It's all in a name

I am trying to figure out the best digital naming format for folders and files. I organize all my pics within folders by subject and then by year. For example:

D:
---> 2005
-----> Trip to Santa Barbara
--------> Trip to Santa Barbara - 001.jpg
--------> Trip to Santa Barbara - 002.jpg
--------> Trip to Santa Barbara - etc.jpg

This works okay for me, but I feel like I need a "better" naming/organization system. However, I'm not sure what "better" is I'm curious how others name and organize files.

2005
---Month
------Event
---------view (if applicable)
------------image #.

Example:

2005
--January
------New Year's Picnic
---------BBQ Team
---------Races
---------Dogs
------Formal Dinner
---------Portraits
---------Dogs
------New Car
---------Inside
---------Outside
