ridiculous. I'd end up paying 30% more for the already expensive book.

The problem is, the coupons for Overstock only work if you get something other than books or music / video. If you add anything else (I've often bought a pair of small gardening gloves for $2.00), the whole order gets the discount (including the books).

I haven't purchased from Amazon in a LONG time (since they refused to honor a price posted by one of their 'retailers')...Overstock has been a major reason why I've been able to get away with that.

Thanks. I ended up getting it through Amazon's UK branch. Still not the
cheapest, but a bit better than getting it from the States. I just hope it
lives up to the hype and that it's worth it.

Katrin Eismann's masking and retouching books. Dan Margulis's Lab book.
All three absolutely great.

I've tried a couple of Kelby's books, but I just can't get past the "humor".
I don't care how great a Photoshopper he might be, his "jokes" are atrocious.

I've read those as well and agree with you. I read Kelby's Channels book...his "humor" wasn't so bad in there. Margulis' Professional Color book was a good read as well (although just as academic and hard to read as his LAB book).

Eismann is still, to date, my favorite author...I'd be interested to read what you think about Skin.

Well, my friend has this book, so I borrowed it from him. Here's a quote from
the intro to Chapter 1:

That's why we're starting right here at square one, in this chapter on
the basic fundamentals of channels. And when I say "we're" I mean you, and
by "you" I mean "not me."
I would quit any book by any author at this point. But I kept going. This is
still the intro. One relatively sane sentence ensued after the above, and then
this monstrosity:

There are actually some very important things in the first few pages
of this chapter, and if you skip them it will not only impact your
understanding of channels and of how to use this book now (and later when
you refer to it), but you'll have a level of guilt that will linger on long after the
momentary rush you received from spending your money in an irresponsible
and reckless manner. If it's any consolation, that's what I've always admired
about you.

*groan* Please, make it stop! All of this in the intro to the first chapter! I
can't imagine the horrors that lurk in the later pages, but, luckily, I don't have
to find out.

I nearly forgot about this thread. I've had "Skin" for a couple of weeks now.
I think it's really good. The section on lighting is especially interesting
and useful to me. The only slightly disappointing thing about the book (apart
from what I paid for it) is the relatively meagre amount of retouching
techniques Varis discusses. They are quite few and quite basic. That is a minor
gripe, though, since the rest of the book more than makes up for it. To sum up,
I highly recommend it.
