Hey you'll :wave
Today while shooting I was fortunate to run into a Bald Eagle twice.
The first time I had my 80-400VR lens on my camera. He made a dramatic entrance.

he rested awhile

The next time I saw him I had my 300mm and 1.4 TC on my camera.

He didn't stay long (I think he was tired of me)

and for the non-bird pic - the view from my back yard. This is in case anybody was wondering why I left NYC for Florida

Great shots. It looks like the 300mm w/ 1.4TC is quite a bit sharper than the 80-400VR.
I'm still undecided on a nice long lens, so any advice would be helpful.

Very nice eagle shots :clap :clap You've got to work on your treeside manner and make that eagle stick around until you're done with him :rofl Keeping a couple of week old ribs in your vest might do the trick :lol
Man, your house is really nice too. Looks like you've got the life of Riley :super
Don't let that New Yawker make you homesick. He's got a point about the food. Nowhere else can compete with NYC. But, you're living the good life and working on your tan while they're digging their cars out of the snow :lol3 Sounds like a good tradeoff to me :thumb

Hey Andy,
I can't find a really good knish or pastrami down here as for falafel, who cares. But the BBQ down here is fantastic. BTW when I went out shooting this morning I was wearing a T-shirt hows the weather in NYC? :rofl

The 300mm is sharper and has better contrast plus it focuses faster. The downside is the fixed focal length. I've missed shots because I was too close to the subject. The flexibility of the 80-400 can't be beat. I also find the 80-400 is better in low light because of the VR. If I shot from a tripod all the time I would always use the 300mm but I'm often not tied to a tripod when I shoot.
I'm currently debating if I should sell the 80-400 but I'm up in the air.

Excellent shots! I love how you capture him so clearly! You'd think he owns that dead tree...his favorite hangout!
See..harry...all the angst about lenses...that is the part that makes me crazy (well only a small part:huh ) Even if I had the cash right now to go for the DSLR...I would have a tough time trying to decide on lenses......
I would want one of everything:dunno

I guess you don't have to worry about bugs and leaves falling into it, and you can air condition it in the summer? LOL
The eagle wasn't bad either!

Great Eagle shots, Harry! And I love your pool. I am wearing a jacket right now, in the house, as the door is open for the dogs. Last night I was wearing the same jacket when I was shooting. It is an LL Bean, all around jacket, good wind break, fleece lining, but not heavy. I think I have worn it every day this winter. Hey, I did wear a short polo shirt yesterday, but put a long sleeved shirt over it. I had no idea the "south" could get as chilly as it does.
When do you post? I don't think I was up late last night, but I keep missing your posts.

Those eagles are a bit touchy but I'm getting better with them. They prefer their food fresh so I don't think the spare ribs would work but if Andy gets down here I might try that on him. :rofl
I'm pretty happy down here. Some lean pastrami would be nice but I'll get along. We all have to make sacrifices I'm a veteran I can take it. :D

Hey Trish,
He spends more time in that tree than he spends in the nest.
Thats the fun of ownong a DSLR. The terminal case of lens lust, the constant debate of this lens of that lens, the empty wallet, oh what fun it is. :D
I'm going to PMA later this month in Orlando but Linda won't let me take my charge cards. :cry She doesn't trust me around all that stuff. She is a very wise woman.

Hey Dee,
The bugs and leaves are pretty much blocked. I have had to skim out 3 frogs and one snake though. The frogs seem to love the pool.
The eagle ws passable. :)

Hey Ginger,
L.L. Bean, I used to order new winter togs from them every year. I wonder if they missed me this year? :)
Glad you enjoyed the eagle pics. i was surprised I got some useable shots because I get so excited when I see them I get forgetting to adjust my settings.
Right now I'm usually posting new stuff between 6-8 PM. Hopefully i'll be able to get on earlier once I catch up on my post work.
