Hi you'll,

I've been nursing a cold today so I couldn't get out:sick . I had some nice Egret shots but I don't want to get Fish's gills in a tizzy so we will go with the Crested Caracara. I'm not real happy with the pics but it is an interesting bird.

Its a falcon but prefers to eat carrion like a vulture

Well I don't know many folks who don't eat dead meat so I guess you could say we all have a lot in common with the Crested Caracara. :rofl

Thanks Aj. I misspoke when I first described him as a hawk (I've corrected that). It is part of the falconidae family.

I have to laugh about my "stalking skills" on these shots. I was driving down the road in the Wetlands and the Caracara was lying on the side of the road. I darn near ran him over before i saw him. I stopped the car but was too close and he hightailed it out.

Around an hour later I was going over the same stretch of road saying "here's where I blew the Caracara shot" and there he was again in the same place. This time I stopped far away enough so I could get clsoe enough for a shot w/o scaring him off.

Hi Ann,

You are so kind. The shots were underexposed and I got a lot of noise when I adjusted the exposure in Capture. I toned the noise down some with Noise Ninja but lost some detail. The last two shots are very soft and the first two aren't as sharp as I would like.

I didn't notice that. What I thought was that you didn't like him standing in a dull place. That is getting kind of old for me at the place I go. I am wanting reflections. And I need, you don't, but I need to get better at taking photos of flying birds. I have such fun finding them. Then I can't get the lens to focus. I am doing something wrong there.

I am holding the button half way down, it focuses, then I go to take the photo and it focuses again. Or I tried not touching the button, the shutter release, it usually focused. Then the second I touch the button: you guessed it, refocus. I am definitely doing something wrong. Will add to this a photo of a flying Egret. Finally found the bird after he got over by the shrimp boats and I got one shot off. It is focused, but I don't know how. I have found that if I use my old way and focus on something like grass next to the bird, I get easier focus. That doesn't work when the bird is in the sky above me.

Anyway, take care of your cold............can't have anything happen to a cold.
Maybe you could send it somewhere else.

I had to crop this, and I don't have noise ninja. Often, usually, before I take something up from RAW, I set the thing for noise control up by 10, just in case. I can get sloppy and forget though. And I added red to this photo, I should take it out, thought it would help the beak, just made more noise.

I missed a lot of flying (away from me) Heron shots. Parts of birds, not good focus, etc. That is shrimp boat rigging with the egret.

Hey Ginger,

Flight shots are tough. I miss more than I hit on them (thats why i want to uppgrade my camera, need one that foucses better abd has a larger buffer). On the Nikon I have a continuous focus setting and I'm sure your 20D has something like it. Thats the one you should be using if you are going for flight or action shots.

Your are always going to be doimg some cropping on thes type of shots so you want to use the lowest ISO possible and most important of all is to get the exposure right within a 1/3rd of a stop. If you underexpose too much and also crop the pic you will end up with excessive noise.

Your egrte flight shot was pretty good.

H #1 is very good, shows the bird very well,color,and the EYE. #2 also but not as sharp as # 1. also the flight pic all of them gives everyone a great visual the 3 shots give anyone enough info to ID the bird. OK the? the right wing tips on my screen look funny, trying to think how to say it. They look like they are drawn with a pencil with a three d look to them. Noise Ninja did that ?? oh I am talking about the running shot. Great stuff MR. H as you always do. I hurt my back so can not shoot even typing is pain, so I am studying f/stop and ss .Jeff [ may one day a picture i will take]

I hope you back is feeling better. The right wing tips on that pic look strange probably because i sharpened the pic much more than usual because it was so soft. Take care.

The Caracara is a very colorful bird for a carrion eater. I have always said that "a day w/o dead meat is like a day w/o sunshine". Pass those ribs over here before Andy comes. :rofl
