell out $250 clams...correct ?
nonono... I'm saying that the mac will have built in networking which means you won't need that dlink device. But if you're keen to go wireless (not required) you can do that with a wirless router too. But you don't have to, you can just plug in your router to your mac with an ethernet cable (10 base T).
no no no non on nopno non nopno nn onononnonon
I need wireless, i want wireless...i have a wireless router...i have one PC currently running wireless on it and one plugged into the router.
Can i use a generic USB ethernet card such as the D-link (i have 2 of them)on the imac or do i have to shell out for the airport named one ?

Gus,
Your link isn't working for me, but I'm going to assume that you're asking about this (http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html) Mac, which has WiFi and Bluetooth built in, so it should work out of the box with your wireless router, no problem.

The iMac has the wireless card built in - it will pick up the signal from your existing router. No $ necessary!

Got it tks guys.
I think all macs can come with WiFi gus.
My Mac Mini is set up to access my network wirelessly via my DLINK router with WiFi -- as are my laptops.
What is really cool, is a network printer that is wifi enabled. Then you can print from any computer on your network to the printer. ANd the printer does not have any wires except a 110 volt power plug.
Gus, is the voltage and CPS 11V 60cycles in Australia, or is your home electric power different than in the US?

Not the MacPros! It's an option on them. :dunno
I was pretty frustrated about it at work, I got a wireless KB and mouse, all excited about using with my MacPro at work. No go. Had to buy a Bluetooth adapter. And the adapters won't wake the Mac from sleep, as the built-ins will. :cry I guess the techs at work figured I wouldn't need it. And, I guess, I didn't really NEED it. :D

My Power Mac doe not have it, but I have the antenna to add it, if I wanted to add it.

Its all standard household power is 240 volt 50 cycles here. Except for the people that req 3 phase & that is 415 volts.

WiFi = wireless internets (networking)
Bluetooth = short range wireless for your mouse and such.

First thing to do, Gus, is to calibrate your monitor. If you don't have a hardware calibrator, go to the Apple Menu>System Preferences>Displays>Color>Calibrate.
Turn on advanced, and get ready to squint your eyes. Take your time and make sure that at each step the apple in the box disappears. At the end, make sure you change the gamma from the Mac default of 1.8 to 2.2, you can leave your white point at native.

also, use command + tab to toggle between programs like alt + tab in windows. Get it to itunes (so that it displays it on the top bar) then press command + Q to kill that program. Command + Q will completely shut down any program. Just clciking it on the red circle in the corner kills the interface, but leaves the app running in the background.

A serious bug has been reported in Leopard. Read about it here (http://tomkarpik.com/articles/massive-data-loss-bug-in-leopard/). It can happen when you are moving a folder to an external drive or other USB device. If something happens to the external device while the move is in progress (say, a cord gets disconnected or the device fails) the source folder is deleted even though the move did not complete. Files that were not copied before the failure go to bit heaven.
I have also seen claims that this problem is not new to Leopard but exists in previous versions of OSX as well. :dunno
There is an easy way to protect yourself until Apple comes up with a fix. Don't move folders to external devices. Copy them instead. When the copy has completed, then you can delete the source folder safely.

I have never, ever been able to complete that calibration. Ever. It's stupid. Gus, don't even try it, you'll toss it out the window, guarantee it.
At the end, make sure you change the gamma from the Mac default of 1.8 to 2.2, you can leave your white point at native.I ran 2.2 forever, going on the usual reading, that it's just "better". Just recently I switched back to default 1.8 and I like looking at my screen again. dgrin would hurt my eyes on 2.2, too contrasty. Maybe on gus's big gorgeous screen :dunno I really have stopped trying to keep up with all the what's "right" with color and calibration. Gus, you got the answer about Force Quit, but I highly doubt that you had to use it. Force Quit should be a last resort. Do not get in the habit of using it.
Clicking the red close dot does NOT quit an application, it only closes the window (with a few very rare exceptions). Most likely you DID have iTunes open, but you had the window closed. The app was still running. To really close an application you need to quit it. File>Quit.
The dock shows you which applications are running, as will holding down the command key (don't let go!) and hitting tab. As long as you hold down comand you can see what's open, switch between apps, quit apps, hide apps, etc.

I could never get the apple to disappear either. Just get as close as you can.
Maybe some tech type person here could post some screen grabs showing their before and after examples of trying to make the apple disappear? I'd like to see how close they get just to see what it's supposed to look like.
Oh, and when I used huey to adjust my monitor, there was hardly any difference, so using the built in monitor calibration on my particular monitor was almost identical to the huey adjusted version.
I've used Macs when they were apples back in the 1980s... but I learn new tips here all the time. It's amazing how different people learn and use different techniques.

Gus, open a program. Look at the top of your screen. Top left is a blue Apple. To the right of that is the name of the program you're using, and its menu strip. To close it, you can either click on the File drop-down menu, and click on Close. Or hit Command-Q.
Try opening a bunch of programs. Then click the red dot to close each one's window.
Now, hold down the Command button, and hit Tab. You'll get a little window that shows each of your programs. Each time you hit Tab, you call up the next program.
In other words, as David said, you closed the window... but not the program.
To close the program itself, I do the Command-Tab trick to select the program I want to close, and then Command-Q to close the program itself. All keystrokes, no mouse action. To use the mouse, Command-Tab to the program, then click on the File drop-down menu, and click on Close.
Clear as mud?

CMD + N should open a new window regardless of which browser you have.
Getting more technical you could try playing with CMD + T for a new Tab, and play with those too...
Playing around with F9-F12 could also reveal some neat tricks.

You can do that too. Minimize a window and open a new one. (Keyboard sequence would be Command-M, then Command-N, works in Safari & Firefox). That should be a lot like Windows.
Tabs are better though. I think in Safari you have to enable tabs in preferences, but once that's done you can hit Command-T to open a New Tab.
Or right-click a link to open it in a new window or a new tab or download the target, same as Windows.
Or Command-click a link to open it in a new tab. Another way to do that is to click the scroll wheel if you have one.

if you're in safari, cmd + L will select the url in the address bar. You can then type in your url and hit cmd + T for a new tab or cmd + shift + T to have that tab selected.
cmd + spacebar will launch spotlight and from there you can type in anything you want to search for. In Leopard, Applications now show as the first hit so you can use it as an application launcher. cmd + space, type saf, safari is selected in spotlight, hit enter and away you go!
The hotkeys take a bit of getting used to but are so much more powerful than they were in windows.

Okay here's some fun firefox ones.
The F6 key highlights the current page's URL in the address bar.
When you're entering in a url you can complete it by using modifiers to the enter key. cmd-enter does .com, shift-enter does .net, and cmd-shift-enter does .org.
So if you type smugmug and hit cmd enter it will change the url to http://www.smugmug.com/ automagically. If you hit shift enter instead, it will change the url to http://www.smugmug.net/ and if you instead hit cmd-shift-enter it would make it http://www.smugmug.org/.
Can safari do that?

if even you can't fix it, then I'm happy :D as long as the PS view is close enough to web, that's fine with me. I only use the Bridge preview for quick culling of shots anyway.

I was hoping you wouldn't notice that. Aussie spuds are harmless, unless you're MrsIt who has a weird eye potato allergy.

I know this was answered a few time somewhere in this big convoluted thread, but can someone please save me an hour or two of reading and tell me which colourspace I should set on my imac. I did the calibration thing and and have that saved as an option, but if I go to one of the other presets, which one should I use? sRGB? one of the others?

Set where?
Meaning, set Photoshop to sRGB. Calibrate your monitor. You don't "set your mac" to a color space, per se.
Make sense?

sorry, I should have been clearer. I have done the monitor calibration thing (couldn't really make the apple disappear!) and have since decided that that setting is a little too dark compared to the other presets I can choose in the "color" setting in the display preferences. So if I don't want to use the profile I saved using the monitor calibrator then which profile should I set it back to?? Make sense? I am probably mixing up my terminology badly here...

Internally Lr uses it's own color space. It has the size of Pro Photo but the response curve of sRGB. *see below for how Br sees things
I did the change and I still have a bit of wonkiness - PS is now looking like FF, but the image in Bridge is NOT the same color as in PS. Screen grab (very obvious, colors are more saturated and contrasty in Bridge preview, on right):
Bridge displays images according to you Camera RAW preferences. Import an image into ACR, then adjust the basics like saturation and tonal curve, etc. Don't adjust exposure or any other setting that is more image to image dependent. Then go under the menu and click "save new camera raw defaults". Now bridge will display with better saturation, vibrance, contrast curve, etc..
This was a HUGE nightmare for me a while back and it took weeks of reading to get that simple paragraph posted above.
BTW I'm on a PC but this problem has proven to be an equal opportunity PITA and it's cross platform.

three ways I can think of (Safari, anyway):
1. right-click to get the menu; press option to get the "Download Linked File As..." command to manually set the download folder
2. option-click the link to the image (option-click forces link to download to default download folder instead of appearing in browser)
3. drag the image off the page to a folder
Here is something I didn't know until like a week ago. If you are dragging and you can't see the target drop window, without stopping the drag (keep mouse pressed) hit Command-Tab with your other hand and pick the app icon so that the target window comes into view, then you can drop. Also when dragging to a closed folder you can press Space (again without stopping the drag) to pop open the folder in mid-drag; good way to drill down while dragging.

All I ever do is either right click and save linked file ( or whatever it says)
or just drag the image to the desktop - put it where i want later - or you could use 'command+shift+4' and drag across the area you want copied and that will save it as a selective screenshot

FYI:
If you ever grab a portion of a screen and send it to the Clipboard (using the shortcut cmd+shift+control+4), and then decide you’d rather have the image be a file of its own, just switch to Preview and press command-N—there’s no need to grab the screenshot again.

The mouse will highlight the expand/reduce/close buttons (red/yellow/green buttons on the top left) as i move it over them...it simply wont do anything with them.

Before shutting off the computer, always try Command-Tab to get to another application first, or try using the dock to switch away. Rarely does the entire OS lock up completely. It is usually just one app that is hung.
If one app is hung, you can force-quit just that one (Command-Option-Esc).
If you must do a hard shut down, do it the same way as on many PCs: Hold the power button down several seconds until it goes off.

Tks mate...i was wondering about that as both times i shut it off for a few mins & when i restarted , it came back to that page immediately (2 seconds) telling me it wasnt really shut down at all.
The new mouse batterys appear to have fixed it.

Batteries should last months and months, I would think. I know the keyboard said 9 months normal use, I didn't read about the mouse batt life.
Command-W just closes the window. If the application is hung, that will do nothing to help it, most likely. You want to command-q (quit) or, if that doesn't work, command-option-escape, which will allow you to force-quit an application.
[EDIT: AppleJack is apparently not yet compatible with Leopard. I was steering you wrong.]
One thing I would recommend is downloading and installing AppleJack (http://applejack.sourceforge.net/). It's the idiot's best friend to repairing any problems your Mac may be having. I'm not saying that you need it now, but it's a great thing to have in your back pocket. It's not a normal application. Once installed you do the following to run it:
1) restart, and after the chime hold down command-s until you see text appear, at which time you let go.
2) once it's started up, type "applejack auto restart", and get a cup of coffee while it runs. When it's done, it will restart your computer.
That's it. It runs 5 different things that will clear up 99% of your problems you may develop on your Mac.
The other great idiot's non-troubleshooting technique is a restart. If you're having trouble, system's running slow, restart. This should be a pretty rare occurrence. I restart my laptop every couple of months, and usually just because a software update requires it.

Gus, this closing a window vs. quitting an application is one of the big differences between Mac and Windows, and is a hard habit for new switchers to master. They close the window thinking that they've closed the application, but it's still open. You'll get the hang of it.
You'll get the hang of it.

Hey, Dale.
I merged your post into this thread, we're trying to keep all the Mac posts in one place, since if we don't, the Windows users get all nervous and anxious. :D
1) Yes, more RAM. The 4GB kit at crucial is $200--why not? :ear
2) DxO has a lot to offer. :thumb I would add PS to LR first, though. There are a ton of non-photo related 3rd party apps recommended in this thread. As for photo apps, LR/PS/DxO should do you well for a bit, I'd say. :thumb

Thanks DavidTO!
The post regarding 3rd party apps I was looking for was one that you posted a few weeks ago. I found in this thread!:clap I will search around and see what else I can find.
One app I used a lot in Windows world was Roboform (http://www.roboform.com/). It's a single source for encrypting your passwords and personal information to automate logins and form filling. Very useful. I found one similar for the Mac, 1Password (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21711/1passwd). While it has the same basic functionality, it's not quite as user friendly as Roboform.
So far the Macbook has been a surprise. When considering my purchase, I was set to buy the MBP. Then they introduced an update to the MB. The rep at the Apple store said he uses LR on an older MB, and said it runs a little slow, but fine for his needs. I've found it to be very acceptable thus far. We'll see what happens when I have LR, Firefox, and other apps running at the same time. If it's too slow, I'll buy a MBP when they are updated next year.

1Password uses the OS X Keychain. It can auto-fill passwords and forms; it has a browser plug-in.
It's a bit of a win for convenience, but personally I used it and stopped using it because I just go to Keychain Access and look up any passwords that I happen to forget. If think if I were more disciplined and used 1Password's extra features more (e.g. it can auto-generate a STRONG password for you for a site, and have a unique password for each site) it would be worth it, but ::shrug::

According to the website, it uses both the OS X Keychain, and it's own encryption to ensure your information is a little more secure. The same was true with Roboform on the PC. I also like the fact that it will generate a strong password for you, and automatically save the password.
Now I'm considering a firewall. My router has a firewall built in, but if I'm on a public network, I would prefer to have a bit more protection. Any recommendations?

What's wrong with the built-in firewall?
You also might consider Little Snitch.
I don't know that anything is wrong with the built-in firewall. I think it stems from my lack of trust developed from years in the Windows world. Little Snitch looks interesting. I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the info.

A cool little hack/workaround (http://t.ecksdee.org/post/19001860) for one of my least favorite aspects of Leopard.
Oh man, I've been hacking around trying to come up with something similar for a while now, but those icons are just too gorgeous to resist. Combined with the pref to turn glass mode off and the Dock is back to being useful and no longer causing me to become violently ill. Thanks!!

Yeah, not sure how it can be "more secure" than the keychain. Other than the stuff isn't human readable via Keychain Access, but it's totally wide open via their GUI to it (argh). Means migrating *away* from it is a PITA.
As far as a firewall... your router's firewall is fine. OS X doesn't really *need* a firewall as by default there aren't any services listening (no NetBIOS, thanks ;-) In turning on the firewall, you're just blocking ports that aren't listening anyway... so you're not going to get much. If you want outbound connection monitoring, there are tools like Little Snitch but Spyware isn't currently an issue so I don't know that they're worth it.
The OS X firewall in Leopard is also a bit goofy. It has application signing built in, and I think the technology is a bit green right now. OS X will actually sign some unsigned applications, and this breaks them. One that has been broken is World of Warcraft. This will be addressed soon, but IMO right now the Leopard firewall is best left... turned off :wink

CatOne,
Your post really confused me. If I understand you correctly, your saying that Keychain is unsecure, and the firewall is better turned off? Huh!:scratch Maybe I'm missing something here.
It's been a long day. Between work and trying to figure out a personal finance solution on the Mac, I'm fried! Quicken for the Mac is a POS. Very frustrated I did not look into this further before making the leap.

I believe he's saying that KeyChain Access is secure. The other not so much. It opens up a vulnerability.
For the firewall, if the ports aren't listening, where's the need is the question he's asking.

Which browser? :wink
Safari: navigate to page, open preferences, general tab, click "set to current page" button.
Camino: open preferences, general tab, type url into Home Page box, or drag and drop from bookmarks or current location bar.
Firefox: pretty much either of the above... just go to main tab instead of general tab, and use the similar and obviously named button.
So here's a great mac tip for you. apple-comma, aka "⌘," is the "open preferences" keyboard shortcut. All well behaved Mac apps use that, I'm not sure the Apple development environment will even let you change it. Seriously. All well behaved Mac apps also use their preferences panels for pretty much all configuration options.

Except for Adobe apps, which are sticking to the Command-K that they have used since before Apple standardized its prefs shortcut. (Except for Lightroom, which actually uses the Apple shortcut...weird.) At least you can change the Preferences shortcut to match the Apple one in some apps like Photoshop.

It does have something like My Pictures. It also has built-in software to help you play with photos.
I'm sure you can get free software that will open a Word document. But just like on a Windows machine, to actually create a Word doc, you'll need Microsoft's Office for Mac.

Actually you can create word documents with several different applications. In addition to MS's Office for Mac:
Pages from iWork (apple) **by far the best of the four options, well worth the $79**
NeoOffice (OpenOffice.org derivative)

Vista was designed by SATAN!!! :bluduhSo I have a Mac(book pro) already and today got my Mac Pro. Whenever I got a new PC, I had to reinstall all my applications, restore my settings and live w/out all the files I forgot to copy over (after re-imaging the machine to get rid of all the OEM junk).
When I set up my Mac Pro today, I used the Migration Assistant to copy the settings from my laptop...ho-ly-cow. It got *everything*. Applications, files, network settings, preferences, users...even my browser cookies (see note). First time in on the Mac Pro and it was like i'd been using it for a year.
Saved me *days* worth of work getting my computer up and running.
note: It did manage to mangle my password somehow so I couldn't log on. Was able to reset the password using the install disc. After that though, all roses.

Apple should be better about informing people about the upgrades and what is installed. It would be best to do a custom install and not install gigs of print drivers, that is what a huge portion of the upgrade is. I trim down what is installed, but I cannot simply plug into any printer.

I am really looking forward to my new laptop, my Sharp is getting pretty tired, with an AMD 64 2700+ and 512MB RAM, it has a really hard time with my 1DIIN files, even MEDIUM .jpegs take quite a while to open/close on CS2. hmm, I was referring to the fact that PSD, TIF, JPG and some RAW (Canon at least) files provide for an embedded thumbnail. These files do not require a complete rendering, instead the thumbnail is provided for previews. Windows XP for example uses this in its 'thumbnail view'.

I think it's the Intel chipset in use. The current one supports 4GB. Most of the rest of the computer is the same. It is the same reason iMacs and MacBook Pros went from supporting 3GB to 4GB RAM a few months ago. You cannot force an older version to recognize 4GB.
There was also an upgrade to the video subsystem. Otherwise they are still the same MacBooks.

Goodbye Parallels, hello VMware Fusion (https://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/).
Seems to be faster, less clunky and easier to install, use & manage.

Gus, I click on that link and the PDF opens in a Safari window, just fine.
Which browser are you using?
Safari should just view it. Other browsers like FF should save it and give you the option to open in the application of your choosing. Use Preview to view PDFs, as mentioned above.

It sounds like Adobe is mucking it up. Try this (http://shimshak.iblogget.com/2007/11/07/view-pdf-files-in-safari-3/).

That might be the toolbar. You can show or hide that by going to View -> Show Toolbar (or typing ⌘|). If the toolbar *is* showing, you may have "customized" the location away. Go to View -> Customize Toolbar... and drag the address and search widget into the toolbar.

not sure if this is the correct thread for this question but here goes...
Just bought my first mac - the 2.2 macbook - and am trying to get my screen saver to work with rss feeds from my smugmug account. I pulled up the rss feed in safari for my favorites gallery and pasted that into the options section of the desktop and screen saver config. I get a message that there are no images to display. I added a second rss feed (recent photos) but still nothing.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
E

I have a PowerBook G4 at work with a fresh install of Leopard on it. I dock X11 to the taskbar from the Applications menu. Every time I start it, a second copy of X shows up in the task bar. The second one has the "active" dot displayed under it.
I tried to dock the second copy of X to the task bar and delete the other one... no luck, it still creates a second copy.
Any way to avoid this duplication? It's only a very minor annoyance, but it didn't happen under Jaguar or Tiger (I think).

Right-click on each one and choose "reveal in finder". Do they point to the same place? My guess would be that they don't. Not sure how to fix it in either case, tho. :)
Have you tried removing the copy that you added manually and retaining the "new" one by right-clicking and choosing "Keep in dock"?

First off, it's the Dock, not the Taskbar. :deal
:D
Secondly, I've seen that on a couple of oddball apps. X11 fits the bill for oddball, IMO. I would just live with it. Some things just aren't worth fretting over, IMO.

D'oh, sorry, still fairly new to this Macinslosh stuff :wink.
Yes, they definitely point to different applications. /usr/X11/X11 and /Application/Utilities/X11. If I move the former to the tas... Dock(!) and execute it, then it bounces around endlessly after spawning the second X. Ack!
I suppose I'll just live with it barring an extensive Google search (the "Keep in Dock" did not work either).
Go to View -> Customize Toolbar... and drag the address and search widget into the toolbar.
Yeah this is my issue but i cant drag & drop it...it just jumps every time.

Make sure your View menu looks like this:

If it says Show Toolbar, that means it's hidden. You want it to show.

I've had that happen on Tiger... not sure what caused it. Solution was to quit X11, drag ALL instances of it off the dock, then drag a fresh new copy on from /Applications/Utilities/X11. Once I did that that problem went away.

I went & looked for the files to be removed as mentioned & they simply did not exist so i went to adobe's site & downloaded their PDF reader.. rebooted & all is well.
Tks.
