Its part inside joke part technique. Muench star is the star affect that is in every one of the pics posted in this thread. The inside joke part is that Marc taught us on the workshop how to do it and Andy called it a Muench star (I'm guessing that he started calling that from previous shootings with Marc). The affect is achieved by framing the sun so that it partly covered by an edge and then cranking down the apreature to some where around f/22 that will give it those star points. On my shot the sun is just in the split of two branches with the sun being cut off on both sides by a branch. Its pretty easy once you learn to do it. I actually posted my shot because I couldn't decide if I liked the shot because of the composition or simply because of the gimick. A gimick doesn't make a picture but since I took it I'm to close to the subject (emotionaly) to decide which it is.

I :rofl'd at the title of this thread. There have been some great shots from everyone so far.
I've been hitting the sunburst button every time I've got my camera out these days. Thanks Marc (and Andy)!
Of course, the weather where I am is not all that great for clear sun in the summer. So you have to improvise when you see it. These are from last week-ish:
http://www.schmootography.com/photos/161568397-M.jpg
http://www.schmootography.com/photos/161569693-M.jpg
Otherwise, I've been cheating a bit and creating them at night. It's much easier (in that I don't need to half-blind myself looking into the sun) but I didn't know before that you can create the same effect by changing up your lens settings a bit. Rooftopping last night:

I gave it a try... I had to rotate the shot to upload to file size specs of 800x1200 otherwise the shot was distorted. How do you get around that with attachments here?
As you can see, I'm a real novice with photography beyond point & shoot at family events etc.

I don't upload to the site (I just include from my website) but my guess would be that the size limitations are 1200 on the longest size whether its 1200x800 or 800x1200.
Pretty good I would just cover more of the sun so the sun is rounder and not as much blown out. But there is some nice points on the sun.

Schmoo, if you don't mind input you might consider duplicating the image on a new layer, increasing the contrast on the new layer, masking it all out and then painting in the leaves turning near the center of the frame to give them a little more pop. Just an idea.

That is definitely an idea. I have about 7 layers on this image with different masks, trying to bring out contrast and color in various parts of the image. If I get a chance and remember I might set this one up under Technique to get some more detailed input like yours! :bow

Smaller apertures work better, but f11 or smaller may work for your DSLR, f16 or f18 almost certainly will.

Smaller apertures work better, but f11 or smaller may work for your DSLR, f16 or f18 almost certainly will.
F8 works for this shot with my point and shoot, G9
Prime lenses give sharper, cleaner stars than zooms.
24 T&S f22
24-105 f4 IS at f16, 24mm
When shooting into the sun, lens flair is always a possibility. Good, prime lenses help to diminish the probability.
dude thanks for the detailed explanation. I will definitely be trying this soon, then i'll post what I get. I really need to get more prime lenses....:rofl

Yes it is true by partially obscuring the sun you can alleviate the colored flares. However, the star itself will be full if show the entire sun. Also the wider the lens the better the effect.
The thin cirrus clouds wont change much.

He used a cloud, dear. :deal
I think? We should ask him!
I think the answer is that you want the light source to be small in the frame. If the lens is wide enough, then the effective size of the sun is small enough that you don't need partial occlusion. This, shot with a 15mm fish, has a bit of a star from the full sun in a completely clear sky.

Thanks for such the quick reply! So if I am reading correctly, it all has to do with the position of the sun and the aperture correct? Does it have anything to do with the type of lens being used??
Thanks!

Any lens, really. Depending on the shape and # of the blades in the lens, you'll have different # of points on the star.

So in order to make the shot work for the middle of a kiss it would need to be around sunset when the sun is lower to position the edge correctly right?
thanks again for your help! I just wish the sun was out today! ... my luck:cry

This might be a dumb question but this effect workds by putting the sun on the edge of an object how do you do multiple effects at once? How do you "edge" all the lights?

This might be a dumb question but this effect workds by putting the sun on the edge of an object how do you do multiple effects at once? How do you "edge" all the lights? No such thing as a dumb question! I don't have any idea either. I certainly didn't need to in that shot, unless tree branches and window borders had something to do with it.
With enough light, and a small enough aperture, you should always get these stars from a bright light source. As far as I know, the technical term is diffraction spikes. They're caused by light acting as a wave and interfering with itself when moving around irregular shaped obstacles in the optical path, like the edges of our aperture blades, or the struts in reflecting telescopes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffraction_spike (cool picture in that article!). You need the small aperture for a couple reasons, #1 so that the blades get a bit irregular, and #2 so that diffraction effects are magnified.
I'd say this calls, like everything else in photography, for some experimentation! Thanks to weather I'm afraid I don't expect to see the sun again for a while though :cry, so you'll have to do the testing...

You can buy flters that are a series of crossed lines in the filter that create these diffraction grating type shots as well. The you do not have to stop down so far either.

Caught a star by accident, off the Moon though, not the sun. Took this last Saturday about dusk. All but one other photographer had bailed out since it was "too dark to shoot"… :D
15 second exposure, f/11, 10mm, ISO 200 using Nikon's 10-24 super wide lens on a D90. Cropped the shot to make the Moon larger so the star effect is slightly easier to see :
