That could have been true last week, but with the LED backlit MBP, it's no contest.

DavidTo:

from what I have read, there seems to be no advantage to the LED backlit MBP:

From Engadget: (http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/05/more-apples-new-led-backlit-macbook-pro/)

All 15-inch MBPs now use LED-backlit displays standard; 17-inchers still use CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent)
Apple claims users can see a battery-life benefit of between 30 mins - 1 hour (depending on use). They did not have stats on exact efficiencies between LED and CCFL backlit displays.
The new LED backlight is the same brightness: 300 vs 300 nits of the previous gen's CCFL
The viewing angle is also the same as before
In other words, besides faster time from fully-off to full-brightness and an increase in battery life, Apple claims users should notice absolutely no perceivable difference between last-gen displays and the new LED-backlit ones.

Haha. Engadget. That bastion of tech "journalism."

Well, one advantage is 30-60 minutes better battery life. Oh, and that "saving the whales" thing as the LED backlights have no cancer-causing-goodness like CFLs do... if you roll with the wool socks and Birkenstock crowd.

I simply don't believe that there is no difference. There could be significantly less difference than I've been hoping for, but for one thing, the illumination should be more even, and will no longer be fluorescent, which has to be a step forward in color fidelity. We all know how good fluorescent is for color. :rolleyes

;-)

Well, to be fair, all the backlight has to do is to set a consistent color temperature (5000K, 6500K, whatever) and the LCD pixels do all the work of obscuring the light to give you the colors you want.

I saw an article which said that the LED backlights have a much better range of control than CCFL backlights and you could have control over individual regions. As such, it would be theoretically possible to do HDR lighting on displays with this kind of display. And to get a contrast ratio substantially better than 400:1 or 1000:1 or whatever, because you're not working to block out a "hella-bright" light.

Now whether Apple will leverage this, I don't know. Here's to hoping!

It's really difficult to get even lighting with traditional LCD displays, and much easier with LED, and that alone is a difference that's worth noting, IMO. But yeah, we'll see.
