Using Reflectors...Best Way Not to Blind Models?

I like using my gold/silver zebra reflectors and panel. But many times, they are too bright and blind the model. How or what is the best way or method for using reflectors during a model shoot? I step back, but still they blind the model.

My suggestion is use a large white reflector rather than a smaller silver/gold one. I have a 60" photoflex 5 in 1, but in practice I find I only use the white surface.
