View Full Version : Assignment #34: Vanishing Point

Nikolai
May-03-2007, 11:59 PM
Honestly, what did you think when you saw the theme? :wink

Well, VP is not only the name of a very powerful filter in PS CS2/CS3, it's also a classic way to compose a picture (Renaissance painters were masters of that technique).

Wikipedia defines it like this:
"A vanishing point is a point in a perspective drawing to which parallel lines appear to converge. The number and placement of the vanishing points determines which perspective technique is being used.".

This week task is to shoot a picture with a clearly defined Vanishing Point(no more than 3 VPs, please).

If unsure - google for it, you'll find plenty of examples.

As usual: fresh pictures, moderate post-processing.
For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=41800).

Let's get some VPs! :-) :wink

Anyhow, here is another VP, it's a bit blurry since I decided to use a long exposure, plus my windshield is dirty =c)

Ohh! I wanna play! :ivar

I just took these two. It was difficult to control the narrow DOF. It was even more pronounced as I brought the camera closer to the wall.

My first one was off, so I reshot it. I'm going out side to try a couple more..

#1 is nice. Good use of WA:thumb

As I have already mentioned to Antonio, the VP shots usually benefit from deep DOF, not the shallow one. You need to be able to see the convergence going on and away...

You know, frankly - I like the "original" better.
I'd suggest to go wider and have only the wall in the frame. You may need to really close the aperture down, like f/20, so tripod may come handy. You really need to catch the convergence, so your nearest bricks should be huge and your furtherst bricks should diminish..

P&S? I see.. For some reason I have only noticed Rebel XTi in your sig and thought you're using DSLR. Yeah, I know... had the same problem myself when I was shooting Sony...
Oh well, bigger buildings, brighter sun and lower angle will still help you to get a good VP entry...:deal

#1. Sure, no worries. It's better when the other folks see whta's in and what's out.

#2. Well, the point of this exercise is to catch of an existing classic effect of vaninshing point, when a few imaginary (or real) lines converge to infinity at one or more points. It's obvious that any such case actually forms a triangle or at least a trapeze (i.e. a triangle with the least angle cut off) when projected on a 2D surface of the film/sensor/screen/paper, yet the idea is only to have it in a perspective, not just a real triangle/trapeze.
Clear as mud?:dunno

Um.... yeah, pretty much. :dunno It's a picture with parallel lines that appear to be converging. Granted they don't actually converge, but then infinity doesn't actually exist either. Still not getting the difference.

Rereading your response, it seems like maybe you're under the impression that the lines in the picture aren't actually parallel? They are, at least to the limits of the building trade. That's a long window. (Edit: And I do mean a rectangular window, not a trapezoidal one. Although if I found a trapezoidal window I'd probably take a picture of it.)

Seems that so far all the photos have 1VP, as Nikolai keeps pointing out. I was going to try for a 2+ VP photo, but I'm stumped as to how to pull it off. Perhaps a Y-intersection or similar setup? But I haven't found any that I could pull of without a fisheye lens.

Anybody have hints for achieving a 2+ VP photo for the fisheye impaired?

Yes, Y-intersection and a wide enough lens would give you 2 VPs. What's your widest now?

My one and only for now is an 18-55, with a 1.5x crop factor. Denver does have a lot of Y's, thanks to the central downtown street grid being twisted from the rest of the area's grid. Still, haven't found one I liked -- although admittedly I haven't made a serious effort at it.

So there's a lot of variations on that theme (hallways, railroad tracks, trails) but it seems like there should be more than that. Guess that'll give me something to noodle on tomorrow.

While I'm not a big fan of 18-55, it should still give you some WA at 18mm. Sure you'll get some less than the perfect quality, but hey, we're not exactly shooting centerfolds here (I wish:-)

Taken in England ..the partial grayscale thing was done using Picasa , in my ignorance I did not keep a copy of the original [ stupid me - I have a lot to learn ] .

$3: good idea with vertical VP :clap
#4: uhm, I don't think this really qualifies, road is too curvy, there is not enough visual guides to create VP effect, IMHO

Side note: until I checked the EXIF I thought you're shooting FF film on ##2,3.. Strong vingetting, oversaturated colors, noise...:wink

Thanks for the input - still new to this forum - wasn't aware of the 'fresh' qualifer, although #2 and 3 are fresh, #1 and 4 aren't.

yeah i'm shooting on a canon 30D - i set the contrast and saturation 2 notches above even for all shots - i like the effect.

sorry if a dumb question, but is FF film short for "Full Format" film?

thanks,

Yes, "FF" is "full frame", i.e. sensor exactly matching 35mm frame, and "film" is, err, film...:wink

Welcome to the Class!

I love your entries!
You got me fooled for a few seconds on the first one until I saw that second window. Since VP is supposed to be more prominent in this assignment, simple crop would help a lot.
#2 is a wall hanger, here and there!
#3 is a classic 1Vp, also very nicely done!

I'm glad you could join us!:thumb

Thank you for the entry!

In fact this is one of the rare cases when the darn wires (not sure if you noticed them while shooting, though:-) actually add to the picture, since they create 3D VP. It's also one of the few occasions when the dead center composition fits the bill just right.

Thanks, Frank, very nice VPs! :thumb
Just for the record: the last one, being a great image, is not a VP showcase since the latter usually requires a much geater length of a perspective coversion ...

Yes, I'm aware. I just thought I'd include the location where the first two were shot. I found it funny, that a street near the Holland tunnel could be that desolate. It looks like you stepped into the twilight zone when you look down that block. Fun times. Now, to get back to my assignments! LoL.

Very cool! :thumb
I wonder if it would look better in bw or sepia with some grain and vignetting added...Would prolly be totally 1920-ies look-n-feel

#2 and #3 are solid, #1 is a bit subtle...
