View Full Version : Assignment #51: Eye of Beholder

You would think that, given my history with numbers, this time we would have to shoot at exactly 51mm, 1/51 sec, ISO 51, having the camera exactly 51 inch (or cm, or meter) from the subject? Nah... :lol3
This week we're going to shoot the eyes! Pet, animals, people - all would do.
The idea is to get an eye to fill as large part of the frame as possible. Watch for your own (and camera's) reflection - you may or may not like how it looks.
One eye per shot please.
Basic EXIF (aperture, speed, focal length, ISO) is required, a link to the complete exif is appreciated.
For the rest of the rules, index, etc. please refer to this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).

Is all this any good ? :D

Very creative usage of the reversed kit lens and nice out of the box thinking! :clap However, the real - live - eye is a bit more challenging to shoot, so why don't we try to get that one, too :wink :deal

I have a correction to make.
I wrote that the the 2 last pictures were from "Fiji Island eye from an wooden statue".
It is not true because they belong to Kenian's Massai shepherd wooden statue, 35 cms height.
A detail. :thumb

I must say, it looks a bit oof. Any eye (a real one) is a challenging object to photograph, I would suggest closing aperture a bit, otherwise you most likely going to miss it, even if by a hair...:deal

That little dog surely was a difficult object to photograph. He'd never sit still long enough to get a good shot.:bash I'll give it another try.

Crank up ISO :-) Use a little flash, too, or shoot from the window. It will create a nice catchligh and will make focusing easier!

I was visiting my grandma at a rehab center and they have a miniature horse outside. I remembered the assignment this week, so I took two shots at it. I had my 50mm on at the time and the horse wouldn't let me get too close, so this is a crop. I'll have to have another attempt at it :)

Oh man, I haven't done an assignment in so long, but my cat definitely has the coolest eyes (they're green *and* yellow) so when I get home from class tonight, she's totally my target... I have some eye pics of her before the assignment date, but they don't count....so I'll be back when the kitty is near my lens later :)

My first posting in the Assignment. My girl's brown eye taken by a window with diffused off camera flash. I don't have any macro lens so had to use an old +4 close-up filter (back from the days of film SLR Canon A-1). Still had to crop off about 66% (from 3504x2336 to 2016x1344) then resized to 800x533.

I like the reflection you got... I didn't appreciate it as much until I tried it myself :) It wasn't easy for me to get a recognizable, clear reflection. Yours looks very clear. Good job
P.S. For those of you watching the monthly assignment thread... give me a bottle to shoot though and I can get all kinds of reflections! :P

Thanks. I think the trick is to have your subject inside looking out at a bright scene. My daughter was 3 feet from a window but the outside light was fading fast so I had to use off-camera flash.

Welcome to Dgrin Academy!
Nice entry, thanks!
One thing I noticed - the image looks very soft and slightly OOF (Out Of Focus). This is probably because you shot wide opn from a close distance and basically focused at the pupil center. DOF (Depth Of Field) is assymetrical, it's usually twice as long furhter from the focus plane that before it:
<)---------[====*========]--------
Legend:
<) camera
---[, ]--- OOF (Out Of Focus) area
[==... ==] DOF (Depth of Field)
[== front focused area
* focus point (target)
==] back focused area
I would suggest to use a longer (telephoto) lens and shoot from a greater distance (thus getting a slightly greater DOF), otherwise focus on the end of the eyelashes.

hi! i really like this picture of the (peacock?) eye but i agree that the focus has to be on the eye or somewhere where the eye is in the same focal plane as the focuspoint. nice try and try to shoot it again if possible :clap
