View Full Version : Assignment #35: Chrome

Ye bikers, ye classic car lovers, ye kitchn knife gods - gather 'round and bring your cameras! We're shooting chrome!

Well, stainless steel, or any other shiny polished metallic surface would qualify, too.:deal

Your "chrome" object should be a primary subject of the frame. Classic car shows are definitely the easiest game in town, but if you look around, you can find plenty other shiny metallic stuff.

One of the caveats: try to avoid catching your own reflection. One way to do it is to find a vantage point where your own refelection coinsides with a heavily curved surface, thus making it virtually undetectable. And if push comes to shove - PS to the resque! :wink

Nice "sun star" or two is an extra credit. :D

As usual: fresh pictures, moderate post-processing.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).

Let's get some chrome! :-) :wink

I know the assignment doesn't say mono, but I think the shiny stuff looks better this way...

Kodak Moment.

(The shiny bit on the camera is probably nickel plate rather than chrome - so not that shiny really.)

Jaguar Bonnet (Hood) Mascot.

I would like to add this one. Always liked the chrome with the reflection of the purple flowers. My husbands Triumph Bonneville mixed with the feminine perspective of the flowers reflecting in the chrome.

Yes, it is a real bottle (currently full...) of Bacardi white rum. Maybe a bottle of Scotch would have been better.

Quite right - it is only water in the measure, otherwise I'd be wringing out the backing paper after the shoot!

Glad you like it.

Matthew

PS - Scotch version (the drink looks a bit pale, probably because of the strong side-lighting. Glenmorangie isn't very dark to start with, though - Lagavulin might be a better subject.) This image is also probably more suited to the 'Reflections' assignment than chrome!

It even had that little pointing-smiley-guy you like so much. You need to make up your mind, Rules Lawyer.

And since I'm on the subject, technically all that stuff around the outside of your browser (menu, address bar, back/forward buttons, etc) is called chrome. So maybe I'll just take a picture of that! :rofl

(just giving you a hard time Nikolai, I'll see if I can find some real chrome... :D)

For some reason that picture says a lot...

Nothing on you personally.. But it just seems to have it's place in a story line of some sorts. My initial impression was an immediate, WOW...

It seems to say something more than words.. I can't explain it...

Anyway..I took these a week ago, or so.. If you want to count them.. Of not, I can get some new stuff no problem.. :D .. But I'd have to wash the car first..

Oh, the alignment of the second pic was PURLEY coincidental! But My OCD side likes it a LOT! LOL...

However, unless I'm gravely mistaken, you've fallen into the basic chrome trap I warned everybody about in the lead post: don't get your own reflection. :deal
In your case both shots carry a lot of you, hands in #1 and jeans in #2. The trick to avoid it is to position yourself in a way where the curvature would hide you in a couple of pixels.

You're the skinny guy right at the chrome edge, with something like a monopod :-)

Yes. It's me and it is one leg of the tripod.
I use the tripod to rest my arms and to stand the camera while I shoot with the other.
I run the risk of not seeing the tripod and camera to "run away" :D, so I always have one eye on it.

It is not a very secure way to shoot. :cry
I don't recomend it, at all.

This picture was shot with the 70-200. Usually I take the camera and lens combo (can I use this word here ?) from the tripod, shoot and put it back.

I usually walk with the tripod on the shoulder, like in the army men do with a gun.

On this one you have violated two rules on engagement, though:
1) old picture (global rule #1: fresh pictures only)
2) your own reflection is fairly visible (this particular class rule requires you to hide yourself better)
