OK I’m applying for my Royal Photographic Society distinction and this is one of the images that I wanted to include in the panel. At a recent workshop there was a suggestion that this image might leave me open to criticism (this was not because it is out of place with the other images being submitted).
I’m interested to hear some other people thoughts - so whip me

I stripped the color info out of your post. We have a white theme that some people use, which would make your text invisible. It's really best to leave the font color alone. :thumb

Thanks for the tip

What am I looking at, a horse that was photoshopped in to the picture, or someone waving a plastic horse favor at a bonfire?
This image shows that you know how to properly expose for the flame, and that you can leave other things as a silhouette. But other than that... I find myself wondering what's the point... if it's comedy, if it's documentary, or if in fact you did find a flying horse (shouldn't it then be a unicorn?).
I find myself thinking "If I had a point and shoot and held it up at a bonfire, this might be the image I captured if the flash didn't go off." And thus, if I personally were applying for distinction with my images, I'd want to offer something that I felt had more to offer than just a snapshot.

I cant say I see anything distinctive or otherwise remarkable about the photo. My initial reaction was a PS horse in the middle.... but then I see this string.... horse ballon? still dont get it. It just doesnt speak to me. catone managed to sum up most of what I was thinking. I'd consider other stuff from your portfolio.

I see what you are saying. A lot of people have asked if the horse has been added in PS (it was a kid holding a balloon BWT).
I get really polarized responses to this one. Personally I love the shot. It's exactly what I was trying to achieve and once blown up big it is extremely impactfull (plus a little clearer to see the string on the balloon).
However, I'm thinking I will leave it out of the submission as I only risk some people not liking it. Perhaps I'll just put in a nice picture of a cat or something simple like that instead

It may be more impressive at large scale, but at this size it's just difficult to see what it's a picture of. The horse shape, of course, is very clear, and obviously there's some sort of fire going on, but the primary response I have for this shot is puzzlement. Perhaps if there was a cat somewhere, I'd feel better about it.

I might be not representative, but I really like it very much. It is unusual. It has "the atmosphere". It does have the horse, too, but even if it's PS equine kind, I still like it a lot.

My first impression of the photo was of an angry mob burning something down and the horse was leaping to safety.
I like the shot, but the action or "story" seems so far away that it's a little difficult to figure out. Have you tried cropping down so that the fire and horse fill more of the image?

Here's a re-crop. What does everyone think?

I like the crop better than the original.

I too like the crop better, but the image is still not distinctive. The string holding up the balloon is still visible and distracts. But really, the image still seems like a snapshot of sorts and not very profound. The image elements seem like out of a dream, but the presentation is too underwhelming.

Just thought I would let everyone know that I did submit this image in the end (in it's original format) and I got my distinction . WOO HOO!!
