There's quite a lot of background to this picture, but I wonder how it holds
up on its own merits (or lack thereof).

I think it's a delightful shot. My first reaction was to complain about the desaturation, but on second thought that isn't really fair. The shot is working as is. It isn't necessarily going to be improved by bolder color. I could complain about the unnatural lighting, the slightly blown-out face of the foreground kid, but those would be generic technical critiques which ignore the effectiveness of the image you have made.
There is just one little thing: the foreground kid's hands are in shadow which calls too much attention to the fill lighting. I'd see what I could do about correcting that.

You don't have to believe me, if you don't want to, but I knew that you,
Gary, would call attention to that. I swear! :)
I appreciate and value you comments, of course.

Is it because I'm a cruel taskmaster?
No, it's because you have a great eye. And there's nothing cruel about
your assessments, so if you're trying for the "cruel taskmaster" job you'll
have to throw a few more "crap", "sucks" and "sell your camera"s around,
but I don't see you going down that path. :)
Thanks for your great work in TWP.

I very much like composition on this shot. I don't particulary care for big difference in lighting. Unless you wanted this way. Boy's face almost look unnatural with such white light compared to the rest of the shot. Just MHO :D

Thanks, Marina. I'll try to PP a version which takes both yours and Gary's
suggestions into account and post it in the before and after thread.
