View Full Version : The Best of the Glacier Shootout

DavidTO
Oct-04-2007, 09:30 AM
We're going to put up a gallery on dgrin.smugmug.com of the best shots from Glacier. Don't worry, it's not a contest! Just reply in this thread with the LINK to your best shot or two or three, and I'll make sure it gets in the gallery.

We'll link back to your site, and only need SmugMug Large (or whatever service you use: we don't need the originals, is what I'm saying).

So reply, post the links, and I'll make it happen! :D

UPDATE: To save you having to read the entire thread to find the fruits of this discussion, you can skip ahead to here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=87444). :thumb

Thus far I have only processed like less than 10% of the plunder.
I'm pretty sure that this guy

will make it all the way to the top, but I hope there will be more :-)

BTW, those images won't disappear from our original galleries, you only gonna copy them, right? Otherwise I'll upload another copy for dgrin gallery...

NOTHING would disappear - we'd just snag a copy of the -L large size, and put it on dgrin.smug - with your name and site in the caption, for more goodies to see :)

What about watermarks? I automatically watermark all my images now but a whole gallery of different ones might be distracting.

And since I'm with Nik in that less than 10% of my photos have been sorted through, here is one of the few I'm finished with. It's going to be a while before I'm able to sit down and do this for real, unfortunately. So I hope you're not closing this thread anytime soon. ;)

Yeah, I don't want to start sending out emails for those that might not frequent the forums as much, or might not find this. So if any of you personally know someone else who went, maybe draw their attention this way? :D

I think these are somewhat different from what we already have...Nik, let's hold on these. I don't want to have a firm number of shots per shooter, but the idea here is really a collection from everybody, not just shots, shooters. Cool?

Also, I like the idea of really challenging everyone to think hard about their best shot. It's easy to toss a large list of "good ones", much harder to critique yourself to the limit, really pick that BEST shot.

We'll be publishing a Blurb book of the Best of Glacier. The special deal that we get is outlined in the post from Markham I linked above.

So, here's the deal: GET YOUR IMAGES INTO US, and we'll get them in the book. Then other Dgrinners can purchase the book, and get free shipping. Schmoo will be putting the book together. She write good! :D

From my experiences with Blurb so far that sort of thing doesn't matter. Extra long panos will, of course, be smaller in the final product due to the fact that the page is only so big, so it's either squish small or crop ends off. But the nice thing is that the slurp program gives LOTS of options as to how to fit them onto a page and you can be sure that the utmost consideration will be taken to showcase each shot so that it looks its best. :D

Well, as one (maybe the only one) that decided to opt out of the book, I'll try
to explain why.

I was one of the first to add my two shots to the gallery. After about a month,
it was announced that "We" (at that time I had no idea who "We" were)
were going to make a book with the shots.
Nothing was said how many books were being made, or if our shots would
be used in other ways. (ie promotions, whatnot)

The email that David sent was very vague, at one point it says "if you want
to opt out just say so.", then the next line in the email says "if you have a
problem with us using your images say so."
If I opt out of the book, what other ways of using them are we talking about?
What am I giving you (we, them, us) the right to use the shots for?

Am I just paranoid? Maybe. Lets just say at 49 years old, I've been stepped
on a few times in my life. I'm a little more careful now.

If you would be willing to do something for me (to end my paranoia),
Send me (others) an email saying that my (our) shots would be used only to create
XXX number of books. Have someone with the authority (Andy, Baldy, whoever)
to electronically sign it, and I'm back in. (but I want the cover):wink :wink :wink (just kidding)

Now that I am the most hated man on the dgrin forums, and I'm sure some
will think that I'm an ungrateful S.O.B., I'm really not. I enjoyed the trip,
loved talking to the new folks, and the folks from the year before.
I even like the idea of the book, I just like to have my bases covered.

Hopefully that doesn't make me the bad guy.

P.S. Just how large (in inches) is the book going to be?
The largest shots on my site are 1200 x 800, how large are they going to be printed?
I guess I just ask to many questions.:dunno

Hi Dave, don't worry and I'm glad this issue is being raised because you bring up good points. As this is the maiden voyage of the Dgrin/SM/Blurb community project it's great that these questions are being raised sooner than later. I think it's more than fair for all of us as photographers to make sure our bases are covered and our artwork is protected. :D

I will let Andy or Markham address the legal stuffs but I can tell you that we'll end up going with the standard landscape book format. The optimal sizes for the very largest (full bleed) containers in the book layouts are ~2888 pixels on the longest side but if the photos that you submit are smaller than that then there are many many ways to get them in at lower resolution, too.

For information purposes, for design reasons I won't be making every photo a full-bleed page but the max possible in the landscape format book is 8.2 inches by 9.6 inches.

I hope this helps!

I know Kate wants to get a couple of shots up, she just hasn't decided which ones yet.
OK, I (we) haven't gone through all of her shots yet. How was I to know that

2 years, on this trip, 1900. :dunno

I think that the book is for the people who went on the trip. Who else is gonna buy it? I doubt anyone. Certainly there's no profit on the book. It was just a fun idea, and I think you misunderstood. Or we could have explained better. Sure your concerns are valid, Dave, but nobody's trying to make a buck from you or your images here.

I like it, except for there not being much background, and the lone tree feels a little out of place...

On second thought, maybe it's because of the lone tree that the background feels empty, it might help if you cropped the bottom as close to the bird as you can, to kind of hide the tree...

Or just clone it out. The background is enough of a constant color that this should be fairly easy to accomplish.

Boy, you guys are unstoppable! :D

OK, so if we do this, we've got an added layer of complexity here, and I think that we could use some help.

1) We need to have photos that we have the right to use.

2) We need to have permission to publish people's likenesses. No one should be surprised to see their picture in the book.

Schmoo is already taking on a huge job just getting the photos put together. I'm looking for someone to coordinate the photos and rights to the candid images.

But here's the catch: it needs to happen rather quickly, and I don't think we should be leaving anyone out that wants to be a part of it. Whoever gathers the candids and keeps track of the rights will work with Schmoo to get the images collected.

Who's up for it? :ear

FWIW - My image/likeness and my photos (the ones submitted) can be used in whatever resolution is required to get the job done.

Cool beans! Thanks for stepping up.

I think just a PM or email is fine. We don't need to get too legaleze about this. I just want to make sure that everyone is aware and OK with what we're doing. This book really belongs to all of the people at the shootout. And it doesn't need to be real formal or anything. I just don't want any surprises. :thumb

David's right - you guys are unstoppable! I am really excited about getting this book done and in everyone's hands and I can't believe we're almost there.

Scott Quier generously offered to give me a hand with the consent stuff, so if you're OK with candids of you being in the book, please send him a PM. Thanks!

As for candid submissions feel free to send them in or post links and I'll stick them in a private gallery until ready to use. The larger the better, so preferably XL or O. I'm going to tentatively say there's no limit so that we can pick the ones where consent of all the models are given and still have enough.

I think that should work? Whew! :D

Hi everyone,

We've been getting quite a few PMs requesting specific approval on each candid photo we use. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of time to get individual OKs on 50+ proofs! If you are not comfortable with us selecting the shots we understand and will scrap this part of the project. No harm, no foul: We have so many great artistic shots already. :D Of course I would like to not leave anyone out, but consent for using likenesses is going to have to be an all-or-nothing kind of deal, meaning YES for using, NO for not at all. Please let Scott or myself know how you feel about this.

Thanks!

Was the end of the year a hard stop for picture submissions?

Work and home life have been insanely crazy since before Thanksgiving and I just got back from being out of the country for two weeks. I haven't had a chance to do much with the Glacier pics for 6 or 8 weeks. Definitely want to get a copy of the book even if I don't have one of my pictures in there.

If I missed it then my New Year's resolution will be to process faster after the Arches Shootout.

Alrighty! The book has been slowly coming together and I think it's safe to say that it's entering the final stages. In my extremely humble opinion, I think it looks totally awesomely great thanks to all you contributors. :bow

As I finish the formatting and tweaking details, I would really like to have a few people to bounce ideas off of, if you will. I would love to involve all 50 of us who were there, but due to technological impossibility would 2 or 3 of you Dgrinners be interested in being an abbreviated advisory board? It wouldn't be a timesuck, just a method of getting feedback from others who are artistic, creative, observant and shared the experience in Montana. It would be most appreciated! :thumb

I also wanted to say: Thank you so much for your patience in this project, everyone! I hope you'll eventually agree that it's worth the delay.
