Hi All
I have my domain name www.ergphoto.com (http://www.ergphoto.com) registered through GoDaddy but hosted at a company called Gryphyn Media (They setup the registration with GoDaddy). I have asked them numerous times and they even sent me this asking if it would be ok to contact Smugmug support:
Our servers use BIND to manage DNS, and we have been unable to get it to accept a CNAME for a TLD. When we do it manually, the domain does not resolve.
Have you set up the domain name on the smugmug end? I think they call it the "hostname" process?
Do you mind of we consult with the people at smugmug about your account?
Does this sound right to you? Is my leg being pulled? I am using them so that I can have email and other functions, but I am getting upset that they are not responding. They have been great until recently.
Thoughts?
Thanks guys...I appreciate it
Ed

get a 3-way email going to our help desk. Godaddy is the easiest of all to set up. Something's not right.

BIND not accept a CNAME? Someone's on crack... especially because it "doesnt' resolve"? Someone's on crack. DNS can be changed without anything attached to the target. I made a living out of it... with BIND. you set up all your A records and your CNAME record, then ship the equipment to the POP... so when the plugs hit the machines, it resolves and you can do your installs... so someone's not quite in posession of their faculties.
Must be a trainee there.

Thanks Mark...I appreciate the response and Smugmug support did contact my provider :ivar However, they still don't have the settings right and getting a lot of emails about the site being down. I am getting frustrated but the owner is working on it...I hope.
Thanks

My hell continues. :huh Not with Smugmug support...they have been fantastic but with my hosting provider. They won't respond to my emails and they screwed up the DNS for my site trying to set this up. It has been down for a week.
I have been using them for 3 years without any problems and now all of a sudden they won't help me.
Can anyone recommend a cheap but reliable hosting provider just for email purposes? I was looking at Inmotionhosting.com.
I am soooo frustrated over this mess. Not to mention that I gave out 30+ business cards over the weekend and now no one can get to my site.
Thanks guys...had to vent

EdHi Ed,
I just ran a test on your domain:

your provider has messed up the CNAME record. It should read 'www.smugmug.com' instead of what it says now. The A-record is correct.
Do you have access to change it yourself? or have someone change it?

Thanks Ivar...I can not change this myself. I have been sending them emails for over a week with no response. This is why I need to look for another host. I don't mind mistakes or confusion but a lack of response is unacceptable in the business world....thanks again for all of your help and the Smugmug support team...it makes the difference :clap
I am also waiting for GoDaddy to respond to an email I sent them this morning...hoping they can help also.
Take care

Not that anyone cares but my hell has ended I think today. My hosting company never responded to me all week...Since last Friday night, even after emailing them every day since and than telling them that if they didn't respond, I would have to find another hosting service...still no response.
But here was the problem. They had registered my domain for me at GoDaddy and were the Admins for it. After 10+ emails with GoDaddy...I had to fill out a form, make a copy of my driver's license, wait for them to verify and then give me the controls of my own domain...the GoDaddy process happened quickly today and I was able to change the DNS to point to my new hosting company...and still no word from the old hosting company.
Now at least the people I am taking pictures for can access my site that is on my business cards.
Now I am wondering, will I ever hear from the old hosting company? I never asked them for a refund although I just renewed less than 30 days ago...I am not sure if I broke any policies. I don't think I did since I was the owner of the domain and decided to switch hosts.
I now have to setup the CNAME. I ended going with Host Monster. They appear to have their act together and from what I read on the web, they are the best. 300GB space/bandwidth for $4.95 month. Sounded good to me for the space that I received.
Any thoughts on the above?
Thanks again to everyone and the Smugmug support team.

I am currently using the sister company to Host Monster, BlueHost. So far I really like them. Both their phone support and their live chat have been wonderful. I actually get to talk to real people!!
