View Full Version : 4th Annual SmugMug / Dgrin Shootout -- Arches National Park October 2008
Andy
Oct-02-2007, 11:13 AM
The moment that you all have been waiting for is here: our official announcement for the SmugMug / Dgrin shootout '08!
We'll be going to Utah, to Arches National Park (http://www.nps.gov/arch/), Canyonlands (http://www.nps.gov/cany), Deadhorse Point (http://www.utah.com/stateparks/dead_horse.htm) and the Moab (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Moab,+UT,+United+States+of+America&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title) area.
Dates: October 8-11, 2008 (checkout Oct 12th!)
Lodging: Red Cliffs Lodge (http://redcliffslodge.com) - a superb resort, on the Colorado River just a few miles out of Moab. It's a beautiful resort, gorgeous rooms, and a great restaurant - plus they have their own vineyard :1drink
Pros: Marc Muench (http://www.muenchworkshops.com/gallery/3350852), Dave Porter (http://www.muenchworkshops.com/gallery/3506542), and Andy Williams (http://www.muenchworkshops.com/gallery/3502232), will return to instruct, guide and lead our expedition.
Food: SmugMug will be hosting a banquet dinner on Friday night, the rest of your food is taken care of individually.
Group: Limited to up to 60 people. First come (i.e. paid!), first served.
Activities: Shooting at Arches NP, Canyonlands, Deadhorse, Moab, heck you can even go river rafting, horse back riding, and Jeep trailing if you like! Special Activity!: Kelsey Gray (http://www.prezwoodz.smugmug.com/) and John Borland (http://www.morffed.com/)will be attending the shootout... If you don't know, this area is one of the premier climbing spots in North America. John and Kelsey are our favorite photographer/climbers and would love to get together with other so inclined dgrinners to share their climbing and slacklining adventures. You've seen their awesome pics, now it's YOUR chance to get a little taste of what they do. You can get all the details, ask any questions or just talk about these plans in this thread (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=73239).
Travel: Fly to Grand Junction, or other nearby cities (http://redcliffslodge.com/about-the-inn/directions.htm) and then drive to Moab. We will be arranging for shared rides and rental cars, and participants will be splitting the cost of rentals/fuel. There will be information threads posted on travel and cars as the Shootout draws nearer.
Cost/Payments: There is no fee for the tuition or attendance of the shootout and workshop! SmugMug picks up the cost of the pros who are leading the workshop. Attendees pay their own way, and pay for the lodging and meals. The exact lodging costs are still to be determined. The range in room prices is due to the different accommodations we have.
Here are the room descriptions for the Shootout:

We're going to be handling the finances a little differently this time, as we are only accepting a deposit, there is no final payment made to us. You will pay your balance at the lodge. There are just too many variables to keep track of for everyone. The deposit will be $300, part of which will go to the shared cost of the meeting room for our critiques, after which the balance will be applied to your room. Deposits are non-refundable after July 15, 2008.
Payments are made via Google Checkout, in this gallery (http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/3579847).
Sign up: The Shootout is currently full. You can request to be placed on the waiting list, just send an email (no PM's, please!!!) to David Rosenthal (linked in this gallery (http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/3579847)), and make sure you include your preference for room, if any, who you will be traveling with (if anyone) and if you're interested in the climbing/slacklining. Some of the rooms are more appropriate for couples, others for singles, so please specify.
Questions? Ask them here in this thread! We're fortunate again this year to have David Rosenthal (DavidTO) helping to organize, and put things together. David's going to handle all the reservations, and will be putting up all the informational threads, as the trip draws near. He's your go-to guy for this trip!
The last three trips were completely filled, so get your reservations and deposits in early.

Can someone (David? Andy?) explain what does this "maximum X people" mean?
I mean, if there is only one King bed in the room, how can it fit 4? :scratch
Or it means there are 4 rooms and one shared restroom/bathroom?
I guess we're all a bit sensitive about that after St.Mary's Lodge experience :wink

Nik,
That info is lifted directly from the lodge's site. It's really just to give you an idea of the room. There is a King and a Queen sofa sleeper in the room, so what the lodge is telling you is that you can have 4, 2 on the king, 2 on the queen. Make sense?

I'll be traveling with ChrisP6 again this year and hope to get one more friend to come with us.
Who do we contact if we want to arrive a few days early and have the same room for pre-shoot and shoot?
Don't know yet about the slackline stuff. Too early to see how my back will be.
We would prefer, I suspect, a Queen/Queen River Cabin Suite.
Sorry if this info should have gone someplace else. Still way early in the morning to be thinking straight. :wink

Would it be okay for a non-photographer spouse to tag along? My anniversary is the 10th, so I guess I shouldn't take off on my own, but since this is how we spent our honeymoon, and how we're spending this year's anniversary, I think (hope) he'd be up for it.

Lori,
I'm concerned about filling up our limited space with non-photographer attendees. That's not a "no", it's a "let's see". If you want to make your deposit now, I have no problem with that. We can talk about this down the line, OK?

I'd be up for something International as well -- partly to support the DGrinners there (e.g. Gus, we could come down-under), and partly to have another excuse to travel.
For now, I'm excited about Moab next year. This'll be a blast!

Just a fair warning: shootout schedule can be very exhausting (last year in Moab we usually woke up at 3-4am and went to bed around 11pm, that and a long hikes:-), and, for a non-photog, extremely boring and annoying (stopping for "seemingly nothing" 10 times for 10 minutes each over 0.1 mile hike:-).
Proceed at your own risk :wink

Let me clarify further: since you're not paying for your lodging up front, only making a deposit towards it, you can opt to save money by letting me know that you want to save money, and I'll put more of you in one room/cabin. Some may more about saving money than their accommodations, some the other way around. If you let me know your preference, I'll do my best to accommodate it.
Make sense? :D

Please be patient. There is a lot of work to be done in processing all of these registrations, and what with work, family, etc. I'm just not keeping up. I will be caught up on Saturday, and will make sure that all the details for all who have registered are handled by then. I will also start to keep a list of registrations in the first post.

Found dgrin/smugmug too late to participate in the '07 shootout, I've been checking every day this week figuring that with the '07 shootout being complete the '08 announcement would be coming soon. Nightingale and I will be returning also.
The idea of a pre-shoot out get together is very appealing also, as there is so much to see and do in the Moab area that you could spend weeks there as still find new things to see and do.
If anyone else is considering a pre-shootout arrival, keep me and Nightingale in mind as well.:thumb

Granted this trip is a long way off, but I might be willing to host a pre-shoot out. This is a part of the world I know pretty well.
Maybe something starting in New Mexico around Taos (or possibly as far South as Santa Fe) where we visit some of Ansel Adams favorite subjects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Adams_Church_Taos_Pueblo.jpg) then on to Colorado for Mesa Verde National Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa_Verde_National_Park) and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canyons_of_the_Ancients_National_Monument) then on up to Moab, UT.
Normally a 6 hour drive. But for a couple car fulls of dgrinners, more like 4 days. :rofl

We've got a total of 51 interested people, including the pre-registrations.
We've got 30 who have paid their deposit.
We're getting a lot of requests for the King rooms, and I'm going to be giving priority to the couples for those, as one King bed for one person is not nearly as smart as 2 people for one bed. So, if you're married, but have had enough of each other, let me know! :D

David,
Liz and I would be more than happy to bump up to a cabin. Or let me rephrase, Liz would be more than happy, given my propensity for snoring. The extra room would give me some place other than a couch to sleep on. :D

Good grief! You guys are moving fast. I'm very interested--and the location is someplace I've been wanting to get back to (including the Mesa Verde possibility--loved staying there). Gotta check with the wife to see if she has interest (she is well-trained to deal with photograper's foibles). We are pretty flexible on lodging& could make out own arrangements if need be-she has connections. I just wanna go. :uhoh

Room rates:
Just an FYI, the rates in the first post are the book rates, not the discounted rates that we will be getting. The discount isn't ginormous, it's around 10%, depending on the room.

Maybe we could just have a DIY shootout.
I hear rumors, though, that there might be a workshop over there soon. A little bird from Souther CA whispered it in my ear and asked me to be patient.

I can rent a van or SUV if everyone wants to chip in for van and gas. I'll even pick people up from the airport and drop you back off. :wink

Wave is tough because of Permits. This Gentleman (http://www.jacksonbridges.com/Photography/photography.html) is great to work with and knows the Page area very well- he also has access to a lot of places most people do not get to see. We could do a special trip with him through Overland Canyon tours if people are interested.
We could go another route-
Tonto Natural Bridge- Painted Desert- Petrified Forest- Canyon de Chelly
Lots of options! I will be scouring my topo maps and the web :rofl

Yeah, tell me about it. We were trying to get the permit last year. They were gone like in two minutes...
Your local guide idea sound iteresting. And the alternative route sounds great, I always dreamed of getting the sunrise/sunset from the bottom of Canyon De Chelly. Can he get us there? I'm OK with camping a night or two...

I'm starting to think about travel plans, (yes I like to plan ahead:D ) and was looking over the travel recommendations from the most recent trip. I wanted to make sure that with the shorter time frame this coming year (2007 was September 25-30=6 days, 5 nights; 2008 is October 8-11=4 days, 3 nights) that a mid day arrival in Moab on the 8th and mid day departure from Moab on the 11th was the recommended course of action by the "powers that be".
jdryan3
Jan-05-2008, 12:53 AM
Dates: October 8-11, 2008
Travel: Fly to Grand Junction, or other nearby cities (http://redcliffslodge.com/about-the-inn/directions.htm) and then drive to Moab. We will be arranging for shared rides and rental cars, and participants will be splitting the cost of rentals/fuel. There will be information threads posted on travel and cars as the Shootout draws nearer.
Are we there yet? I mean, it is 2008!
OK, seriously though, how do most folks plan on getting there? I, for instance, will probably fly to SLC and drive the 4.5 hours. I can fly to SLC in 4 hours. While Grand Junction is only 2 hours away from Moab, it takes a 6.5 hour flight with a layover. Plus it costs $230 more. And cars will probably be easier to get in SLC.
But if people are wanting to fly into Phoenix or SLC sometime like 10/2 or 10/3 and head off someplace before Arches, I'm very interested.

In the past the first person to speak up about extending the trip has started a new thread to generate interest. You could start a "Pre or Post Moab 2008 Shootout" thread right here in Big Picture. If it takes off, we'll link it to the main announcement thread. :deal

I'm wanting to get my flight squared away soon, and I wanted to know if it was better to plan on arriving the morning of October 8 for shared-ride arranging or the night before (Oct. 7)? Also, will most people be flying out the afternoon of Oct. 11 or the morning of Oct. 12? I wasn't sure what the nights' arrangement was at the hotel. :deal Any insight?
Here are my initial observations based on some flight searches and other comments. Grand Junction is about 2 hours from Moab, Salt Lake City is about 4. Flying into Salt Lake City from the Baltimore/Washington airports (I'm out in Hagerstown so all 3 are about equal for me) gives me many more options as far as arrival and departure times.
As an example I can fly out of Baltimore, and be in Moab by about 7:30 on the the 7th (I want to be there by lunch time on the 8th, and there are no flights from the Washington area arriving on the 8th that make that a possibility from either Grand Junction or Salt Lake City) with either a 2 hour drive from Grand Junction or a 4 hour drive from Salt Lake City. I'm also thinking that the larger size of Salt Lake City will make rental cars etc. easier to get.
On the return side in a post here (http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=717757&postcount=145) DavidTO states that the hotels reservation includes the 11th, with checkout on the 12th, so I'm looking to leave sometime on the 12th. If I'm flying out of Salt Lake City I can get a cost competitive flight that allows me stay in Moab until 10:30 or so that morning. If I fly out of Grand Junction, unless I want to spend an extra 50% on airfare I'm looking at having to be out of Moab by around 9:00 am to catch a flight in Grand Junction.
I was looking a flight information a few weeks ago, maybe a little more, and decided to hold off since SouthWest hasn't started selling tickets in that time frame yet. According to their website they are supposed to release those tickets on April 17th, and I'm thinking that I'm going to move fairly quickly after that to lock in my travel plans.

I say relax, your over thinking this...
Give yourself some extra time to check out the southwest; and if you want the cheapest airfare the day to fly is Tuesdays (not sure why). So if you want the cheapest airfare, fly into Salt Lake City on the 7th, stay the night there have a nice dinner, then drive to Moab the next morning abd spend a couple days checking out the Southwest and and fly out of Salt Lake city on 14th. :D

Mmm kay...you're a good trip planner...I have 10 week days + week ends...and if needed 2 extra days I can "spend". I need to spend three days in Vegas, but the rest is FREE!!! Do we have our preshoot planned? (I know...preshoot thread...) I probably won't be able to travel to or from MD with anyone since I'm arriving SOMEWHERE earlier and leaving later. *sniff*
I can't wait though. That calculator says 139 days, REALLY? HolyMoly.

I didn't realize quite a few MD folks were going out there. I'm in Alexandria, but I'll sometimes fly out of BWI for the cheaper fare. Wouldn't mind coordinating flights, but I'm more concerned with the drive after arrival. :D The first post in this thread mentions arranging carpools, but I wasn't sure how that worked since this is my first one of these. :clap
So it looks like no hotel in Moab for night of the 7th, but we do have it the night of the 11th. Helpful to know. :thumb

So I just joined SM (I haven't even uploaded pictures yet) and boom I find out about this shoot. It says that you are full, what exactly does that mean? By that I mean, I actually am building a cabin (the LizardRanch) just a stone's throw from the Red Cliffs lodge, so it's not like I need lodging or even meals. I don't know if I can make it down for the whole thing but I would like to attend some of the workshops if I could. As a semi-local I know a few places to take pictures off the tourist track (the Golden Staircase and Parriot Mesa can be hiked from Red Cliffs), so even if I can't attend a seminar I wouldn't mind giving suggestion/help as to what there is to do/see.
So is there a chance on attending any of this or should I put my name on the waitlist and see?
Thanks,

anwmn1,
Wow that really depends. It's a big country out here. The two places I mentioned above have 360 views so it's your call, but both of them are strenuous hikes. One thing that you really need to consider is will you be driving to the spot or hiking, and if hiking, how strenuous can you deal with. October is the best time of year to be here, but be aware that this is also the absolute peak mountain biking season as well, this may present some great opportunities to photograph bikers (Slickrock Trail, Gymnasium, etc.) but may spoil others. I generally prefer mornings as the haze can really build up throughout the day, and don't worry if you are not a hiker, there are billions of spots that you can take incredible pictures from right from your car (the best picture of a Cottonwood I've ever taken was right on the bridge over Courthouse wash while driving my girlfreinds parents through Arches)

Ara &Spirit,
I haven't been around Moab for the last few months so I haven't spotted you in town. I have been in and out of Moab a lot. Was first there in the early 80's (pre mountain bike era). Check out the Popular Place Pub, I helped Craig refurbish the place after it burned down but don't hang out there much since Craig and Sheron left the business.
I looked at your website a bit and it seems you have hit some good areas. You should also checkout Onion Creek road and drive up to the ranch. This is one of my favorite road trips and I mountain bike this a lot in the summer (be aware though there are half a dozen stream crossings, but you can do them even in a Cadillac). Great pictures up that road, and also at Fisher Towers (but that is an advanced beginner hike). Both Onion Creek and Fisher Towers are just a few miles from Red Cliffs lodge (much closer than Arches). Also another MUST DO drive, if you are around when the snow melts) is the La Salle loop road (go in from Castle Valley rather than Moab, more dramatic that way) They don't plow it so check with one of the mountain bike or outdoor shops to find out if it is passable. It will be great in October, aspens changing color, snow possible, all looking down on what we lovingly refer to as the "stinking desert" Another good thing to check out, believe it or not is the town dump. It has the best view of the La Sal mountiains looking over nice redrock fins to snow covered mountains. The Moab dump came in second in a competition for the worlds most scenic dumps. I believe Kauai came in first but I think Moab was robbed. It really is an incredible site.
And if all that beautiful natural scenery is getting you down, check out Tom Tom's VW museum. I'ts actually a junk yard for VWs, but Tom and the yard are two unforgettable characters in Moab. The place is like from a hollywood movie, crusty old codger with lots of stories to tell. I haven't seen Tom in ages, not since I sold my VW. I'm hoping he is still around, don't miss a chance to see a western legend and (I hestitate to call it) the junkyard, it is more of a sculpture in previously used automobile components.
There is no other place on earth like Moab.

Nothing is scheduled yet, that's still a work in progress. Generally the first day is a loose get together. Plan on the serious schmoozing and strategizing happening in the late afternoon/early evening.
Last day there might be something in the morning, but not much really, at least officially.

Clear? The first day does something like this:
Arrive at the hotel and find Andy. Andy proceeds to take a nap.
You meet a bunch of people and get to know their names. Andy comes back and eats lunch. Andy takes another nap.
You've forgotten everyone's name but know they are in the group because they have red hats on. Andy wakes up and checks more people in.
Time for dinner and you've learned enough about who you are rooming with to know you should buy some earplugs. Andy takes another nap.
Everyone mills around the lounge area. Andy wakes up. Mac people on one side, PC on the other. You've said "and what's your name again?" about 1200 times and still can't remember anyone's name.
A plan is made for the morning and everyone dispurses. Somehow Andy is still tired and goes to sleep.
You get to your room just in time for your roomate to start snoring and you've forgotten his name and the earplugs.
You have to get up in 4 hours for a sunrise shoot and finally realized what you've gotten yourself into.
Sound about right?

Travel: Fly to Grand Junction, or other nearby cities (http://redcliffslodge.com/about-the-inn/directions.htm) and then drive to Moab. We will be arranging for shared rides and rental cars, and participants will be splitting the cost of rentals/fuel. There will be information threads posted on travel and cars as the Shootout draws nearer.
My wife is "encouraging" me to hurry up and make my reservations before airfare gets any more expensive, so I can't procrastinate much longer. Have any travel details been posted that I missed?
I'm trying to decide whether to fly into Salt Lake City (SLC) or Grand Junction (GJT). Either choice will likely require me to rent a car to get to Moab. Car rental in Grand Junction appears to be crazy expensive ($100/day versus $25/day), so at the moment I'm leaning pretty strongly towards SLC. Anyone else planning to fly into SLC on 10/8 and return from SLC on 10/12, who'd like to split transportation costs to/from Moab?
The above mention of shared rides and rental cars being arranged makes me wonder if there's already a plan of some sort for this. No sense everyone renting cars to drive to Moab if more cars are being rented for local travel.

:(: Now that's just not fair. I was really looking forward to picking your brains about your storm chasing abilities!

It's the same picture of the arch before the collapse, but the National Park Service news release shows both a before and after photo:

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.
Good luck on the recovery Dave. You better not punk out and let a little knee surgery stop you from attending.

OMG, Davev! You are one of the toughest guys I know, (and not just to look at :rofl ) so I am sure you can manage a 6 week recovery - but, but, but was this in the plan?
I sure hope everything goes well and that you recover quickly enough to go on the shootout. In the meantime, take it easy on Kate, okay?!!
Best wishes Davev!!!!

Ann, I think you got it reversed. Every time Davev acts up Kate does something to his IV.

She says it helps calm him down but all I notice are the weird faces he makes and his plea for a doctor followed by a cry for a good lawyer.

Thanks for the well wishes guys.
This wasn't really in the plan, but I knew that I was going to need a new knee someday.
It's amazing how fast someday got here.:D
Kate and I will be there, even if I end up just shooting from near the truck.
I was hoping to have had this done in July, but the doctor was busy so it happened when it did.
At least we aren't going across any international borders this year.
With all the drugs I'll be carrying, I'd be in jail for a long time.
Thanks again, and see ya soon.

I remember talking about this at dinner when you guys came to DC. As that waiter said (and my own mother who has had both replaced) once you get it done you're so much happier. It may not seem all that great the first couple of days when they're making you stand and walk right away, but once it heels...woo wee!
Here's hoping for a speedy and uneventful recovery!:thumb

All the Best Dave, my mother also had a knee replacement this year.
She had a bit of trouble only for the first couple of weeks, but now she's doing just great.
My ribs are still not mended since I broke them 6 weeks ago,
I still haven't attempted to put a backpack on, I'll just cut back on luggage and camera gear if things are still bothering me when the time comes.
Got 6 weeks up my sleeve.
Looking forward to seeing you folks again soon.
All the Best Dave :thumb .... Skippy :D

Skippy, I'm so sorry to hear about your ribs.
If we have to, we'll make Nick be your sherpa. He's good at it.:D
If you can whittle down your equipment, I have a KATA waist pack that you could use. It works pretty well.
It made the trip with me to Angel's Landing in Zion.
It can hold up to 3 lenses, or a camera body with 2 lenses, spare batteries, memory cards, and maybe even a filter.
I'll have it along with me, if you need it, just say the word.
It looks like this:

Ouch, Maxine, sorry to hear that. :cry
Luckily, as you remember from our 2006 trip, the whole Arches/Canyonlands area is fairly accessible by car, I don't expect long exhausting hikes with large altitude gain.
Get better, and see you soon:-) :thumb

Exactly my point. Everyone has a breaking point NIck, and ya know, we gals just wait for those vulnerable moments to make amends (take revenge?:D ). I'm just saying that ole Davev better not get outta hand or, well, we've seen the IV bag photo now haven't we!

Well, I feel like a chump! Broken ribs can't stop skippy, and a new knee won't prevent Davev from going on the shootout, but my kid has stopped me :cry
Sigh - my oldest son's soccer team won the provincial championship today. Hurray! This is their last year of youth soccer and a great accomplishment and finale to their youth! Sadly, nationals are the same week as the shootout, in Ontario. I cannot be both places at the same time, and those that know me know I am a soccer mom.........
Hopefully, fingers crossed, I will make another shootout! Have a blast everyone, and have a 'Polygamists Pilsner' on me!

Those darn kids screw up everything.
Although we don't get to see our favorite Canadian, we're glad the kid's team won.
Congratulate the kid from Kate and I, and we'll see you at some later date.
How many more of your kids are in soccer?
I hope there not as good as their brother.:D
