Hi Patrick -

It's a good, clean shot of the statue, but for me it lacks punch and singularity. It's like many shots, I would imagine, of the same subject. At least part of it is the lighting - pretty regular. The "serenity" of evening or morning light would help make it different, IMO. I'm also wondering how it might be in a dramatic, contrasty Black & White conversion. There are some different tones to it that might translate well in B&W. I also see no reason not to have the entire head, but that's a fine point, I think.

I did take a look at some of your gallery, and for some reason the close-up shot of the Buddha's hands has more impact. Though, again, lighting is everything. And you have some other good shots in there that I enjoyed seeing.

Let me say you were very lucky to have such a clear day in Kamakura for a photo shoot with Daibutsu http://www.vxphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/2409336#126303217 This is what it normally looks like... overcast gray, cloudy sky... Any way nice capture, I think it would be better with some more contrast... The angle as a close up of the head is unusual because you can see the top of his head... so you must have been pretty far away using a long lens to get this kind of shot... I like it, although I agree with Harlan that the hands are more dramatic...

I lived in Yokohama Japan with my family from 2000 to 2004
