is it correct to say that when i upload a photo to smugmug, smugmug creates versions of that photo for display online and leaves the original untouched?

Except if you upload and aRGB file, or CMYK, or ProPhoto, we'll convert it to sRGB.

See my posts here in this thread. We do not sharpen your originals.

At print, if AUTO is chosen (recommended!) then we'll apply proper sharpening for great prints.

andy, the page you provided says nothing of sharpening... some perceived sharpening occurs with contrast adjustment but your white paper says nothing about "auto" color applying any sharpening (usm or otherwise). does it?

We do apply some gentle unsharp mask when printing in autocolor. We were getting some returns with notes like, "Your printers must be worn out or of poor quality. My prints from Walgreens are noticeably sharper."

We try to strike up a compromise between pros, who tend to like less sharpening, and consumers, who tend to judge the quality of prints via their sharpness. I'm not aware of any returns at the currrent level of sharpening.

Autocolor, btw, doesn't necessarily increase contrast. It brings up the shadows a little which perceptually lowers contrast on some images.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Baldy
