"Don MacAskill, CEO and "Chief Geek" (actual title) of the photo sharing Web site Smugmug had set up camp with four of his co-workers in the early afternoon.
"Our strategy was to get here early and buy as many as they'll let us," he said. He plans to buy the iPhones for all 26 of his employees.
MacAskill said a generator would soon arrive to supply power for the group's impromptu sidewalk office.
"Just in case the shoe store wants their power back," he said, indicating the line of power cords tracing back to Footwear, Etc.
"We're hoping to ship a new product tonight," he said. "

I believe that there's a 2 per person purchase limit so if there are 4 peeps there from DGrin, that'll equal 18 disappointed employees :huh

1) setup - instant and easy. It uses iTunes (you gotta update iTunes)...
2) I ported my # from T*Mobile - that was all driven through iTunes - quick and simple, took just a few minutes online.
3) The phone was activated immediately.
4) The iPhone finds your wifi - easy and simple
5) Browsing, email, maps all that jazz - simple and effecient.
6) Typing - still new at it - probably need to get used to it but it appears to be OK
7) it's freaking cool!!!!!!!

Yup, they also forgot about no tethering to a laptop, no bluetooth file transfers, no folder structure/finder, no unlocking to work with ANY other sim cards besides AT&Ts, & on & on. All smartphones can do these things & are considered "the basics". Heck, even most low end phones can do these things plus what else was mentioned.
Its a great phone, but that AT&T deal crippled the hell outta it. No way, not for $600 anyway. Why they didnt just sell it only at the Apple Stores unlocked & had a worldwide launch is beyond me. They could have sold a TON.

So...were people sleeping out purely to have them on the first day or is there an expectation there will be stock shortages? There's no shortage of them from what I see around my area. Just about every Apple store has them.
The stories of people paying for spots in line and for other to wait for them is pretty silly. Maybe I'm just no fun anymore. :scratch

No, it is pointless. That is unless some people were just waiting in line for the "experience".
Our store had a line of like 200+ people at 6:00pm. By 8:00, anyone could just walk in freely & buy one, play around, etc. But AT&T stores are def sold out, so I guess for those people not around any Apple Stores would be SOL.

Thanks Andy! Exactly what I wanted to see. There's still no way I'm buying one of these puppies (disposible income is rather low these days... also, I work for the competition -- Palm!), but I was curious.
Also, Phanfare, which I'm using more often than SmugMug (because they do video right (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=61573&page=2#13")) only offers Flash slideshows, which drives me crazy.
Which means Phanfare slideshows won't work on an iPhone, nor do they work on my Wii (which actually has Flash, but only v7, not v9, which Phanfare insists on forcing people to upgrade to.)
I suppose Flash may be necessary to actually enable movies to play in a slideshow, which is something SmugMug needs to consider if they ever (hah) get around to supporting video correctly.
HAHA -- I just tried doing Slideshow on my Smugmug gallery with two videos. The videos play in the background, while the foreground slideshow displays really crappy single frame captures blown up to fill the screen. Wow, that is so lame.

If God hadn't wanted you to eat meat, why did he make cows out of it?cows eat grass and produce milk. Farmer milks cows, and sells milk to icecream company. Icecream company makes icecream, which Andy buys so his son can eat icecream instead of playing with the iPhone so Andy can play with the iPhone himself.

fwiw, I find the iPhone as appealing as the next Apple-lovin' guy, and I'm not knocking it, but there are plenty of other devices (http://steven.vorefamily.net/2007/07/03/no-iphone-for-me-yet/) that are just as adept (or more so) at synching all your crap. Congrats... I went for the iPod Touch instead... Don't believe that the iphone in UK can be used to satisfaction. They will team up with O2, which is an expensive British provider, and you have to get it via car phone warehouse.
This is the duo I have now, and it is a pain... When I need support and call O2 they swop me to carphone warehouse, and the other way around. Painful...
Could anyone on this board tell me if the ipod Touch can do wifi on all wifi networks? Or is it just the starbucks network?

I thought wifi in starbucks is free, as long as you have a drink there... I have never paid for wifi in starbucks till now... My husband thinks that the wifi will only work in starbucks though, I am more inclined to believe you, as I think it would be pretty useless if we could only use it when in starbucks.
Lots of people complaining about the no mail function, but if we can browse, we can read and answer mail via our browser, as long as we have a provider who allows webmail.... I hope it gets here soon so I can try it out.
I read that all previous iphone buyers get a voucher for 100 dollar to spend in apple stuff... neat! It is not nice if they lower the price the day after you bought it.
Thanks for the speedy reply. I am a lady(hmmm) in waiting now...

In the US wifi in Starbucks is anything but free. In fact, Jobs refers to that. $7 for two cups of coffee, and you have to pay for wifi.
The Starbucks deal is just to get past that, and get free access to the music store while in Starbucks. The wifi works anywhere.

I had tried the first iphone, but returned it. I went through the battery very quickly and could not deal well with EDGE browsing. I have made it a year, I wonder if I will buy one this time. I will probably wait to see what users think and then see what software developers offer for it.

It is not about the phone, it is about the package that you have to take in UK for the data. I think that other phones like Nokia and Samsung, Eriksson, will become cheaper and are in fact better then iphone. Nobody mentions the data package you have to buy on top of the 30 or 40 pounds a month subscription.
I have the touch, and don't need a data package for that, only a free open network... I don't know if the iphone will be able to do that, just hook into an open network... If you need a data package, it is a no go for me, as 30 or 40 or 100 pounds a month for a lot of people is still a big stack of money...
I think I will go for a nice new samsung instead...

Here in the States, AT&T are lowering the cost of the phone. But raising the
price of service. Not worth it.
Once their exclusivity expires, then maybe I'll consider one but until then,

It's the same 3G price but remember, it's only when you upgrade to the 3G. And face it, most people don't need 3G. Which makes it a huge win for AT&T.

The iPhone has a much larger screen, for one. The user interface is just, well, its just plain better. Easier to use. More intuitive. Its a total experience, not just a collection of features. Apple is more than just a list of features, which is what most people don't understand.

So, if you work for a company that will cover data part of the cost, do you think that the iphone worth it?absolutely. I used to use another device that had similar capabilities (http://steven.vorefamily.net/2007/07/03/no-iphone-for-me-yet/) (though none of the style), and when it broke I felt like my arm was cut off. Going back to just a phone, without my email, full address book, web browser etc. etc. is downright painful. And that's without the iPhone's style, UI and the upcoming apps. The minute I get a new job, I'm heading to "the iPhone store." :wink

So as usual, the answer is depends.. What your needs are. The new iPhone and others like the Touch and Voyager are SWEEET phones. But if you really want to stay functional in the field w/ minimal work. Smart phones are a better route.

Right now work provides me with a blackjack II. Nice device, terrible battery life. 90% of the time I only use it for email, scheduling meetings, and web access, however once (just to see if I could, and to see how difficult it would be) I worked on a word document while on the bus to work; I don't think I will be able to do that with an iphone.
The blackjack that works gives me has a data only plan (unlimited), no voice. So right now carry my blackjack, my cell phone, and my ipod. Getting an iphone just seems like an ideal way to combine everything.
The reason for not getting an iphone in the past, was that it didn't support msft exchange.

I tested one of the new iPhones for several days last week. One of the first things you notice is the short battery life if you are runnig it full tilt. At 2:00pm I charged it, worked my way thru the features, made a couple calls, a little browsing and GPS tests, lots of e-mail across several accounts, no music, dead at 8:30. Bluetooth was not on.
So I charged overnight, turned it on at 6:40am, turned off wi-fi at 10:am and used it more like a regular PDA, but did some more testing. It was down to 10% battery life at 2:30am the next day, even allowing me to send mail at that time. Again, no music. Certainly much better, but if you use it in critical situations, the life is no where near a typical flip phone or even a BlackBerry.
It took me forever, but I was finally able to find out at&t's SMTP server name for outbound mail for those accounts that need it. gmail was a breeze however. Exchange was surprisingly good. Unfortunately I also have accounts with services that provide POP3 or webmail but not true IMAP functionality. So I will have to decide between POP3 (not!) to the iPhone or just use webmail on Safari (less than optimal). Mail forwarding/aggregating might be an answer but replies get tricky.
Question for all the iPhone / iTouch dgrinners: what res (ppi) and dimensions are optimal for images? Seems it would be 72ppi, but since you can zoom in, I'm not sure what it would be.

From what I read the battery life is excellent, best in its class. Problem is, it's in a class of juice-sucking pigs.
I'm happy enough with the battery life, given my use of it and my proximity to power on a day to day basis. If I need to turn services off to extend life sometimes, then so be it.

I downloaded the free (for now) iPhone app, 1Password (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=285897618&mt=8). It is an iPhone version of their desktop app (https://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password). I'd never been compelled to get it before. Yes, it adds functionality to Keychain Access, but I never really felt the need for it.
After downloading the iPhone version, and finding out that you can sync all the info from your mac, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the app. At $35 I think it's just a touch pricey for what you get, but it's a very good application, and I don't really mind paying for quality.
Syncing with the iPhone is very easy, but I am left with some extra webpassword entries on the iPhone that aren't on the desktop, and shouldn't be there. I can't figure out how to delete them, and even though they're deleted from the desktop and the trash is emptied, they still show up on the iPhone.
The app stores web passwords, but you don't use Mobile Safari with it, rather a browser built on the same webkit. It's fine, but you can't do the cool rotate into landscape view that you can in Safari. Harumph. It is version 1.2, so hopefully they'll add more cool features in the future.
I have some problems with logins. For instance, I have two Google Checkout accounts. GC keeps your username hard written and allows entry of the password only, unless you select "login as different user". It's kind of a PITA. Still working on that one. On the Mac I found that logging out of GC when I was done worked, but it doesn't seem to help on the iPhone
I'm still playing with it, and I'm still a little mixed on it, TBH. But it's well worth checking out.
There's a really great video tute and overview of the product, here (http://cdn2.libsyn.com/donmc2/SCO0160-1password-free-640x360-h264-Free-ipod.mov?nvb=20080802211834&nva=20080803211834&t=0d5b54a6ccb8cac5e12df).

After I dug it up on my own (https://www.wireless.att.com/support_static_files/KB/KB72769.html), my rep confirmed it.
AT&T customers use "cwmx.com" (Standard POP/IMAP compatible via port 25 with no SSL.)
But check the link, also wi-fi must be off for it to work (wi-fi takes precedence over the 3G or EDGE network).
Biggest issue is if you have an IMAP or POP mail account. Roadrunner uses POP. Sure they have a webmail client, but you have to use Safari. OOPS! Network Solutions webmail is compatible with IE, not Safari. So you have to think about how you route and save mail on various servers. GMAIL is great, and I've had no problems using Exchange Active Sync for mail.
But I have several subfolders on Exchange for Contacts, and iPhone seems to only see the top level. But I haven't really looked into a solution for that one (yet!).
