I have 6 threads up with images I'd really appreciate some input on from the pros.

6 of the 9 posts over the past 5 days have had 579 hits with only 47 comments (8%) and only 1 from a moderator. So, please take a look when you have time; I'd really like to know your thoughts. Thanks.

Angelo,maybe your putting too many images up for comment. Perhaps just put up a couple and work with those for a few days.Bump it back up and press that your looking for comments etc.
Maybe we can signal in the title that "this one is looking for comments" with a (*) or such.
Personally,I post just to share,if someone comments thats fine,if not thats ok with me also.
Just my nickels worth.

But, just to 'up-front', I am not a *pro* nor am I an expert.

AND...

I used to be quite active at an online phot-critique site and spent a lot of time viewing pics and commenting. I'm not really active there anymore for a number of reasons but I did learn a thing or two.

There are basically two types of critiqueing (sp?) of pics that I've seen-

1. Just about anything is a "Great Shot!" and "Well Done!" and "Beautiful Colors!" etc. People sometimes really don't care to hear what others think of their shot, they like 'em just fine thank you. Or they are only sharing as one might show a few snaps to friends or family at a get-together. There is *nothing* wrong with this at all. (I rarely comment on this type of pic though-not to be mean or 'elitist' or anything, I look for something that interests me or moves me...).

2. A *solicited* critique based on the viewers objective understanding of 'photography' and the viewers subjective likes and dislikes.

I try to maintain a balance of both, giving both postive and negative feedback where *I* fell it is justified. A lot of this depends on why the shot was posted AND if the poster really WANTS honest critique.

Some people just like to put pics up-and that is fine, others put pics up because they REALLY want to hear what others think of them. Since you have asked for opinions-I will give mine but only in the context of what I've said above.

I hope that's 'OK'.

Angelo-remember never let another artist *poke* you in the eye (your artistic eye), and never put your fingers in your ears!

This explains a lot. I've not been able to keep up with this site for a few weeks now. I used to be able to follow all new posts & felt more connected to the people. Now I just wander around with no real purpose & then leave...

You never did post links, so I decided to look for them myself tonight. 5 of the 6 threads you have listed here are in the photo contest forum for the current challenge.

When I go through that forum, I look for multiple posts from one person. Right now, there are 6 from you. I'm not going to go through and leave comments on all 6, or any for that matter. Why would I want to critique a photo that you have already moved aside for something different? I could be a real waste of time for a lot of people.

My advice, keep it down to 1 thread. You'll get a lot more focused responses as people follow you through your though process & watch the progression. Right now, it looks like your throwing everything against the wall & seeing what sticks.

Just my 2 cents.

DKapp I don't know how to "link" to threads, sorry, and I may have posted too many pictures in the past week and I understand your criticism, (harsh as it may have been :cry ), so I will now limit myself to one per forum.

I am guilty of some of the "well done" comments but only because I am not technically proficient enough to comment on EXIF details. I always try to comment as a means of encouragement and acknowledgement for the effort a fellow Dgrinner has shown. As a Creative Director I hope I can offer meaningful insight to a peer on content and step aside leaving technical input to those better qualified. My own "eye" will come as I get more comfortable handling my camera.

I came here and I post because I want to learn more about the technical aspects of photography not for ego stroking. I assumed most of that form of technical support input was coming from moderators. You're correct, We don't necessarily need "ugly vase" or "cute kitty" type comments.

I have posted several pictures that were done for fun or as a means of replying to another thread, which I didn't ask for nor expect comment on. I think many here do that occassionally.

I think the spirit of this original post was misunderstood so please accept my apologies. A mod is invited to close it if deemed appropriate.

thanks for posting. you should know that not all the moderators are professionals. in fact, the majority of the moderators are devoted amateurs, excellent photographers in their own right, yes, but do not earn their primary incomes from photography. nor from dgrin, for that matter :lol3

one common thing we all have as a bond is a love for photography, and for dgrin. our job as moderators is to ensure the smoothness of the forums, help n00bs out, and moderate threads where appropriate (say, if a poster put up x-rated material or spam). our responsibility to comment, critique, help out is no more and no less than everyone else here at dgrin.... meaning, that everyone should be giving to others as much as they expect to get. this is what i meant about my posting above, regarding "lurkers getting off that bench :D "

anyhow, keep posting, and commenting.

It would be a big mistake to assume that as a mod we're any more technically qualified than you (well, me anyway :rofl).

We all try to comment and help on as many posts as possible but that's because we're enthusiastic dgrin members & not because we're moderators. Our main job as a mod (as I see it) is to ensure that DGrin is a harmonious and pleasant place to learn about photography and display pictures. That involves reading an ever increasing amount of posts and consumes a fair amount of time, so with the best will in the world we can't get close to commenting on all of the pictures displayed. :D

That's why, if folks ask for feedback, I try to be honest about what I see and feel. If they don't ask for feedback, and I think the shot has problems, I tend not to comment.

The exceptions are for newcomers, who I try to encourage. And for shots that I really like.

I didn't mean for my post to come off so harsh. Thats the problem w/ forums & perceived tone on some replies. I'm just a short, to the point kind of guy. I guess you could say I'm the product of an industry full of liars & BS. My job was to cut through it all, eliminate excuses & get the job done.

I'd say keep posting as you have been. My suggestion to one thread was just for the challenges. It makes it easier for us as the viewer to follow your work & entry. I think it was a rule some time ago for just 1 thread per person, but that seems to have been dropped. Maybe with all the new activity Andy will bring it back. That should make life easier.

I didn't comment on any of your challenge entries, but I hope that my comments to your other posts were helpful. The post processing can make or break a photo. I think your going in the right direction.

As far as getting replies from mods, its over rated. Their just guys like everyone else. No superheros here.
