View Full Version : Just See!

I was reminded of something very important by my 11 year old daughter today. Had my camera on a hike today when she asked me it she could borrow it to take some shots -- "sure", I said - happy that she was interested in photography.
I guessed that she might not get things quite right on this camera with so many knobs and dials... but what the hell.
So she took about a dozen photos. Of these, at least half were absolutely gorgeous shots of ordinary items - like the photo shown here. She saw them for what they were, beautiful everyday things, and just pressed the button.
#1 daughter - thanks for reminding me to forget about the knobs and dial, levels and zones, DOF and bokeh... and just SEE.

Hi Pyanez,
I'm not seeing any images here (assuming you meant to post one), but it sounds like a good lesson!

Hi Pyanez,

maybe it was on purpose...."just see" was hte thread title and he talks about forgetting all the knobs, dials, etc...
now he's really really emphasizing it by not providing pictures.
ok..now i'm done over analyzing things. :scratch

I have no problem seeing the images.
Wonderful work, I probably couldn't photograph a baseball that well if I tried! Love the exposure, the colors, the beautiful grimey texture of the ball. Frame them and hang them on her wall and give her a big kiss!
And now you know what to get her for that next gift-giving occasion! :D

I don't see the images either, unless I copy and paste the links embedded in the post. The images reside on PBase and I think that is related to the problem.
I love the composition of the second image. Truly exquisite.

I am not the OP, I did not post these images. But I do see them in the post. Strange that I am the only person who can see them.

It look like the PBase gallery is set to the eqivalent of smugmug's "external liks off" If you chase down one the of links in the post and paste it into your browser it will fix it.
Those two shots are clear examples of the distinction bewteen taking the picture of something and creating an image. For most of us it is easy to slip into pure representation rather than thinking about the entire frame. I know that framing doesn't come naturally to me; rather I need to think about it.
As for the technical aspects of the camera, it is important to remember that they are all in support of capturing what you see whether what you see is in your head or in the world. The eye can see many things that the camera can't capture without help. That's where camera settings come in.

But that wouldn't explain why I can see it. I don't have a Pbase account or any other affiliation with Pbase, so then I shouldn't be able to see it either if external links were off.
I wonder if the problem is browser specific? When I first viewed the thread I was using Firefox. The next time was in IE (launched from my e-mail), and maybe the images were already cached in my browser?
Very strange...:scratch

I had to right click, properties, copy the link into a new window and open. After I did that I can now see them in the thread.
She did a good job for her first time out! :thumb

pyanez,
I hope you don't mind, but since many folks can't see the images I am providing the links below. I will remove if you wish.

Wow, that is so strange that so many folks can't see the images. They are as plain as day the moment I open this thread. Just using IE as the browser with no problems at all.
I like your daughter's instinct!

I'm using IE v6, and noticed that by right-clicking on the "red x's" I get an option "Show Picture". When I select it, the picture becomes visible in the post.
Hey....I think I learned something today. :clap

P.P.S. If you are using Firefox, after you click on a link in the above message, look at the top of the FireFox window and see the link address. Just to the right of that is a green arrow/triangle. Click on the green arrow and the image may appear.

The little green arrow, d'uh!
But that worked when I got the "forbidden" message in my browser window. Thank you for the specific directions.
Great photos, that is one neat photographic grunge baseball!
