I like the head shot. The eyes make the connection for me.

Have you thought about increasing the saturation to bring out the color of the
coat? Maybe adjust the level/curve a bit and then sharpen too?

post processing is my achilles heel ( so is spelling aparently ) . I have no understanding about post processing. im lucky enough to be able to find the shutter release - but i will try to develop my skills and try what you suggest.

I'm laughing with you on this one bud :rofl My PS skills suck. I am trying
to 'fix' a shot from today that I'm not having much luck with--never mind I
shot it right into the sun :D

Windoze, I'm in love with the second shot you posted. The first is great...but the second one, his expression is priceless and the color is superb! Makes me wanna drive 2 1/2 hrs to get to the closest zoo (well, we have an icky one close by but you have to shoot through chain link, ugh).
Anyway, just wanted to say LOVELY!
