View Full Version : Assignment #36: Still Water

OK, shooting shining metal surfaces was some fun. Let's make it a bit more complex - let's shoot still water surface.
If you're gonna take your Ls to the nearest ocean or pond - make sure there is no wind/surf. Breaking waves do not count. Same with creeks and rivers - no class V rapids or waterfalls. Some ripples are OK, but try to find the surface as still as possible.
If you find yourself in the desert - some other liquid with water-like viscosity, surface tension and diffraction characteristics can substitute the water, and a bowl can substitute the pond. Just make sure the surface is still and is filling most of the frame.
Please note that different angles would give you quite different effects. Another thing to try is a polarizer. It would give you great reflection control.
As usual: fresh pictures, moderate post-processing.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).
Let's get some still water! :-) :wink

From a WP standpoint it looks a bit muddy/bland. I would play with LAB/curves to bring a bit of a pop (also check DavidTO's pop tute in FAQ)

Whoops. I need to learn to read the rules before posting. My apologies-- this isn't a fresh shot and now that I've read the rules, I get what this is about and why.
The location is Waldo Lake, Oregon.
I'll get out and work on a fresh shot and see what I can come up with. That's kind of what this technique assignment seciton is all about, eh? :D

Thanks for the info!
One thing about Oregon is that there is a lot of water (or so I heard:-), and water creates such a beautiful photops.:thumb
Yeah, that's basically one of the 3 major rules: fresh (IOW, taken with this particular assignment in mind), theme only (I'm trying to make them very narrow) and no major PS-ing unless specified.
Looking forward to your valid entries! :wink

I can't decide my favorite, but will go with the most reflective, and list the second as an honorable mention- I am aware that my highlights are pushed on the log and rock, if I had it to do over again, I'd polarized more heavily, or cut exposure time. Sometimes, we get one try, well on that day anyway. :) These were both shot since Sunday, how's that for recent?

While not picturesque, they show the difference of the filter.
Thank for doing this comparison. Too bad the water was murky and didn't quite show the difference as it would with a clear one.
Another thing is that you may want to control the angle. Amount of refraction/reflection changes drastically depending on it.
On the way back. I shot these two, since they are ineligable, I will keep them small so as to cause only a small amount of offence :rofl. I'll remove them if they do offend

But unless you've told us so, I'd have a hard time figuring out this is water.
Once again: please make sure it's showing water, reflection comes second.
George, your watermark is way to distracting for a challenge or competition.
That's my take on it, not as a mod, just as a viewer. I keep a directory for challenges and stuff, and remove any obtrusive watermarks, just an idea-
even lower right corner is better than slapped across the middle!

On a critique side:
high noon is not a good shooting time despite what general population and camera ads may say about it;
when shooting towards the sun either use the hood or try to shade the lens opening with your hand or hat. This will get rid of the haze, which is kinda hard to get rid of in post-processing;
as it was said earlier, usage of CP (circular polarizer) is highly recommended for this type of shooting.HTH
Bring us some more! :wink

I found hard to show still water without reflections, but I think I did it.
The water in the 1.st photo is still. My belly was on the stone ground !
The 5.th is clearly a reflection with the water as required.

I hear ya...
I was in the same boat :-) 3 years ago.
Then I decided that it's time to learn something. Now, 3 years, 15+ books, unknown number of tutorials and articles and 3 PS versions later, I can't express how much it did enrich my capabilities as a photographer (well, a switch from P&S to DSLR helped, too:-).
Yes, PS has a *very* steep learning curve, but it's worth it. And thus far no other software comes close.

I started getting serious about Photoshop in December last year. I bought Margulis' LAB Color book and Katrin Eismann's Masking and Compositing book and read them both cover to cover. That, and the school of hard knocks of Last Photographer Standing have taken my photography to an entirely new level.

I am new to photoshop for photo editing, but being a web application developer for 8+ years I have used it in a some capacity for quite a while. My fav. in terms of instruction is "The Photoshop CS2 book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby - definately a good resource for the new or experienced. His explanation and technique on curves for color correction is excellent.

His explanation and technique on curves for color correction is excellent.
I hate to do this again, but reflection is not our primary subject. Still water is. :deal

Looks a bit flat, though, just a simple touch could help a lot.
What would you suggest to make it not so flat?

Here's one of the pool in my courtyard. I saw the way the clouds were at dusk and thought, "Wow, that lighting is purfect"..
It's fenced in, so I couldn't get to the edge like I wanted too. No tripod (can't find the darn mount for it.).. I braced the camera between the bars w/ my hand.. I counldn't zoom too much, couldn't seen anything thru the camera to align it.
Not the greatest, but I like the lighting. Got one decent one.

Howdy-
Well I just found this thread this week and have not been real happy with any of the stuff I have shot specifically for this thread. However I figure I will cheat a little, sorry Nikolai, and use a picture I actually took earlier this month trying to convey the comedically poor conditions at a hotel I was staying at. So I took this picture of the pool. No the pool was not winterized, and I am not sure that the liquid contained in it was actually water.:scratch

No, it does not count! :nono
Yeah, I know what you're talking about.. :wink
Three years ago I had to take a month long trip to the Mother Russia with the whole family. When we got back we had our own pool about the same color.

I ended up paying about $1,200 to had it emptied, cleaned and refilled.

Meditation
This is the "mote" - if you call it that - running around the outside of the Emperior's Palace. It won't offer much protection, but it will help set the stage for the tranquil setting inside the walls.

Sorry for submitting so many - but I like these! They are all from a trip to Kyoto
It may be hard to see the "still water" in this pcture, but the water is in front of the large background rock.

The Golden Palace in Kyoto. Not my favorite as the sky was grey and mid-day light. It would probably look better in Black and White, but you can't have a B&W "Golden" palace!

Probably more on topic than the others. Can you tell where the water line is? This is on the Hillsborough river. This is a reflection shot with the water line near the middle, but it is hard to tell!

Uh Oh - I guess I'm in trouble too! I'm skimming and not reading enough! Well, what is the definition of "fresh"? (where is Clinton when you need him ;-)

Fresh rule is simple: you can't provide a picture that you took before you knew about the particular assignment, even if the assignment was started last Xmas, you took the shot April 1st but became aware of the assignment only yesterday.
The reason for it is to make you go out and shoot, and be actively aware of the assignment while you're shooting. Otherwise we'll be buried under the tons of the archive shots each of us has many.

Did you use CP (circular polarizer)? If not, this is exactly the kind of shot where it can justify its cost :-):deal

I actually had a CP (Circular Polarizer) in my bag (albeit a cheap version of one), but alas I forgot to use it. Slipped my mind until you just mentioned it, lol! Thats why I am still a newbie. And another example of the great tips I am picking up here at Dgrin. But I won't forget to pull it out next time.

The shots were both taken with the CP on the camera, the difference in the saturation was huge, so for the exercise I equalised the images to show the difference in the pool rather than the grass.
Please ignore daughter's legs she thinks CP's and Graduated filters are really cool she says "magic"
