The sunrise was nothing spectacular this morning...in fact even the bird population was pretty low at the wetlands. I did bump into Harry...always nice to do....

Now you and i had this talk this morning and I thought we both agreed that the 717 isn't cut out for wildlife shots. Now you come here and post this shot that was better than any of my captures. I mean I'm carrying around my DSLR and a few grand in glass with me and your 717 gets this shot. Its embarrassing. I wish you would cut it out. Thank you.

How close were you to the heron? What is that kind of camera that is not suitable........I thought it was the photographer not the camera, that is what Andy (You know the man with The Camera and all the glass) says. In fact, that is what I used to say.

LOL..yes we did discuss that. But I also said I can get a decent shot if the bird is 2 ft away, not moving and have good light..remember?? LOL

I can bet your shot of the eagle didn't look like this...and on yours we will be able to see his nose hairs..

Thanks Ginger. Neither Harry or I look as good as a pretty heron so we try not to waste shots..LOL ( and if I posted one of him he might become vindictive and post one of me )

My current camera is a Sony 717. Great camera but not for wildlife in action or at a distance. I am in the process of convincing my husband I NEED a DSLR and some powerful glass...a process that will take me a little while..

These are great shots. After seeing that first one, I never would have guessed that it was a 717. Very impressive work and Yes he must have let you get pretty close. Did you have a telecon on?

Thank you..This one acted as if he was "stuffed" A plane was flying overhead and that kept him distracted while I tiptoed closer.:uhoh

Hi Tim,

The eagle shot was a crummy "prove a point" shot:deal I didn't have the tele on for the heron shot...I was pretty darn close to him and used zoom.

717 is great for many shots, but extremely frustrating to use for distance and action. I am planning on upgrading...just not decided as to what yet, but my 717 will be something I will hold onto.

I think it must be the southern climate or something. I can't seem to get within 75-80 yards of a GBH in Indiana and they are airborne and they are gone. And I've got dozens and dozens of pictures of their backsides to prove it! I think you must be right Steve. They're stuffed birds they're shooting down south! :D

It definately takes lots of practice to sneak up on them...one thing they DO NOT LIKE is if I approach holding the camera in shooting position. I very slowly approach..sometimes taking up to 10 minutes to get fairly close stopping after each step..I turn sideways lift the camera to my eye and then slowly turn back...and begin shooting. I have had luck doing this...let me know if this works for you!
