The first high quality Canon EF in that range was the 28-80mm, f2.8-f4L. Then came the 28-70mm, f2.8L and finally the 24-70mm, f2.8L. They are all fine lenses, but I suggest the current 24-70mm is the most useful, especially on a crop camera.

Repairs may also be a little more difficult to get on the older lenses, actually the 28-80mm is very difficult to get repaired.
