View Full Version : Crissy Field western views
Well, I was attracted to the reflection of the bridge in the wet sand. I'm not entirely pleased with these photos, and thinking about the light, I think I must do the dreadful thing and, gasp, get up early to get the light I want. And I'll have to do it soon, before the fog starts rolling in in a few months. But for locals, this is near the restroom area where this little sandbar currently breaks up the shoreline. It may not be there all year long.
I'm thinking of doing some digital composition and putting the boat in the reflection shot...
I wasn't sure what the sunset would be like, or if there would be one. The sun wasn't where I wanted it to be (by the bridge, but instead it was behind the hill). I liked the silhouette of this tree against the sky.
And a different group of trees against the red sky at night... And that ends Crissy field western views...

Today I found another spot for reflections -- near the Warming Hut where we had lunch. Again it's probably a better early morning light shot. Guess I'll just have to wake myself up and get me and the cam there one sunny morning.

Good set Dee. I can't believe I missed them when you first posted. It's always nice to see what other local photographers come up with.
Did you ever try to put the boat in the reflection shot? I think that would be really great shot.
I'll have to check out that warming hut. I think I know the building you are talking about, but never really payed any attention to it. I just figured it was a state run tourist shed.
I do love reflections, but wish I were better at it. It seems I have the reflection or the subject in focus. Somethings off in my technique, but not sure what. I'll have to keep messing around and see what I can do different. Did you focus on the bridge, or the reflection?
Another good spot for reflections is the other side of the bridge at Bakers beach. Just be careful, the beach area closest to the bridge is a nude area! Last time I was there I saw a guy in his birthday suit and flip-flops trying to climb the rock. I don't think any amount of therapy will remove that image from my brain.
Thanks for sharing.

Wow! I love the second shot with the boat! Great capture. I'm not well travelled LOL so everytime I see something of this magnitude, it always leaves me awestruck. :):
The sky gave you some great colours for the tree shot!

I can't believe I missed these, 1st time around :dunno
Oh well. I like the dark sunset shot and the GG reflection (kewl idea). :thumb :thumb
And yes, you're going to have to drag yourself out of that warm bed before the crack of dawn, if you want sweet light. It's tough and sometimes painful, but I think your results will ease the pain :nod It's either that or be satisfied with whatever you can get in the golden hour around sunset. With our weather and fog, I don't have to tell you, that it's a hit-or-miss proposition (in my case, it's mostly miss :lol )
I enjoyed your pics, thanks for sharing them,
Steve

Great shots. You don't see many golden gate shots from the beach, and the reflection is a nice touch. I really love the color of the third one. I wish it had the same composition as the second one - more tree, less hill... There's something about a nice tree silhouette at sunset that is irresistible :)
I've never had the willpower to wake up early for the morning light... I suppose I'll have to try it one day too... or just stay up REALLY late.

That would be much better than putting a Fedex truck in the image. :D

Lucky you to live so close to the GG Bridge! I also like the views you got from the beach. Didn't realize there was access there. We'll have to go together sometime so you can show me your hidden places (like the warming hut).
I know you're a beach kinda gal, but have you ever taken any around the Presidio? They have some cool trees overlooking the coastline and old buildings and of course the military cemetary there. The Children's Science Museum (can't remember the *official* name right now...darn these old memory cells!) is near there, too...I love that old domed building with it's grand columns and reflecting pond.
Geeze, I wish we lived closer to SF! So many fabulous photo ops there...the whole area is a photographer's dream! Coit Tower, Downtown, Fisherman's wharf, GG Park...the place is just bursting with photo ops at every turn. Would be fun to explore it all with you! We really have to plan on doing this sometime! Maybe even get the Bay Area Dgrinners together for a photo shoot some weekend...that would be really kewl, too! (Or maybe Andy can set up an official Dgrin Bay Area shoot for the future, hint, hint! :D )
Well, as always, I'm green with envy over the pics you get!
Cheers!

When Andy came out and we shot together, he headed down the beach at Bakers, but I stayed topside (back was bothering me). When Andy came back up he said next to the trash cans a man was in his birthday suit letting it all hang out, so to speak! I'm glad I missed that!
I wasn't aware that the other end was clothing optional, probably unofficial, or maybe official. I'll have to check the "nude beach" book! One beach by us was clothing optional, but then the state took it over, so now it's not. Boy would all the cars slow down so they could peer over the edge and look down on the "nude beach." We'd see guys with binoculars checking out the birds -- yeah, right! There are a couple of other clothing optional beaches, but the aren't visible from the road.
I focused on the bridge, but I was on the "sidewalk" so the Sony 828 had plenty of depth of field to keep the bridge reflection and the bridge in focus at the same time.
When I'm doing close ups of reflections I'll try to focus on the puddle or water, then on the item, but usually I want the reflection in focus so I focus on that.
The warming hut is cool with lots of affordable gifts, and some very neat books (crafts, eco-friendly stuff, etc.)

You'd have to pass this nudist leaving the beach as it's one of the main trails to the parking area, and if you parked near the bridge end of the park and went down to the beach, it's the first thing that would greet you, and your children!!! I thought that he was next to the trash cans was quite a message!

Kind of glad I did! LOL... even with a bathing suit on..... what was he thinking? Who'd want to sunbathe next to trash cans?
