View Full Version : Weekly Assignment #50: 50

Hey, we got to an official anniversary, this is our 50th class! :barb
For this class we going to have something rather challenging (or so I hope).
First of all, you are only allowed to use 50mm lens. Zooms are OK, but please make sure they are set to 50mm. I'm not gonna be too picky about one-two mm off, but any more than and you get a yellow card :deal .
Next you're gonna shoot full manual, just like it used to be done in the 50-ies :-)
Next, subject-wise, please try to frame something that would can possibly be considered as a credible 50-ies shot. Classic cars are your primary choices, but anything "period" would do, as well as some "eternal" stuff, like an architecture, landscapes, etc.
And finally, please do the post processing to match 50-ies style duotone pictures, both color and style :deal .
B/W preferred, sepia is fine.
Please use Internet for research (google, wiki, etc).
As usual, fresh pictures only. EXIF is mandatory. Post process according to the plan above.
For the rest of the rules, class index, etc., pleas use this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
Let's see those fifties!

One tech question :
real 50mm or 50mm after crop ?

One tech question :
real 50mm or 50mm after crop ?
Real 50mm, forget the crop :-)
The simplest way: put on "nifty fifty" and go have fun

Wow, this is a tough one for my first weekly :)
These were the only things I found around the house from the 50's. A 1954 nickle and a grade school yearbook of my dad's that my grandma gave me. I thought the yearbook was interesting because it's tattered and falling apart and it's tied together by strings, which you don't see too often anymore, but when I took a picture of the outside of the yearbook it wasn't as interesting as seeing the pictures inside, especially since the date isn't on the outside, but is on the inside.
These were shot with a Nikon D50 with a 50mm/1.8 and SB-800

Can you please update your post with the EXIF links? :deal
I wish there were more "feel" to the entries rather than just having period subjects, but hey, this will do to boot this show up:-) :wink

I am of those who reads the f manuals at hight speed or don't read it at all.:wink
But will you Nikolai confirm :
What you want is a picture which might be shot in the 50 ies.
Some kind of this for example:
http://antoniocorreia.smugmug.com/photos/168040199-M.jpg http://antoniocorreia.smugmug.com/photos/132581419-M.jpg
You do know the picture on the left already.
May be if the photo was shot and developped in the 50.ies/60.ies it shouldn't be so sharp. No. It could be as sharp as this one.
My grand mother, was photographed in the 60.ies and the photo is as sharp as the towell one. I photographed her with the Rolleicord. I still remember where I made the shot ! :D I loved this woman !:lust
I do have a plan to go and shoot some of this moody pictures !
But that will only be possible tomorrow, in the evenning.

Yes :-) :thumb And I will even accentuate those fifties look by adding grain, vignetting, 5mm white border and and other film-era related nasties :-)

This exif thing is always a drag to get.:scratch
I will post it at home, editing this post, because here I can't make a correct screen capture.
( Why the <photo tools> don't have the exif ? I must make a poll for this one of these days ... )
Shot Manual, with flash. The lens was at 62mm. Is that acceptable ?
No. It is not.:wink
Do I have to re-shoot ? Yes I must.:D
A very classical motive, non creative, but working very well for this assignment.

Hmmm... Antonio - nice picture,
but I don't feel 50's around it even a bit :huh
As you said lens is from 60's (62mm exactly :wink)
that's not bad,
but my overall feeling is around mid 80's ?!
Let's do it again (me of course too :rolleyes)

Excuse me but I have to desagree with you regarding the contents of the picture.
It is true that you and me, we do have a very different life experience.
In the 40.ies until the 25 th April 1974 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnation_Revolution), Portugal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugal) was a country under the dictatorship of Salazar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant%C3%B3nio_de_Oliveira_Salazar). I am sure you do know about this.
There existed the sensorship to allow only the publication of certain articles which were not against the regime.
Photography was also part of that system and the very naive themes were well accepted even if people were starving in Alentejo. (I am not communist).
So, my picture of the vase with roses is OK, it could have been shot at that time.
I remember one of my father's photo: a boy - some 6/7 years old - eating in a staircase out in the street. Naive theme: Simple.
And so are the roses.
http://antoniocorreia.smugmug.com/photos/135568589-Th.jpg
This is one of my father's pictures shot in the 60.ies. Not a great composition but very simple and straight. The fishermen where inside the wooden boat, which very few exist these days.
What distinguishes this picture of the dictator Salazar from one which could be shot today ? The costume may be ... the pose, very circunstancial and convenient. The smile ... the future, while people were tortured in prison...
May the halo around his head ... like saints use to have.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d2/Salazar1933.jpg/200px-Salazar1933.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant%C3%B3nio_de_Oliveira_Salazar)
Well, I will post more pictures which will look like from the 50.ies/69.ies with the "correct" focal distance.
In fact many pictures were shot not in 35 mm but in 6*6 !
Americo Ribeiro was a photographer from Setubal who shot many aspects of the city. Here (http://fotografoamericoribeiro.tumblr.com/) we can see some af his valuable work. I remember he was using a 6*6 and later, a 35 mm

This model brownie was around with Malt shops and Pink Cadilacs,so it only seemed fitting to shoot it.
Shot at 1.8 to give the feel of an old camera and processed into B$W with some grain added..
The over exposed look is also what this camera produced most of the time..
i have no idea how to embed exif data ,I can do a print screen that shows it.

The way I did it was go into my smugmug gallery and choose "Critique" for my style. On the right side there's a link that says "Photo Information". At the top of that page, there's a link to use to display Exif info externally.
I did notice that when I photo shopped my pic, the exif data was gone, so I linked to the exif data of my original photo.

I should say, though, for me this image does not deliver the period feeling. Maybe it's modern-day glasses, maybe something else...:dunno
EXIF: in worst case scenario - simply type stuff in manually, way easier than adding a screenshot.

Thanks! :-)
On a first one, I honestly think there is too much negative space. It could be that it looked great in color, but with out target bw/duotone it surely create just a large gray void.
I like the second one. Few things that could help with the "50ies theme":
more aggressive bw treatment
add grain
slight vignetting
the image features a slight keystoning effect. I would either fixed it or emphasized itHTH

Thanks, Kathy, very a propos subject:-)
One thing we need to pay attention to when doing something like that is the sky. It was a common thing in b/w film era to use a yellow filter to drastically emphasize the sky, which, if left alone, would always be rather bleak. This is especially true here in SoCal where the clouds are very rare guests.
Nowdays can either use PS photo filter, or simply mask the sky out and treat it separately to make it the way we want.
Another thing that can be good to create a 50-ies shot imitation is to use a super high ISO, thus creating a in-camera noise. While different from X-film grain, it can set a solid base.

Yes, my very first photo class was in 1971, we shot and developed Plus-X and Tri-X. And I do remember those filters. :wink Not only were the filters yellow, but, so were your fingernails from the chemicals.
My next PS class is on using them. :clap I will have to go back and work that image when I get there.
Digital imaging is a whole 'nother world, huh?
