Saturday at the coast

We've had a lot of rain lately. Saturday started off cloudy, then the rains came. I wanted to go to the library, but not in the pouring rain. Around 4:15 or so the rain stopped, so off I went. Did my library stuff and as I got back to the car I saw the sun trying to peek out through the clouds.

Well, there's nothing left to do except head for the closest view of the beach with a white water view -- there are two, Rockaway Beach and Linda Mar Beach. Because the waves are "usually" higher at Rockaway, off to Rockaway I went. Notice the two tiers of "rocks."

No, not fog this time -- but that was rain I saw. I had to close my window, wipe off my filter. I kept trying to take photos, but the wind blew the rain right in my face.

Finally the shower was over! I saw these rays sweeping from the emerging sun onto the rocks. A very subtle effect...

The sun went behind the clouds again, then emerged so I could see it set. Here is part of the reflected glow.

All this in one hour! Our winters can be pretty amazing. I'm trying to soak up all the sunsets I can, once the rainy season ends -- that means no clouds -- which means no spectacular sunsets, just boring ones!

Then the foggy season sets in, and it's rare to see the sunset. The camera, Sony 828, program mode...to keep the ISO at 64. Braced against the car's armrest (lazy gal's tripod!)

Nice set Dee. Way to stick it out. A lot of the time severe weather brings out great opportunities. Many shooters pack it up and head for the house. Often the one that waits it out gets the best stuff.

I really enjoyed seeing your shore. Certainly holds much more interest to my eye than my beach which has no visible rocks. I only get sunriseshots, which I love here because it almost seems everyday is different than the one before.

Yup, we're in the same boat here, LOL!

Had a break in the weather a bit yesterday and a bit of sun is shining today. Forecast is for more of the same (70% chance of rain and thunderstorms) for the next 7 days (sigh).

We just have to sneak out quick and grab what we can, eh, Dee?

Glad you were able to get out for a bit and capture these pretty photos! You are sooooo lucky to live near the beach! Sure gives you some nice photo ops~

hanging out at Linda Mar, it's a wider beach with, I suspect, a shallower drop off, more people to leave crumbs around! There's even a beach front Taco Bell with a picnic deck -- Starlings and gulls love it.

So I'm usually there a half hour after the sun sets. I was just so glad to get a break in the rain we were getting -- we had rain 10 out of 11 days in a row!

I'm a real beach person, find it relaxing... Not much of a mountain girl, except if they are by the ocean (think Big Sur) then they're OK :D

I'm a little nervous about the Yosemite trip, but got a book out of the library where I saw photos that are more my style, so I feel a little better about the trip now. Last time I was in Yosemite was way pre digital, I've learned a lot since then. (I hope!)

I'm lucky to have these rocky outcrops at this beach at both the north and south edges! So if the waves aren't crashing at one end, they will usually be crashing at the other end. Sometimes both, then I go nuts tracking waves as they come in.

This past weekend a bunch of rocks were uncovered as the ocean was taking sand off the beach, adds a little more interest than plain dirt.

OK, I set the camera to P mode and iso 64 (Sony 828) and pretty much let the camera pick what it wants! Then I save for web, which strips the exif but gives me a nice small file.

The first one was f8, 1/250, focal length 13.4 mm,cloudy, pattern metering.

Before the rain, f4 1/200, focal length 51.0 mm, cloudy, ISO 64

Rain behind the rocks: f4 1/160, all the rest the same

And the last, f2.8 1/60 at 51.0mm focal length, light source Auto, metering Pattern.

I like them all, Dee. My special favorites are the last two and the one of the rocks before you closed the window.

How did you make the sun flare like that when it peeked out. Very nice shots.

Maybe I will get some great shots in the next week, it is basically supposed to rain as far as the forecast goes. And I know that often there is a brief peek like you got, or like I got Sunday night, but I just don't know where to go or how long I am going to have to sit there for it to happen. Especially at this time of year. It could stay grey for days.

In the winter, we get the most spectacular sunsets, the problem being, ours are not over the water exactly, and I have taken so many at Shem Creek. I have one more place I would like to try, but they would have to practically guarantee me a sunset for me to go sit there.

In the summer, I am more aware that the storms stop and the sun comes out.
I was thinking that if this rain comes all weekend, maybe I could get downtown to watch people jump over puddles.:rofl And the reflections of course.

Anyway, I do like that set of shots a lot.

Hubby gets impatient and wants to leave when it's all gray, but I've learned to wait, you just never know!
