AMA Grand National Dirt Track is motorcycle racings, in my opinion, in some ways, depending who you ask, considering all the facts, equivalent to auto racings NASCAR. Maybe not but it doesn't really matter. At the end of the season, somebody wins a #1 plate, so right there I shoot my own argument out the window becasue in NASCAR even though you win you keep the same number on your car. Unless your step mother owns the car then you have to give it up. But anyway, Dirt Track is run on..dirt tracks, usually 1/2 mile and miles. The tracks are not paved, hence the dirt track is in fact acurate. Rather than watch Bill Belichick the cheater on NBC tonight I'm goign to post some pictures form last nights round 17 of 18 of the AMA's Grand NAtional series held in Monticello NY on a horse track, that just happend to be dirt. Armed with my new D40 and my trust Canon A95 I ventured up to Sullivan County to see why people would want to spend a day running a motorcycle with no front brake at high speeds into corners with less than ideal traction. The first thing I noticed was that my sons 300 zoom Nikon lens did not work with the D40's autofocus. no problem I got game. However, shooting dirt track is no easy task, ecspecially after the sun goes down if you don't know your camera. But we do what we can and let the chips fall where they may. I uploaded only oics today I want to comment on so this may be a long thread. It just truns left every 1/4 mile.

We'll try to keep these in somewhat of the order they were taken. We got there at 4 pm, practice was still going on. First lesson learned is know the event. If I'd have gotten there a few hours earlier I could have had hours of shooting in strong sunlight but again, we do our best.

Welcome to Monticello Raceway. I haadn't been there since the first Leonard/duran fight back when if you wanted to see fights like that you went to a place like a horse track. No mas!

Oh well out of sequence already, taken closer to 6pm. :scratch

But I wanted to post this one first. :D

ok turn the clock back to 4pm and some shots from the practice sessions. entering turn 1 of 4 at speed.

great shots? no. but it was a learnign experience.

Last years #1 plate winner and likely to repeat in 2007 Kenny Coolbeth.

pretty hard to describe this. they come flying down the straight and start to lay it down before they even enter the turn. by the time they are in the turn it is just man (or woman) against machine and the track. when it all goes right it is pure poetry in motion. they speeds they carry on the straights on this track were probably in the 80-90 mph range. they don't brake, they just pitch it in and turn with the throttle.

ps. these pics look better bigger but only large will fit here.

once practice was over you were allowed into the pits. If I had bought the $30 ticket instead of the $25 ticket I could have been in the pits during practice which would have allowed me to get good shots exiting turn 4, the final turn before the front straight. Keep in ind this is only an oval track, 5/8 mile. but no matter once in the pits I thoroughly enjoyed checking out the bikes. it was kind of hard not to.

Chris Carr won the Grand National Championship #1 plate 7 times. Thats why he gets a big truck. but to be honest I think the Canon got a better shot.

taken maybe an hour apart, maybe the Nikon was dealing with more "shaded light".

Both taken on Auto.

Back to somewhat prope order as I wandered thru the pits. The Canon didn't come out for awhile but I wanted to compare.

Smokin Joe Kopp's #3 Harleys. Smokin Joe actually won the #1 plate in 2000 despite all of the Y2K computer glitches that never materialized to distract him.

Dirt Track used to be a Harley only game, until the British came along in the 50's, but since they give all their money to the queen and prince charles for reasons nobody can seem to explain, BSA and Triumph went out of business in the 70's and then it was Harely only again till Honda got bored and won it back to back in the 80's and then left dirt track for HArley to fight Harely for, until now that we actually have Suzuki's and Yamaha's and even an Aprilia. Nore information then you need to know but its my thread not yours so deal with it.

quite a few of the riders were signing free mini posters of themselves for the fans. a lot of the riders are young, and small. as the Team Owner of 800 Fast Hog told me, weight is horespower. at this level every bit helps.

24-0 Patriots. As much as I don't like Bill Belichick I like Norv Turner less.

:deal

for future reference you can see his left foot has what they call a hot shoe on it. since they turn left, they use the left foot as an outrigger in the turns. they all wear it and its pretty neat hearing a one legged clang as they walk around.

the hot shoe fits over the regular boot.

you can buy one if you're in the market.

I think the reason the first shot had so many shadows was a vehicle might have been there. I found this one uncluttered on the second pass. It really looks better bigger but still not as crisp as I'd like. I think manual focus is definitely an option in the future for non action shots.

thanks for all the comments and encouragement! to answer a few of the questions.

1. the reason they don't pave the tracks, is that if they did, the dirt track tires would squeal and make screeching noises in the corners and on the straights at higher speeds would actually whine. while Harley Davidsons have long been known for their uncanny life saving abilities by virtue of their loud pipes, nobody likes to listen to screeching and whining.

2. Why didn't Chris Carr win an 8th title? He claimed once the AMA pulled the claiming rule he could no longer compete without the BMW's being available.

3. What was Smokin Joe Kopp smoking? You'd have to ask him Jay.

OK moving right along. Cue up All the Young Dudes if it helps, I am.

Is that concrete all around?

Right then.

Trick photo, and none of you caught the trick. Well it really wasn't a trick but there was a bit of subtle subtrefuge, or is it subtreflug.

What. Ever. I wanted to do this for years.

So what is the trick in this picture friends? You there yes, you in the glasses. Do you know?

yes one of the boys. I really like the solid heat shield on the pipes. and like I said earlier, the sharp eye will notice on the right side of the handlebar there is no front brake lever, because these bikes have no front brakes. brakes are for slowing down. maybe on asphalt but not on dirt track. these boys come to ride not pose.

I really like the the paint on Nicholes bike too. the sharp eye will note her name on the seat. :lust

Nichole Cheza. 5'1" 115 pounds and all of 20 years old. In June. :huh

What can you say. I saw her heat and she ran a very respectalbe 3rd. She didn't do good in the Main Event but I don't think it was from lack of trying. I know some pretty manly men who wouldn't get on a bike with no front brake on a chilly saturday night in the Catskills and ride it 90 mph into a corner with 20 or so other riders with no front brakes and trying to win a race being their primary idea.

lifted from her website.

Racers who like to take 750 Harleys burning racing fuel with half the brakes of normal bikes and run them up to 90mph or so on dirt and throw it sideways into a turn.

Sorry I missed all this as you were posting 'em up. Teaches me to go away for the weekend . . .

I almost went to this race, actually. Had media credentials and everything. But it was family-vacation weekend.

When I was at Hagerstown in July Sammy Sabedra (#11a, Expert Twins) was telling me he really looks forward to the NY round--it's a wide, fast cushion track.

yo. you missed a good one but I'm looking forward to yours from the coming weekend. but I believe this was the first year at Monticello?

anyway I've got some more and I aim to post em.

once the races started it was pretty much dark. I had "lingered" in the pits and at 7pm they stopped open access to the pits but being there already nobody noticed my intrusion.

but the important thing was I had a birds eye view at turn one. track lights were on. I was armed with a DSLR and finally ready to unleash the full power of my new toy as opposed to a point and shoot.

sports setting. on.

focus check. roger.

the pack roared into turn one. and cinders flew as they exited turn 2.

as one they flew down the back straight and dove like men possessed into turn 3.

and just like that the pack passed by leaving me somewhat puzzled and bewildered. oops. I instantly knew that I was not ready to shoot on a "sports" setting. daytime? yes. nighttime at a distance under questionable lighting? no way.

but we do what we can. I wasn't in the mood to break out the directions and start experimenting. maybe even ask them to run a few more laps in each heat so I could prefect my adjustments.

I took a few more that looked like that. I switched to manual and opened the F stop and tried a faster shutter and got a few pics that looked like the inside of a can black paint. with the lid on. :dunno

The only shooting modes you need: Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, & Manual. Forget the rest are there. :D

Shooting flat-track at night is difficult and places significant demands on the camera (and photographer!). Did you bump the ISO up to 800 (or higher)?

Not to hijack, or to suggest I have it figured out, but here a couple of mine from Hagerstown:

Monticello is a "cushion" track, meaning it has a loose surface. The joke is that you don't need a throttle, just an on/off switch. :D

another shot I'm not happy with. the camera seems to have relegated the sky to pure white. It wasn't.

http://nachtflug.smugmug.com/photos/196318283-S.jpgYou tossed out quite a few questions here, but this one I'll tackle...

Your eye has much wider dynamic range than your camera. When you look at that scene with your eye, you see a light blue sky (highlights) and can still make out details in the bike etc (shadows). You know that little ruler thing on your camera LCD? Goes from -2 to +2? That is the range of your camera, about 4 stops (0 +/- 2). You told your camera that you wanted the bike to be at 0 (this is effected by metering mode, an advanced topic). In that light, the "light blue sky" was definitely more than 2 stops worth of light away from the dark bike, so therefore its full white. On your camera sensor, anything more than +2 comes out full white and anything less than -2 is black. Few places I've read say your eye is good for at least twice the range of your typical camera, so let's say the sky was +4, your eye would still see a color there.

Make sense? :D

Ive got one more batch to post from this event and then we can raise the checkered flag. given all the 2 wheeled activity lately I've decided to have a little contest for part of the intermission. I came across this picture today and the contest is, whoever can name the most people in it will win a secret prize.

the contest will close in 48 hours.

3-2-1..go.Doug Henry (wheelchair), flanked by Valentino Rossi (left) and Colin Edwards (right).

there are the obvious ones, that's all i got.

Not too obvious, apparently. :evil That's Wayne Rainey in the chair.

Others: Aaron Gobert, Rich Oliver, Jamie Hacking, Ago, Randy Mamola, Kel Carruthers, Kenny Roberts, Henry Wiles, Chad Reed, Rossi, Rainey, Edwards, and Jamie James. I think that may be Eddie Lawson's head obscured in the back row. I don't know the rest. :cry

we have a winner!. I'd like to thank all of the contestants, (both of you), and the winner of the secret prize is HarveyMushman. A man who obviously knows his new school Yamaha road racing, but is obviously clueless on old school Yamaha motocross.

never the less he won fair and square in a very hotly contested contest.

and here is your SECRET PRIZE!

for his efforts Harvery Mushman will receive one hot date with one hot babe at the restaurant of her choice. your dream date will arrive in style and chaufer you around in this custom mercedes benz. contest rules do apply and this is a DINNER date only and desert will be served by a waiter so before you get any fresh ideas just forget about it.

what you get if you should wangle a second date is strictly your buisness.

so here she is. your dream date secret prize and congratulations Harvey Mushman.

:clap :bow :deal :lust :D

:thumb Cool thread, Flug. Your, um, style, is probably puzzling folks who haven't been exposed to your act. :lol3

The reason your squatting shot looks more interesting is because you put the camera at a height we don't usually see things from. So it becomes different and therefore interesting. It's often a good idea not to shoot from the ordinary standing position, which is familiar and boring.

You need to figure out how to increase your shutter speed, so you can get more action shots in low light. It's just a technique.

Love the thread.

Dinner with a lovely lady! :clap And she looks to be the quiet, unassuming type, probably not at all taken by fancy doctor types. :D
