G'day Guys,
I have been working on a rewrite of the MacUploader for a few months, we are very close to releasing it. But I thought I would put it out here for people to play with.
New features include...
- Hierarchical album/cat/sub-cat menus
- Fully featured album creation/editing screen
- Automatic upload recovery from network interruption
- Support iPhoto Events (previously called Rolls)
- Growl notifications
- Lightroom export integration (instructions (http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/3384286))
I would like to thanks a few dgrinners that helped out with beta testing and insightful feedback...

Update: version 3.0.3
- Added support for SmugVault
- Added support for automatic album creation with iPhoto (enabled in preferences)
- Fixed bug with exporting images from Lightroom, found by jogle.
- Officially renamed the app MacDaddy.
Update: it's officially released...get it here (http://www.smugmug.com/help/macs).
People using 3.0, will need to update manually...I had a bug in my update logic that wasn't working for minor revisions.
If you have any issues, please post them in this thread.
Cheers,
David

Don't get me wrong, Dev did a great and efficient job and we love youz on the Mac, I just wish this benefits 90% of customers instead of 10%.

Any chance of this uploader using your proxy settings from the System Pref's?
I use locations a lot and have different proxys for home, work and direct conections. OSX handles this very nicely and switches them automatically when I change location.
The old uploader was able to make new galleries but would give an error when uploading, the new uploader just tries over and over to make a connection and says "network interruption uploading paused"

1. Reproduced on 2 different Macs: If you maximize the window to full screen and click the Destination Gallery pop-up menu at the bottom of the dialog box, the menu appears way up at the top edge of the screen.
2. Otherwise, seems to work great without the problems seen in the older ones.
3. Don't get me wrong, Dev did a great and efficient job and we love youz on the Mac, I just wish this benefits 90% of customers instead of 10%.
It might be a lot more than 10% real soon now (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9033302).
4. If time devoted to Mac support is an issue, I guess Keychain integration for the login isn't coming soon. No big deal, it would just save a step with each new version.
5. I use Growl for lots of things...nice bonus!

I will see what I can work out.
Does anything work ? Or is it only uploading that doesn't work ?

That's weird, one problem with using large monitors :lol3

I don't believe that devoting time to mac support is the issue, it's rather that it had to be rewritten from scratch. I will add Keychain integration to my list of features to look at for the next release.

Hi David, Just like the last one, I can create a new gallery (which shows up when I go to my smugmug page in a browser) but I can't upload to that gallery or any other.

Hello,
Any chance of Aperture export integration as well. I know there is already a plug-in for Aperture, I just think this would be an improvement on it.

The lightroom integration was something that I did at the very last minute, it was quite simple and straightforward to do.
The main push was to get a working version out...due to issues with the previous versions.
I will download aperture and have a play.

Upon launch I get the following error:
Error
stream had too few bytes
It doesnt seem to be a big deal, I click "OK", and everything works fine. Running 10.4.10 on PowerPC G5.
Another thing, after using the uploader to create a new gallery (works great,) uploads to that gallery do not appear. It seems I must restart the uploader before I can successfully upload to the newly created gallery.
I also tested mpg uploads - they don't work :cry. Mpg files seems to upload fine, but never appear in the gallery. Nothing in the upload log.
Other than that, no problems. Nested gallery menu is great. Nice work.
...and yes, we are the best 10%. What self respecting photog could use windoze? :smooch

So, I spoke too soon.
uploading to new galleries works fine without a restart. It just took a few minutes for the image to appear in the gallery.
mpg upload works as well! Again, it just took a while for the thumbs to appear, and 'process.'
sorry for jumping the gun. all in all a great little uploader. It will be my new default. I'm stoked to have images and mpgs working within the same uploader. :barb

Error
stream had too few bytes
If people are getting this error message, it's an issue related to the com.apple.iApps.plist file, to resolve this follow the step below.
1. Shutdown iPhoto, iTunes etc.
2. Search for com.apple.iApps.plist
3. Make a backup of this file
4. Delete all copies (not including the backed up one)
5. Run iPhoto, the plist file will be recreated.
6. Now run the MacUploader, and the error message should be gone.

Tripods make pretty good platforms, or those nifty bags of rice that you can mold and shape to just about any surface.
Oh, you meant computing platform... uhm, no, not really. ;)
Notice Baldy said, of all customers :)
True, I guess there's a couple hundred of us regular users for every power user, and probably a hundred or so of them for every one of your pro users....
hmm... time for some digging.... ok found a couple versions of the market share numbers, most of them are ~6-9 months out of date, but they all show a trend, and if it is correct, they should have hit 7% market share by now. wow. that's sad. I guess if mac users are "only" 10% of smugmug's user base, then given the share they have of the general market that tells us that mac users know quality, and so more of them tend to favour smug than the other photo sharing sites. :D
Yeah, that's the ticket.

Be careful about assuming market share based on general numbers. The general numbers include office towers ordering semi trucks full of generic PCs. Macs are just a blip there, but in the creative markets, are much higher.
This article (http://photoshopnews.com/2006/10/04/product-upgrades-will-bring-adobe-near-certain-boost/), which is less than a year old, and is relevant to our interests, posits that the Mac may represent up to 40% of Adobe's creative application revenues. Even if you dilute it throughout all of Adobe (much of Adobe revenue comes not from photography, but from Acrobat sold into corporate and government), it still comes out to 20%. The specific market makes a difference, again. (The devil's advocate would point out that Apple used to bring Adobe more than 50% of its revenue back in the early 90s.)
About 20% of Adobe’s total revenue comes from the Macintosh platform, MacMillan says. The rest comes from software for Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT - News) Windows PC operating system. But the Mac share could be about 40% for the creative solution segment of Adobe’s business, he says.
Casually observing home and educational users down at the local coffee shops, one would have to conclude that Apple sells 1 of every 2 laptops. That's not a reliable number either, but shows how specific markets change the numbers dramatically. (Actually, some say Apple now sells more than one of every six laptops (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/08/28/Apple-sells-more-than-one-in-six-laptops_1.html), which works out to 18-20% of that market.) I don't think Smugmug would want to base their assumptions on the generic office-tower diluted market share of 5-7% that everybody quotes, and which may be irrelevant here.

One comment on the Uploader (the actual thread) and one on the market share stuff. For the Uploader I love it! Also, I love that it can disable the screensaver when uploading. One request there -- is it possible to just disable the screensaver while uploading? I often upload overnight or when I'm gone for the day, and I would want the screensaver disabled while it's actually uploading, but then to be re-enabled when it's done uploading but while still open.
As for market share, also keep in mind that it represents the share of new machines sold. But there is a much higher turn around in PCs in terms of how often they are replaced than for Mac owners who tend to replace their machines much less often. I forget the exact numbers which I did read once a long time ago, but it translates once again into a far higher percent of people who actually own Macs than you would get from the market share numbers alone.
Ernie

It's definently working correctly here. Perhaps there's some other application you have that's preventing the machine going to sleep? I know there's a half dozen of them here that will keep mine awake and/or prevent the screen saver from coming on any time they're up and running, even when idle. For some like MythFrontend this is a good thing.

Thanks for the tool.
However, when I try to export from LightRoom, I get a dialog with "debug returned nil", , click Ok, and then the program runs. But, the exported images never show up. I can manually load them from the export directory, and they upload fine. I get the same dialog if I start the app directly.
I've reinstalled the program with the same result.
Ideas?

Same thing here. No other programs running, and I've never had the computer not go to sleep until the uploader.
Maybe a solution would be an option to close the program once the upload is complete?
Otherwise, fantastic program!

I just spent the better part of a couple hours between trips to visit a screaming baby trying to get it to upload a couple of renders. Sadly I swore I had a D&D issue, because it just wasn't registering them into the list. Turns out I was just being an idiot... smugmug doesn't support .bmp. It would have been nice if it told me "You dropped 2 images onto me, I only accepted 0 of them. The reasons were: 1. Non-JPEG/GIF/PNG/MPG 2. Non-JPEG/GIF/PNG/MPG." (text stolen from upload log after I used the old http put method and finally got a meaningful error.) After converting to png in PS they uploaded just fine.

Hey David, is there any way to batch to different galleries in MacUploader? I tried placing files in one gallery, then switching the galleries and put more in, but that didn't work. I'm trying to upload images into multiple galleries. I shoot soccer games and name each gallery after the game that I shot. I my shoot 10 games in a day. It will take me all the next day to sort through and crop and edit them. Then I'm ready for uploading.
Is there any way to do a batch these photos into multiple galleries. It seems that MacUploader is so close to this. If it just remembered each image files gallery setting when you drop them in and saved that info regardless if a new gallery was selected. Then you could drag in more files that go to the newly selected gallery destination.
Example:
Game 1 = 150 photos > gallery:Game 1
Game 2 = 175 photos > gallery:Game 2
325 photos total with two destinations.

Same thing here. No other programs running, and I've never had the computer not go to sleep until the uploader.
Maybe a solution would be an option to close the program once the upload is complete?
Otherwise, fantastic program!
thanks!
Just FYI, I had another repeat of this when I uploaded last night. The only thing different from usual was that I had the uploader open, and the screensaver did not turn on and the computer did not go to sleep even well after the uploads were complete.

When I drag a long list files to the uploader the software rearranges the order and then uploads the files in what appears to be a random order. This is not a problem until something goes wrong - or I have to discontinue uploading for some reason. Then I have to go back and figure out what loaded and what didn't. How can I make them upload in filename order or date taken order?
Thanks
- James
NEVERMIND! -- After using this thing for a while now, I just noticed the "PATH" heading over the file listing. I clicked on it and SHAZAAAM it reordered the files! D'oh!

by clicking the header bar in the file column, the list will be ordered by filename. btw, the MacUploader doesn't actually rearrange the order....that is in fact the order they are receive when u drop them :thumb

Hey guys,, great improvements on the uploader.
A few requests for a future version:
Copied from feature requests:
In the "mac-daddy" mac uploader (the program SmugMug MacUploader), It would be convinient to be able to queue up photos to go in multiple galleries. Maybe in addition to the file column, path and status, there could be a destination gallery tab. That way, when I do overnight uploads (which is pretty much every time I upload since it can take a while), it can continue on to multiple galleries. I can accomplish this by using the universal web based java drag and drop, but this is a cool program that I wish it had the capability.
-also in that program,, when you go to select watermarking or not when creating a gallery, you should be able to select which watermark to use, but I have to use a browser to go online to customize and then change the watermark, but this is inconvinient.
+ recently, I was in the middle of uploading some photos and I accidently moved the photos to a different location on my hardrive and the program quit itself out.. Anyway there can be a "these files in use" message?
Thanks!

G'day Nate,
Thanks for the feedback.
Your first item is something I have been thinking about, I will see if we can come up with something.
Watermarks...previously (before like 2 weeks ago) it wasn't possible to retrieve a list of watermarks from the API, now that I have added that, it will be added to the uploader at some point.
Moving files...I didn't think about that one :lol3
I'll fix it.
Cheers,
David

As long as you're doing feature requests...I'd like to see:
1. A Delete button. I exported some JPEGs from Lightroom and didn't notice that I had the Smugmug uploader set as the export action. So the exported files were added to the uploader, but I had opened the uploader to upload some other files. The only way to get rid of the unwanted additions is to quit the uploader and relaunch it.
2. An Update Galleries or Refresh button. If the uploader is running and I make a new gallery from the web interface, the only way for the uploader to see the new gallery is to quit and relaunch it.

the backspace or delete key works in this situation currently :thumb

I chose smugmug over others and one of the reasons was this uploader!
However if we're asking about feature requests then yeah reflecting some sort of local directory structure would be cool
Also cool would be to reflect iPhotos folder structure - I have a LOT of folders and galleries and sometimes I have the same gallery name - once for the normal album and once for the web gallery album - but I don't see that difference in smugmug macuploader
Don't know if you could get the code for free but it would be kick ass to somehow combine the iMedia viewer with the smugmug uploader...
Here's a link to it: http://www.karelia.com/imedia/
edit: yes you can get it for free! check out the details on that link above...
I'm sure the possibilities are endless but development time is not :wink
good luck with any future developments and I'll be hanging with baited breath for any future updates :clap
Cheers

Uh oh, seems like the uploader doesn't work in Leopard... :(
When you start it up you get an error message, then the app opens but you can't drop anything into the app.

G'day Jase,
Thanks for the positive feedback.
At the time when I rewrote this from scratch, we were mainly looking to replace the functionality of the previous uploader. I would totally love to have a folder structure like that. I will look into it and that component.
Thanks,
David

Tim, does clicking the + button to add files work ?
Crap, stupid me--I had it on the iPhoto tab. So photos upload fine, but I get this error message as soon as I launch the app. Once I click OK everything seems fine.

Jase,
It should be adding the keywords from iPhoto automatically, if that's not the case, can you please post the url of a gallery where this isn't happening.

Will it support movies in the future ?

Cool - don't forget to take a look at that iView software that you can re-use - then you could integrate like a media browser ala iLife

You can use it for free too - so it's the right price :wink

Hey there,
Does MacUploader check for duplicates yet?
And I just uploaded a bunch of stuff from iPhoto, and found that some of the videos were split into the wrong categories...I'm trying it over to see if it's reproduceable, since I've been on and off a variety of wireless networks while uploading.
Thanks!,
D
Edit: The program isn't handling movies right. When I tried to upload 4 movies, it went and found 56 (I had two categories called "Junior" that it lumped together, which totaled 56), then proceeded to upload the videos from the wrong category. It only ever uploads ~1/2 the videos before it skips on to the next category. Also: it works perfectly find on my version of leopard, so long as I stick to pictures.

Howdy All-
So I have been doing some uploading of photos and creating galleries, what would be nice is if one could go directly to the gallery after the upload is complete so that the theme and other things could be applied.

Am trying to use the Mac Uploader for the first time but am not having much joy, I can create new albums just fine and even edit the existing ones but when I match iPhoto albums up with destination galleries then hit upload, it does the "Processing iPhoto data" step then locks up trying to upload the first file with the status bar not moving at all for the file.
I'm still on Tiger, running all the latest patches excepting the latest security patch that came out the other day so does anyone have any ideas? my account is at http://jaseone.smugmug.com where you can see all the empty galleries just waiting to be filled with photos!
EDIT: Would it make a difference if my iPhoto library is on an external drive? (Yes it is mounted) I've tried it with iPhoto open and iPhoto closed with the same result, also tried logging out and back in within the uploader with no joy...

I don't think that it should make any difference, how photos are in the album you are trying to upload ?

I was trying to upload a LOT to multiple galleries but even if I just try one album of 20 photos to a single gallery it still does the same thing.
I tried looking for logs and what not for debugging but couldn't find anything so is there anything I can look at to help diagnose the problem?
EDIT: I was using the iPhoto exporter plugin previously mainly as it allows you to resize the images as they are uploaded but wanted to try the uploader for older pics so I could batch them overnight.

I see it creates a SmugMug MacUploader.growlTicket file but doesn't seem to do much else, Growl 1.1.2 is working fine for other applications like Adium and even if I disable Growl notifications it doesn't help.
EDIT: Am even trying an album with just 4 photos to a single gallery and it still just does the processing iPhoto data then brings up the file name of the first image with no thumbnail and empty status bars.
EDIT 2: If I drag and drop those 4 images from iPhoto to the files tab then they upload fine so the prob lem seems iPhoto specific
EDIT 3: Could it be because these images aren't within the Iphoto library itself? (I imported them from a separate directory and didn't realize I didn't have the copy to iPhoto library option checked)
EDIT 4: I think we have a winner with edit 3 as I just tried one of my more recent albums that has it's photo's located within the iPhoto library directory structure and it kicked off fine, any suggestions on how to deal with that?

I'm having issues of my keywords and captions not transferring with my photos I export to SM using both SmugExport and ApertureToSmugMug. I need these functions to work and thought I'd give MacUploader a try if it works with Aperture. I couldn't see evidence that it works here.

Old-style plist parser error:

Following a previous post, I deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist file and ran iPhoto to let it re-create it, but the error did not change. (When I removed the file and ran Uploader *before* running iPhoto, the error was "debug" "returning nil" as someone else described in a previous post).

I'm getting "stream contains no bytes" or something very close to that every time I launch the uploader. If you logged this somewhere (console log, anyone ;-) ) I could post the exact message.
This is relatively recent behavior -- I suspect either the upgrade to 10.5.2 or to the Safari 3.1 beta caused the problem.
It's not a fatal error -- everything seems to continue okay once I dismiss the dialog, it's just a bit annoying :wink

(I actually replied via PM, but I figured it'd be worth posting in case anyone else might find it useful.)
With David's help I was able to locate the problem. It appears the offending lines in the Pictures/iPhoto Library/AlbumData.xml looked like the following:
<string>12 <key>106</key>
<string>2007 <key>385</key>
<string>359degrees <key>1</key>
<string>bw <key>41</key>
<string>pipes <key>216</key>
<string>skyline <key>25</key>
<string>tuesday <key>91</key>
rather than the rest of the lines which looked more like:
<key>385</key>
<string>2008</string>
<key>176</key>
<string>desk</string>
<key>361</key>
<string>iphone</string>
ie, they seemed to be missing a closing "</string>" tag.
Those keywords were not ones I had created myself in iphoto, but seem to have come along when I imported a few images from a friend -- I forget exactly how I imported those (it's been awhile) but I think I imported them directly from flickr via safari; I think the keywords were actually part of the EXIF in the images.
In any case, once I removed those keywords from iphoto, all the lines in AlbumData.xml looked much more proper, and the Uploader ran without any errors. Thanks for the help!

In the previous version (3.0.1), I could create a link to the MacUploader and put it in Lightroom's "export actions" folder, then it would open the uploader with the image(s) in it ready to go.
When I do the same for 3.0.2, it opens the application but the image(s) isn't in the list. I am able to drag and drop onto the app once it's open.
I also did a test by dropping a jpeg onto the application icon in the applications directory and it doesn't accept it, when you drag it over an application that will accept it, the icon is highlighted (try it over safari or Text edit, the applications on either side) but for the Smugmug MacUploader.app it stays blank, and if you let go of the jpeg over it's icon, it doesn't do anything. This worked fine for 3.0.1
is this just me?

I've used the LR plugin uploader but I like this one better. I'm often on a slow connection and it can take hours to upload a batch, it's nice to have the uploading in a seperate app.
I also have the mac uploader icon always in my dock so I could drag photos from a folder right onto it. very handy!

Very nice tool and I've been using it for couple of weeks.
I am struggling with uploading large number of pics (~6000) that are distributed across several events in iPhoto.
Currently, I'm having to create an album for each event :-(
So, I have two feature requests for this wonderful tool:
1. Is there an option to automagically create an album based on album/event name in iPhoto?
2. Is there a way of creating album preferences that can be applied to all albums by default? I noticed that I am not able to set these in the 'Preferences' section.
Cheers.

Thanks for this... Loving it... Any chance you could think about doing a bit of spring-clean on the create new gallery dialogue menus?
Here's what I feel needs attention:
[1] The new gallery 'title' doesn't accept the universal Cut 'n Paste keycuts (CMD-V)... You can right click and select 'Paste' though...
[2] It would be a nice touch if this title was pre-populated by the checked gallery title from iPhoto (if one was checked of course, and not if more than one was checked!)... It's a time-saver...
[3] Setting the 'sort by' under the 'look and feel' tab doesn't stick... I'm trying to sort via 'filename' for what it's worth...
[4] Can you save the various gallery settings? There's a couple things i check and un-check each time I create a new gallery... It would be another time-saver to not have to flip between all the tabs and locate and remember what all the settings are supposed to be...
[5] Perhaps it's only my way of working, but since the 'hidden photo' feature was introduced into SmugMug, I upload my galleries as 'private', then hide various boring / duplicate / private photos through SmugMug, then make the gallery public... Any chance of using iPhoto's 'hidden photo' settings on upload, this would simplify things... Currently 'hidden photos' are not uploaded, but if they could be uploaded with the 'hide photo' SmugMug setting, that would be preferential... Perhaps this needs to be flexible for people who like the current behaviour...
I think that's it... Thanks again!

Just a couple comments about the new name. First, I got used to launching the SmugMug Uploader by hitting Spotlight and typing "uplo..." or "smu..." (I drive my Mac largely with the keyboard, and the uploader did not make the cut for my Dock.) With the name MacDaddy, I can't launch it by Spotlighting "upload..." (For some magical reason, MacDaddy does come up if I Spotlight "smu..." even though Smugmug isn't in the name, so that's cool.)
Also, I already have an application named MacDaddyX (http://www.updatesoup.com/macdaddy/) on my computer. Not a dealbreaker because the names are slightly different, but SmugMug Uploader was a much more distinctive, descriptive, and self-explanatory name for what it does.

I just updated, and I'm stuck on "Network Interruption uploading paused." Keeps happening. Not sure if it's related to the update or not, but it happened right after that. I haven't been seeing any other evidence of network connectivity issues, including to SmugMug, though I haven't yet dug in to see what host exactly it's trying to reach and what's happening. It's not clear to me how long it's waiting before retrying, or if there's any way to force a retry immediately. More visibility into all of this stuff would be helpful.
Also, I agree with colourbox about the name. I prefer a name that includes SmugMug. Not a big deal, though...

Wireless. But it's generally a pretty reliable wireless network, and I have full control over it, so if there are issues there, I should be able to address them. I virtually never have connectivity issues that I've been able to trace to the wireless network.
It's actually working right now, but I'd like to understand more about what's going on. It looks like it's just talking plain HTTP to 63.81.134.24 at the moment. Is that the only connection it tries to make? In other words, when it's failing, can I be sure that it's that HTTP connection (or DNS) that's failing? Would a DNS failure give a different message?
Thanks!

I can't claim to be all that proficient on the Mac platform, but this is very similar to the situation I'm having. System is OSX 10.4 and the latest version of iPhoto 5. I've downloaded MacDaddy version 3.0.3 and installed. I've selected the photos inside iPhoto to export, it logs in and shows me my galleries in decending sequence (nice response time too since I have over 1000 galleries). Selected the appropriate gallery and clicked Export. The first photo in the queue uploads fine, then iPhoto just sits - no spinning ball and the second photo in the selection list doesn't move into process. I checked the gallery and the uploaded photo is fine.
Not sure what happened but it appears to have gotten lost after one photo.

If you are taking requests for changes in a new update, I'd like to add three:
1. When dragging files into the uploader, the uploader doesn't reverse the order.
2. A Preference setting as to how many get uploaded at a time.
3. A way to reorder the list.

Hey there, perhaps I am missing something, but if I have a large number of iPhoto events, and I want a gallery for each one, do I have to go in and manually create each gallery and then select the destination to upload to?
Can I not just have a gallery create automatically that corresponds with the events name?

please forgive my ignorance but when I click on the hyperlink for download, it just brings me to a blank page with no auto download:dunno
this link http://cdn.smugmug.com/img/mac/MacDaddy-3.0.4.510.dmg
should put a dmg on your desktop or downloads folder, if it doesn't please write our Support Heroes (http://smugmug.com/help/emailreal) and let us help you directly from the help desk. Thanks!

Never did see a definitive response regarding getting rid of the "Stream had too few bytes" startup error. Did I miss it? MacDaddy 3.0.4, OS X 10.6.4. I don't use iPhoto.
Edit: here's a partial answer to my question. In my case the message was apparently caused because I don't use iPhoto. Playing with MacDaddy prefs I saw the option to turn off iPhoto support. I did so and now the error message that I used to get at startup is gone.

I recently migrated to my new Macbook Pro, and now have a strange thing happening with MacDaddy upon opening the program. I have uninstalled via "drag to trash" and using App Zapper, and reinstalled a couple of times now. It seems to work fine once I click off the error splash, so it is more an annoyance than anything right now. Thought I would ask to see if anyone else has seen this error and knows how to get it to go away?
The Error:

What is uninstalled in an effort to fix the error:
