I am sure Angelo.. He has like 20 tennis balls hidden in the snow and he sticks his whole head under like an ostrich to retrieve them..

Funny you should pick #1. Did you know #2 won a Kodak Picture of the Day? I guess it was the snow that made it more special. I agree that #1 shows a lot of personality. That's a great dog huh! Also a couple of great shots. We should all post a dog of the day. I have several myself. I have two dogs and today I'm baby sitting for my daughters dog as well. He's a yellow lab, and my two are a Rottie and a shephard mix. The mix has appeared in many of my landscapes and even a few of Ginger's. I call him the ubiquitous dog. He looks good as a generic dog in landscapes. Here he is as he appeared in one of my challenge entries.

He has a whole tutorial on getting the right color of that dog.
(or the other one)
Love the white on white: the snow and the white dog.

If I could, for this challenge I would enter a baby with a puppy and kitten.
Maybe a dog, too.

The only thing I have is the dog.

I love your dogs, four labs. All those tennis balls under the snow? I wonder if he knows what happened. Woke up one morning and the world as he knew it had changed.:rofl

I just found this thread......you all might be in trouble......I can go on for hours with "Kona" stories.....he is known by many, I'm the lucky one here. Suffice it to say, a few years ago, on Xmas Day, Kona was chasing a ball and got hit by a car (real bad then, he's fine now) and the next day at work, my office Mgr. informed me that call volume was near normal and only one call was work related, the rest were"I heard Kona got hit. Is he OK??!" calls, he even had calls from Kansas and British Columbia!.........should we all be so lucky, huh?
He'll be six in March, works with me every day, is a trained therapy dog and the best counselor I've yet to see.
This is him waiting to get out into the snow when we were up at Yosemite in January.

I'm commin' to kidnap your doggies for a day :D

I miss having a dog :cry

For a time, I had two. A black lab named Magnum and a shepard/husky
mix named Ben. Ben was trained to air scent and track people. His
obedience was good. On the other hand, Maggie was a pure bred
lab that some folks didn't want because he was too rambunctious and
ate butter off the counter. I trained him in the basics of field trialing but
never beyond the fun part of it (it takes a lot of work to maintain the
training). Ben never cared much for water but Maggie loved it. They
tolerated one another but were best kept separated.

Both were fine dogs and I miss them both.

Sweet dog ,sweet shot!Good gosh, 4 labs, you shame me and my Yorkie. She has not been groomed for years. I give her a bath sometimes and cut the hair around her eyes.

I do remember when she used to look like your dog. I had more money then, and I was not "into" photography, had never heard of lens lust.

Does this renewed interest in dog photos mean that I need to pay attention to my dogs?

I usually only photograph them on the purchase of new equipment, geez....challenges, birds, church, etc...........well, the dogs are now self entertainers.

For shame on me, and the ragged Yorkie, the other 2 are also self maintaining Corgis. When they blow coat, the hope is that it will eventually fall off.

Here is looking at you, the occasion, a new lens, looks like it was a telephoto:

JUst the month BEFORE. Before the 20D and the new lenses, there were
photos like this (I love this photo, the first dog is not mine, Skye is too focused to put his tongue out. That photo really does something for me, down deep where the darkest part of my soul lives, hehe):

and this:

Love them, 4 labs, just love them.

I had an interesting few hours. I left my dogs, not in crates, just in the house, with the back door open. (It was too late to take them to a park, or anywhere).

I went to see if the osprey had babies. I am going to upload and post my photos. No dogs, but not much in ospreys, either. Daddy never did come home and mama was sitting on eggs or babies, don't know which.

I stayed til it was dark. I shot a sunset, a flower, ..........oh, just about anything near me. I was by the side of a road, a busy road that leads to an island. I kept watching the nest, then I shot some cat tails. Etc.

Boy were my dogs glad to see me. And I found the whole thing somewhat amusing. I spent my time by the side of the road, and I have a photo of a flower, a tiny one, would be perfect for the big challenge.

Now your dogs look like they had fun! Your pool? You didn't have to take them anywhere? If I had taken my dogs, I would have been scared one of them would have gotten out of the car somehow into all that traffic.

I really like the expression in that last picture you posted.:D

I do want to say in my defense, Skye was hurt, so I laid him off of recreation for awhile, in the winter. And I wanted to make sure he healed.

I wouldn't have know about it if it were not for photography. I had about 400 photos that looked like this.

http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/10937325-M.jpg
I thought he looked fine while we were at the beach. He was running and all. But around 2 in the morning when I was doing these photos I was horrified to see this stance. He never put any weight on his rt front leg. Not in one photo.

I sent copies to my corgi club, they said "no big deal" and "you can't tell anything from pictures". I thought I could tell alot from pictures. I hated to spend alot of money taking him to the vet, it was the weekend, too. He seemed to feel fine. I just knew he wasn't.

He has a very good breeder, she convinced me that it was not serious and to rest him for a few weeks..............so I quit taking them out. We went once after that, a month later, his foot was fine, the photos were totally different and diagnosed a healthy dog, but I was out of the habit of going to the beach.

Another photo that everyone said did not mean a thing.

http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/10937328-M.jpg

He was easy to photograph that day as he sat by me alot. See he looked happy, but I did not think my photos were normal no matter what anyone said.

http://gingerSnap.smugmug.com/photos/10919912-S.jpg

And that was when birding got serious and a good habit was broken.......it did start out for good reason: That was a hurt dog. I only knew because of photography. Otherwise he would have gotten much worse. his breeder said it was probably a pulled muscle or something.

Hey, 4 labs, if your post is right after mine, it has been awhile for both of us!

Great 4 (oh, 3, sorry) dog photo, 4 labs. :clap

I have 3/dog photos, too. They are as difficult for me to get as birds. One always is a butt shot.

If I weren't buying lenses, I would put a pool in, too. Actually wouldn't, but it is great for photography. Smart buy, there. We all need props. Like the tennis ball there, too. Nice touch. And it got their attention, too.

I would get one of those thrower things that people have on the beach, but my dogs only care about chasing dogs: who are chasing tennis balls.

This is my girl Piper at lure-coursing - it's not a competetive dog-sport, they chase a lure tied to a wire that goes through pulleys in a zig-zag course over about an acre. The controller is like a model railway set - the lure can be set faster or slower or put into reverse to suit the dog that is running. Good for action shots of dogs cornering, and for proving to me that I haven't got focussing the D70 pinned down yet.

Looks like this thread died out ...

Maybe there are some new photos out there that are just waiting to be posted. Here is a picture of our new dog Gilligan. We got him Dec 26 at about 7 weeks of age. I can't believe how much he has grown in 3 weeks!

http://digismile.smugmug.com/photos/52496495-L.jpg

Getting a puppy to pose for a picture is really hard! When I look at puppy calendars, I now look at them with great respect!

Gilligan is a handful to say the least and our other dog Buddy has finally warmed up to him. Last night while watching a movie with friends, I noticed that Buddy and Gilliigan were sleeping together for the very first time. Barely got my camera in time and fired off one shot before they woke up to see what dad was doing ...

Cool photos!

I wish this were a sticky on the nature thread. I am always confused as to where to post my dog shots, and I know people forget about this thread unless it is on top.

Now I feel like I need to move all of my dogs over here, or at least the last ones. I posted them on the nature thread.

I did not know where this thread was after "wide angle" disappeared. I could have searched, but I figured if I didn't know, lots of other people didn't either ...............

I have enjoyed looking over some of the more recent pages! Dogs are always cool, and there are some good photos here!

Maybe there are some new photos out there that are just waiting to be posted. Here is a picture of our new dog Gilligan. We got him Dec 26 at about 7 weeks of age. I can't believe how much he has grown in 3 weeks!

I didn't know this thread existed....now you guys are going to be sorry!!! I take more photos of my dogs than anything else! After losing 2 of my dogs in a few months time about 5 years ago, I adopted this little firecracker. She's the sweetest dog on earth, but boy, does she have 'tude!!! Her name is Suzie. About 6 months later I adopted Nikki to keep her company while I work.

This is Suzie recently before her haircut...
http://saurora.smugmug.com/photos/86048278-L.jpg

I have small dogs because I live in a condo....but don't let the small size fool you...they have the worst reps in the neighborhood! :rofl I always seem to have a long lens in my hand and a very short balcony, so I shoot a lot of head shots. In fact, Suzie is getting quite well "recognized" on the Daily Photo for the "back" of her head!!!

This is my other gal, Nikki. She is getting up there in years and turning quite grey. She use to love to "pose" for pics and would wag her tail and smile. But she hates that big, black CANON 20D!!!!! Now she leaves the room! Guess I will have to get my point and shoot out for her. I find that the auto-focus does not work well on finding her eyes against the black fur and she is continually OOF. But then, that goes along with her personality! (DOGS RULE!!!!)

Sorry to hear about Buddy. Our pets are closer to us in ways that people cannot be. Are these your new dogs or just adorable pictures of others dogs? I like the second shot a lot.
Thanks for the thoughts, Gluwater and Saurora. No, these recent pictures are just random shots from the offleash. We do have another furchild in the family. His name is Gilligan and he's a 9.5 month old, 90 pound, puppy brained retriever. If you look at my post from Mar 11, Buddy is the shepherd and Gilligan is the pup in the last couple of photos. We got him at Christmas and brought him home from Montreal as a little ball of fluff. Well, he still has a bit of fluff, but there's nothing small about him ...

I initially found it very difficult to go to the offleash with Gilligan after Buddy died, as this had been a regular routine for many years with Buddy. When we got Gilligan, I had a wonderful time photographing them both. It just wasn't the same without Buddy.

Well, Smart Wife suggested one day that I just come and take photos of the dogs (Smart Wife knows how absorbed I can get when I'm photographing). Well, maybe this one time ... Well, I had fun, and I just kept doing it week after week. In fact, I even got a couple of unexpected customers that wanted a better photo of their dogs.

So my reason for posting these photos of other people's dogs in this thread is twofold:

First, to continue practicing pet photography (they take lousy direction, and would rather play than worry whether you have the shot or not),

and second, to hopefully revive interest in this thread. It was started by 4Labs, who has some great shots of his "pack". I have plently of shots of my own dog(s). I thought people might get tired of seeing the same pooch every week. I am hoping that others will be inclined to post photos of their furchildren, just like you did.

Here is Gilligan from a couple of weeks ago ...

My dogs are totally neglected! Except for the fact that I come home, or if here I get up from the computer to feed them.

I took them to the beach once this year. After we got home, the 4 yr old corgi w dysplasia could barely walk, could not get from one room to the other. The next day he was fine, but I was wiped out!

My car is not air conditioned, the dogs drank sea water. whine whine. SO, I used to take a gazillion photos, it was dogs, dogs, dogs.........

Now it is dailies, dailies, dailies............and lately birds, etc.

I guess I have to take the dogs somewhere to photograph them. Was waiting for cooler weather, best excuse I can think of.

I have two Corgis, a red/white male and a tri female. I have an older Yorkshire terrier and she rules! Quietly, or yappy, but firmly.

I will post here, too. Either I didn't know this thread existed or I forgot.

Sorry for all the dogs who have died. I had a run of that about 4 and 5 yrs ago. It is wrenching!

Glad for all the dogs here!!!! They will rule the world, have access, all we ever wanted........................in a few years. Now, it can be inconvenient to take a dog with me.

Oh, yeah, and there are aligators where I shoot. The dogs, 3?, are allowed on leash, but I would shoot and not notice the aligator. Scary thought!

Love that shot, Ginger!!! Alligators??? On the beach? I certainly hope not!! :huh

Thanks, Susan! I have "prettier" shots of the dogs, alone and together. But imo, it is shots like this, a true grab shot, that one treasures.

No aligators at the beach. It is a place where they can run free at certain inconvenient, early morning hours.

There is also a dog park. The beach, maybe when it cools off, Merry Chapel will only be the tri female drinking sea water. Also, my car is not a/c, so I have been putting off taking them to the dog park. Bill has gone with me in the past, it helps, but he prefers the areas in which I am birding.
He takes a chair, digs in and reads a book.

Birding areas are marshy areas, most of which do have aligators! They are not around as much right now, mating season must be over for them, but it does scare me to take a dog to an area of danger when I am more interested in photography. I kind of totally forget everything except "the shot".

Nahh not "nervous" but WHFT are full of energy. She never stops running around ... but her running has purpose ... She is a great dog, just not for everybody ... requires a ton of attention ... but she'll return more than she takes in love. There is a Shelby story everyday. I like your mutt (mutts = mixed breed ... like Americans ... a dog doesn't have to be abandoned to be a mutt).

S-
The Wheaton is nearly opposite of the WHFT (BTW- WHFT are different than your normal, run-of-the-mill Fox Terrier ... in fact, I read that they come from completely different lines ... genetically quite different ... but I digress).

The Wheaten Terrier is calm and even mannered, fluffy, flexiable, never does anything wrong ... the WHFT is always doing something, poking here looking there ... when spotted leaving a room she always has a guilty look ... scruffy, her legs are spring loaded (even when she sleeps her outstretch legs are 90 degrees from her body). The Wheaten will play at the drop of a dime, no hesitation, but she will also calm down instantly with the snap of a finger ... the WHFT ... no way Jose. He only way to slow down Shelby is to tie her up (I found duct tape to be most effective).

Interesting that you see many WHTF at Dog Beach. I rarely see them anywhere. The old TV series The Thin Man really made them popular for a while.

If you were to only have one dog in your life ... you gotta get a Wheaten. Our neighbor's little girl was introducing Cookie to her equally little friend with "... this is Cookie. She's not a dog, she just looks like a dog."

He's a long hair chihuahua.

This breed doesn't have that nervous chihuahua twitch and is very nicely tempered. Sammy's little quirk is that he doesn't lick your face like other dogs. He prefers to sniff your breath. Yep, he wants to smell your breath and avoids his mouth to your face contact at all costs.:D Weird, but he's very playfull and a great dog.

This weekend is our Canadian Thanksgiving and we got together with my sister-in-law and my nephew. My brother is working in Russia (28 days in/28 out) and wasn't going to be here for Thanksgiving.

This was our first time with our dogs together since they moved back from Houston.

Our dog Gilligan turned 11 months old yesterday, still growing and hasn't lost that puppy ackwardness. He doesn't run too fast, sort of "galumph's along ..."

His "cousin" Tazzi is anything but slow! She was a little ball of fire and hardly slowed down during the hour at the offleash.

Tazzi is a perfect name! She looks like the cartoon character spinning out of control!!! Cute dogs and nice shots, especially the last.

Went to the offleash one more time because we could get some really crappy weather tomorrow (starts with S). At this particular offleash, it is necessary to navigate your dog around several mud holes a.k.a. "roman doggy mud baths". We had made it nearly the whole way back to the car when I heard "No! No! Not the mud! Come! Come!"

It was too late. But the good news is, I'm very happy to report that this is NOT my dog! (but my dog usually has the same happy smile on his face after he has plopped down in the mud ...)

Thanks George and Antonio - Maxx turned 15 in June! But he's definitely not quiet! He's a spoiled brat and whines constantly for food, space in your bed, more food, a place on the couch (he can't jump up on his own anymore). Eventually, he gets what he wants. :wxwax

This is a shot of my new nephew, who was born 4 weeks early. In the shot he is one week old and wieghs 5 lbs. Watching over him is his mom's little dog that weighs 8 lbs. I use to call the dog a little rat because she was so small....I guess I shouldn't call my nephew a rat quite yet.

Well Antonio,

I wish the park today was like your park! Our weather just changed for the worse yesterday. After our previous winter of virtually no snow, it has started early with a bit of a vengeance. It started as rain on Friday night and quickly turned to snow ...

But our dog seems to prefer the cooler weather. Here he is just after we picked him up from his "personal stylist" (i.e. dog groomer). This will be the best he looks until the next time we go (it doesn't last long!).

http://www.digismile.ca/photos/106058001-M-2.jpg

He had a play date with one of his friends. They wrestled in the snow for almost an hour and a half. By the end, he is what we call "mister slobber head" (so much for the groomer ...)

You have some great pictures of your dogs and they truely are beautiful,
count your blessings that your wife won. My wife wanted another lab after our yellow lab Jessie died.

I wanted something different that neither of us had before. We did alot of research and decided on Ozzy. Let's just say that it has been an interesting experience in dealing with the breed. Most recent event, him taking a cantelope off the kitchen counter and eating it, the whole thing. With the Holidays coming up, I will have to have the camera ready at all times......

Some may not agree with this method but Fawn my Mastiff was a food fanatic. I stopped her stealing food by putting an English mustard sandwich on the table. She never took food again.
My other dogs never stole food and waited untill told they could eat. Fawn was just plain greedy and after rapidly eating her own dinner took the other dogs food if she was given the chance.

While on the subject of food. My brothers dogs opened the freezer door and ate the 'frozen' contents. They both felt very ill for quite a few days....
