View Full Version : Closeup photography with a telephoto and a diopter

I recently bought an MPE-65 lens for shooting macro, and although it serves its purpose well I needed something to use for closeup photography. After experimenting with tubes and a teleconverter I finally settled on adding a 500D diopter to my 70-200 F4 L. Focus is fixed at 18" (half a meter) from the front of the lens -the focus ring has little effect. But changing the focal length of the lens changes the magnification, so once I get in position I don't have to move if I want the critter to be larger in the image frame -all I have to do is turn the zoom ring.

Here are the results from yesterday's outing. All Canon gear: Xti (shutter priority 1/640, ISO 200) + 70-200 F4 L + 500D diopter. No flash and minimal post processing.

The light varied, so the Fstops ranged from F5 to F8.
